  • Fun fast lap with a passenger and lot's of traffic during Sunday August 30, 2015 Touristenfahrten. Check below for answers to FAQ's.
    At the end of the lap you can see a new and much more powerful 2016 Audi R8 V10 Plus which was driven by an Audi factory driver as a demo showcase for potential buyers. It would have been nice if he had let me through but that would be bad marketing I guess!
    FAQ 1: Why don't you shift manually?
    Funny enough, I get this question in the comments 9 out of 10.
    The car is manual mode as you can see clearly from the position of the gear stick to the left but with Porsche PDK's (except GT cars) when you go full throttle (kick-down) it upshifts by itself at the best moment when it's hits maximum redline. Downshifts I always have to do manually but because the paddle is behind the wheel it's difficult to see. If you watch closely you can see me early upshifting in some corners to enhance traction (at the first bump going into foxhole at 2:45" and 2nd time at 2:56")
    FAQ 2: How do you get the track to display on the PCM?
    You can only get this if you have the Sport Chrono option.
    You start the Sport Chrono lap timer at the beginning of the lap. Then when you arrive at the same point at the end of the lap you push stop. Your route is recorded via the PCM GPS and from this route you get the outline of the track. The PCM has no idea which track it is, you can just name this lap.
    You can then save and use this lap as a reference. This is important because it let's you load and compare this lap when you start a new run. Then you get the track layout (recorded route) on the display again and you can see the split time difference from the previous reference lap.
    Hope you enjoy.

    I was annoyed that the R8 didn't let you through on the corners, but that battle would have probably been close if the R8 was pushing harder. There was a lot of traffic in front of him, so I can see why he didn't let you through, but it was still a bit arrogant of a move. He might have thought he would have just passed you again on the straights. Awesome driving and thanks for the video.

    you know! the boxster and cayman are the biggest threat to the 911. but Porsche is keeping it low on power, with lesser technology and not AWD. that middle engine is superb for dealing with the laws of physics. plz share your thoughts concerning this matter. Thank you

    • @RingRennSport
      @RingRennSport  9 лет назад +1

      Hi Elie, for sure this is true.
      All the best sport cars have almost been middled engined. From F1 to Porsche. This because of the "moment of inertia" just like you said. You can see this very clearly when I change direction hard, the car follows incredibly quickly. When you compare this with rear- and front engined cars there is always some delay in weight transfer. I see this also when I am behind a faster GT3, my Boxster is always quicker through multiple bends just because the mass is so centralized it just flows through the corners more fluently.

    • @RingRennSport
      @RingRennSport  9 лет назад

      BUT the 911 has the advantage of greater traction because of the weight that sits more above the rear tires. This means you can push the throttle a little bit more abruptly when exiting bends. Also it's a little bit more challenging and therefor maybe more exciting to drive a 911 hard because of the rear weight you have to control. For what I've seen the Cayman GT4 will beat any current 911 around corners except maybe the GT3 RS.

      +/ /. "For what I've seen the Cayman GT4 will beat any current 911 around corners except maybe the GT3 RS." wowww man!!!! just imagine a rear axle steering fitted to a gt4!!!!!!!! i dont wanna mention AWD or MORE power. btw, do you expect porsche to abandon rear engines somewhere in the future? or they will still invest in power and technology to maintain the competence of the 911 and its rear engine legacy?

    Great video, allows us to hear the wonderful sound of the car!
    On some of the downshifts you were not downshifting manually. Thus you had the transmission in sport mode (stick to the left, but still in automatic) and one of the buttons on the center console pressed (either sport or sport plus) that allows the car to do auto downshifts.

    • @RingRennSport
      @RingRennSport  8 лет назад +2

      +Marcus Soori Hi, sorry but you are very mistaken about how the PDK works. When you put it to the left it is M for manual mode and only manual mode. Then you can shift with the paddles at the wheel or the stick. In that mode it never downshifts itself but it does upshifts automatically at the ideal point when you floor it and it hit's the redline. To the right you have from top to both Parking, Reverse, Neutral and Drive (full automatic unless you touch the paddles at the wheel). Sport or Sport Plus has nothing to do with auto downshifts in Manual gear mode. It just changes the ESP and TC program, exhaust sound, faster shifts and more engine cooling. This is how it works. When you leave the gear in D (to the right and full automatic) and push Sport/Sport Plus it will change to points of shifting. Greets.

    • @marcussoori
      @marcussoori 8 лет назад +1

      Here is a good explanation of how PDK works (I am a former 981 Cayman S owner), from a Porsche forum regular contributor:
      "PDK will automatically up and downshift even in Manual. The difference is that the shift point in the other modes is determined by throttle. Suddenly floor it in any of the Auto modes and it will downshift appropriate to your throttle and mode. Stay on throttle and upshift point will depend on how much throttle and which mode. Floor it in Manual and it will not upshift until redline. Forget you're in Manual and brake to a stop, it will still seamlessly downshift all the way to full stop neutral. Doing this in Sport it will downshift at higher revs, you will hear the throttle blips and feel engine braking. In Manual it just stays in each gear until revs drop very low, then downshifts so smooth and quiet you will have to look at the numbers on the dash to know it happened! So overall keeps you in the gear you select while preventing you from doing any harm."
      Loving your GTS videos, please post more soon! :)

    • @RingRennSport
      @RingRennSport  8 лет назад

      +Marcus Soori Hi, don't quite understand why the discussion because I clearly know the in and outs of my own cars. Your Cayman S should work just the same as my PDK in the GTS.
      From reading your last message maybe I have misunderstood you comment, you are talking about a kick-down downshift?
      What you have just send me is a different matter all together, it describes a kick-down method. All automatics will drop gears automatically when you are in higher gear and do a kick-down. And indeed downshift when you let the car go in very RPM and to a halt which clearly didn't happen during this lap.
      I do al the downshifts myself at the wheel because you have to in M mode. Except when you early upshift not to let the wheels spin. When you then stay in let's say 6th and floor it it will indeed jump to the ideal gear again which is normal and the faster way instead of going to that gear manually one by one.
      This happens coming down into foxhole after the 2nd bump.
      Hope that answers your question.

    • @marcussoori
      @marcussoori 8 лет назад

      +/ /. The part of the quote I provided to you of greatest importance states that even in manual mode, when sport/sport plus is engaged, downshifts on braking will happen automatically, and not just for anti-stall purposes, also at higher rpms. That means the car can sense you are driving in an aggressive manner and will optimize braking downshifts if it feels it is smarter than you. If you reread the quote I provided, the sentences I have summarized are stated there.
      Have a great weekend!

    • @marcussoori
      @marcussoori 8 лет назад

      +Marcus Soori When I stated "automatically" in my reply above, I mean only in the situations in which the car decides the driver is attempting to downshift too late for optimal performance.

      She jumped in quickly and I only had 1 helmet and in that case it's always better that the driver has one because if the worst happens and only the passenger has a helmet then in a crash he/she will knock the driver unconscious with the helmet. In this case at least you remain in control if something happens, hopefully.

    I guess the sport exhaust is off. why? and does it gain more power when on?

    • @RingRennSport
      @RingRennSport  9 лет назад

      No it's on. For me they could as well have skipped this button because I always leave it on. I have read that there is a small performance gain when the valves are kept open so the air is flowing more freely but you do not feel it at all.
      The sound of the exhaust is silenced a lot on this video because the cooling fans were blowing full power because I always race with the AC off so to not have any power disadvantage.
      But thrust me the 981 GTS exhaust is VERY loud and produces a great sound. Louder that a GT3! I also compared it side by side with a GT4 and the GT4 is a little louder but mostly deeper. The GTS has a much sharper pitch. More "V10" like when pushing hard.

    • @RingRennSport
      @RingRennSport  9 лет назад +2

      Hi, because all Porsche PDK's shift up by itself when you reach redline during kick-down. It is also the case with Audi S-Tronic. I think only the GT3 & RS don't. I really don't mind, it means you can focus on a lot of other things. I put it in manual so I can downshift myself or do an early upshift if I need to. Greets.

    • @shmee150fan
      @shmee150fan 9 лет назад +1

      Elie Nehme it doesn't matter if you use full throttle. if the car senses that you can accelerate faster in a lower gear, it will automatically change down to a lower gear (kick down).

    • @theresonly1truth138
      @theresonly1truth138 9 лет назад +1

      +shmee150fan yes. but what is meant here by kick down is using the throttle fully. we are arguing here about the car shifting up not down under full throttle. my question was if pushing the end of the throttle's kick down botton differs than not pushing it

    I have a question: i read the description but i would like to know if there is some setting on the PDK or sport mode, i don't know, that allow you to have a "full manual" shift in both down and upshifts.. i mean: can you tell at the car "stop upshifting! I want to do the entire Nordschleife in first gear!!" :D

    • @RingRennSport
      @RingRennSport  8 лет назад +1

      +ratt14thebests Hi, in manual control the downshifts are always up to you. Only way to not have the car upshift by itself in M is too not floor the gas pedal (kick-down) But then even I think it still upshifts when reaching the limiter but I forgot. As you can understand when I drive hard enough to get in the neighborhood of the redline, my foot is on the ground anyway so it always shifted up by itself. But if you like to run the NS in 1st gear, you can. Just hold the pedal just before redline ;)

    • @ratt14thebests
      @ratt14thebests 8 лет назад +1

      Thank you for the answer! I always thought that in the PDK models (both cayman and 911 series) you could use it like a normal sequential gearbox. For example i know that in the ferraris you can set the gearbox in order to let it upshift autonomously but you can also set it like a normal manual gearbox so you decide if and when upshift even in full throttle. I'm a very big porsche supporter but i think that it's a pity that they don't offer a way to reach the redline whenever you want and as long as you want.. (obviously keeping full throttle, i mean).. at any rate you driving is very good and it's a pleasure watching your videos!

    Horrible interior. Never seen a GTS with that interior. Brutal. I spent some time driving a BoxsterGTS on track and it was a blast. It was a shorter track so didn't get up to those speeds. I'd say your driving is soso - you are not even shifting your own gears. Why is your passenger not wearing a helmet?

    • @RingRennSport
      @RingRennSport  9 лет назад

      +MrFunk Hi, I had to have that interior 1 time in my life. Makes the car feel a lot more luxurious. However I will be pleased when my GT4 arrives shortly so I can start wearing jeans again! :)
      Concerning my driving, I take it you have driven the Nordschleife a lot have you? ;)
      And for the gears, go drive a Porsche with PDK, put in in manual mode, mash the throttle and see what happens, the PDK will always upshift itself when it comes to the redline, easy. It doesn't downshift itself however in manual mode.
      It's difficult to see because the steering wheel paddles are so small but if you watch closely you can see me downshifting all the time, plus early upshifting to not upset the car in some corners.
      Passenger wasn't wearing a helmet because 1) she jumped in quickly at the gate 2) only had 1 helmet 3) If you crash it's always better that the driver has a helmet on instead of only the passenger because the helmet will knock the driver unconscious and with all the consequences that will have of trying to avoid a second impact, etc...
      Greets.

    Wow, was für geile Beine, Fuesse und Zehen der Beifahrerin, die haben mich ehrlich mehr interessiert als Deine Fahrt... LOL... Und. Warum trägt eigentlich die Beifahrerin keine Helm - verantwortungslos so was... auch wenn der gelbe SPACO Audi so langsam fuhr....
