Brian wrote this for Freddie to express what Freddie was feeling while dying of AIDS (knowing he had just a few months left to live). It's a hard song to sing, and Brian thought Freddie couldn't do it (he was so weak he could barely stand), but Freddie managed to record it and sounded incredible.

Yes, Freddie was very ill at the time he recorded this song. He could barely stand and leaned on the studio console. Brian was worried that it was too hard to sing. Freddie took a swig of vodka and said “Don’t worry darling, I’ll f****** do it”. I’ve read that Freddie did it in one take!!

For this song, sadly, there is really only the original studio version/official video... Yes, I know it's been done live with Elton, Paul Rodgers and also Adam Lambert but none come close to that amazing vocal of Freddie's set to the original (high sound quality) backing track!

Too bad, the official Queen video of this is excellent. It does a great job of looking back at all of Freddie's great moments. Not sure a fan video (all due respect, this is pretty good) can do as good a job. I find I want to see how Queen wanted the song presented. This is an incredible song but so close to the end.

My husband came in and tried to comfort me but I told him I just wanted to be alone. After a short while this song started running through my mind. I listened and took the message to heart. I got up and went back to living. I told my husband Freddie had spoken to me. Like you said, he was so brave. What on earth do I have to complain about!! He is an inspiration for sure. @@deboraclark5791 "Especially knowing who Freddie was". This means a lot to me. I have never felt so close to any star personality in history as I have to Freddie Mercury. I'm not sure why this has happened to me but it has. From his young childhood in Zanzibar, his early separation from his family to obtain his education in India, his new life in England, up to his tragic, untimely death, his life was special. I think in a way we are able to know him better now than his contemporary fans could with our 24 hour access to interviews, documentaries, live performances and, of course, the music besides things like these reactions and being able to enteract with other fans. Freddie was a very special PERSON beside his great talent as a musician. Freddie the Great as Rad says. And of course the other band members were special as well.

Yes, that was what I was going to comment on: I don't mind when fans make "live" mash-up videos of songs that Freddie never was able to perform live. (It's better than not having anything "live" to look at.) BUT... the audio on this is WEIRD. It sounds like they obviously used audio footage from the live 1992 tribute concert and inserted Freddie's singing, but... Freddie's vocals DON'T sound as AMAZING as they do in the original. Not sure what they did there.

It is credited to Queen while Freddie was dying of AIDS. It was his last official album with Queen, and when it was released, very few people knew he had the disease. The lyrics are about the need to press on and make the most out of life while you can still enjoy it. When Brian presented the final demo to Freddie, he had doubts that he would be physically capable of singing the song's highly demanding vocal line, due to the extent of his illness at the time. To May's surprise, when the time came to record the vocals, Mercury consumed a measure of vodka and said "I'll fucking do it darling!" then proceeded to nail the vocal line in one take without problems. To this day, Brian May regards this vocal performance as one of Mercury's best. It is inevitably a comment on Mercury's worsening condition, and his attitude towards life - May noted his incredible courage in the Days of our Lives documentary. "He never moaned, he never said 'my life is s--t, this is terrible, I hate it,'" said May. "He had an incredible strength and peace."

Brian and Freddie were working on this together ,recorded in 90 for the Innuendo album 91
    (Brian express interview)
with freddie not being well Brian polished it up and did the demo
Brian explained they spent the afternoon together
they had the song 'the skeleton'as freddie would say!
the theme, basic map,I'm assuming that would be the melody
they had only finished the first verse solidly
Brian had all the material to finish the song
but he then added 'butterfly wings'
and did the additional mapping needed to complete the song ready for the band
I'm assuming there would be quite a few
for the demo,Brian said he told Freddie he was only able to manage it in Falsetto so it would be difficult even for him in full chest voice
Freddie give me a vodka and I'll fkg do it! and he did!
this is classed as their most difficult of their songs to sing
challenging for a healthy, good singer never mind if you're ill
it has the same high notes as who wants to live forever but this is more difficult as you need a great deal of breath control as it keeps climbing higher
    but ofcourse he nailed it!
(maybe there were a few curse words again!)
I have a great deal of respect for Freddie and the strength he's shown
    the lyrics explain him well
my make up may be slipping but my smile stays on...
we've found out a lot of times were difficult but no one at the concert would know he just kept going, kept smiling and put on a heck of a show!
this must have been difficult for him however brave he was
but you wouldn't know he just gives it all the same passion and energy as always!

HEY Hon... THANK YOU for another Queen Sunday; I look forward to these ALL week.
I know you're already seeing this comment a LOT, but: You NEED to see/hear the original.
I don't mind the "live" video mash-up, there are a lot of fan-made videos like that of songs that Freddie was never able to perform live.... BUT, the audio on this of Freddie's vocals is strange. I'm not sure what the video-maker did, but Freddie's vocals here are NOT NOT NOT as clear/amazing as in the original.
(And the video montage that was created in the official version, is really a LOVELY tribute to Freddie.)

    • @EmeraldWings90
      @EmeraldWings90 Год назад

I think I know what the video-maker did - they matched the tribute concert performance's pitch (to have the audience, I guess), and put Freddie's voice on top of it, BUT since the live was in a different key, they used some software to lower Freddie's to match!!! That's an atrocity, unfortunately, it's like autotuning him. I think it's a semitone lower than he actually sang it. And autotune ruins the sound, it takes the human feeling out of things because it's so mechanical.

I especially love Liza Minnelli ending the show with "We Are the Champions" being joined onstage by all the other performers that night. And then, the very end, Freddie himself in full royal regalia as Brian's guitar wails "God Save the Queen." A tearjerker, that ending, but so perfectly apropos. That Tribute is still the largest ever for a fallen rock star-- Legend, in Freddie's case. Please try some reactions to the Big Band/WW2 era in the USA. There are so many brilliant WW2 orchestras, dancers, and singers.

Glenn Miller Orchestra, Tex Beneke, The Modernaires, Marion Hutton, and The Nicholas Brothers (legendary dance team)!

I think the best way to listen to this first is with closed eyes (and the official audio!!!), because I've seen reactors get distracted by the official video's rapid changing of scenes. It's also made up of a lot of old footage, and some people don't realize, they think it's just a chaotic video, if they don't know the history. They get distracted by the visual and don't realize how amazing the song itself is - which is a tragedy. I think you are smarter than that, but you also have not seen a lot of the music videos which are used in it, so... This video is less distracting from that point of view, but the audio on it is NOT the original. It's a semitone lower (did they use autotune to lower Freddie's voice to match??? autotune ruins the sound), and apparently the video maker redid the synth and the drums. Which takes skill, but it means you weren't listening to Queen just now, not fully.

Must react to Official video. By the way, was not impressed with Elton John's rendition at the Freddie Tribute Concert (some clips are in this video).

Don't particularly like these fan made versions..Freddie's voice has been dampened down.. probably to make it look I he is singing on the stage .. it has taken away how powerful his voice is.... the official version is much better. And the picture of Queen where Freddie is in the red and white jacket has been photo shopped because Freddie never had the beard then.

Sorry, can’t even watch this. This vocal is all messed up. Not even close to the power of the original sound. Yes, it takes a lot of time to do this, but there was no reason to. The official video is done superbly. Such a shame, I was looking forward to this reaction.
