Jean Sibelius
Symphony No 6 in D minor, Op 104
1 Allegro molto moderato
2 Allegretto moderato
3 Poco vivace
4 Allegro molto
Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra
Esa-Pekka Salonen, conductor
The opening of this symphony is, to me, one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.
I agree. The opening just gets hold of me. Hard to resist it.
I know it was written by a man here on Earth, but it seems to cascade down from heaven.
One hundred years after Beethoven composed his Symphony No. 6 in F Major 'Pastorale', Sibelius composed his own Symphony No. 6 in D Minor of which he said it "always reminds me of the scent of the first snow." Delightful performance, sound and camera work.
An excellent pastoral symphony!!! Excellent performance of orchestra and conductor!!!BRAVO!!!
6:56 - The Sibelius intro for anyone looking for it!
me lol
Me three
This Sibelius' 6th Symphony by Maestro Salonen and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra is by far the most beautiful and convincing performance among those by all other orchestras. Perfect in every aspect! I am extremely grateful to have Maestro Salonen in our time ❤
E-P Salonen is an excellent conductor. What he has that no other conductor that I have ever seen is the fact that he is so emotionally connected to the music. He is very serious about his presentation. He is extremely knowledgeable about the pieces he chooses and conducts for his programs. One does NOT go merely to listen to the music -- one goes to watch Salonen conduct. He is mesmerizing. One other thing about him is that all this talent and knowledge is packaged in a man who is devastatingly handsome.
Beautiful symphony,I felt İ'm in a forest, it is so pastoral! Unbelievably talented conductor!
One of my favourite symphonies and my favourite conductor of Sibelius,
The most beautiful Sibelius Symphony, and for me one of the most beautiful symphonies ever composed. "It always reminds me of the scent of the first snow." ~Charles Buxton

It's hardly ever played, he started out to make it gloomy and the explosive and it became bucolic and softer..It premiered on Feb. 19th today,1920
The scent of the first snow line is Sibelius’s own quote.
This is the lowest rated of Sibelius symphonies. I find this regrettable. So many nice themes in this, and what a joy to listen to! I associate to a working day, it begins with the morning light in the first movement and people go out to their working day. During this day many things happen, both joyful and more serious. It is as near a pastoral Sibelius comes! And the most joyful symphonie he wrote.
Edit: i forgot, it was the eighth that he burnt
Didn’t Sibelius burn his seventh symphony in his green fireplace becuz he “had to make the next symphony better than the last” and it couldn’t, in his opinion, compete with this one, the sixth?
@@Liz.CottageCore His seventh, Fantasia sinfonica, as it first was called, was not burned. It was his eight that never was completed, and as history tells us, finally ended up in a perhaps green fireplace.
Fantastic Maestro Salomen! Very passionate interpretation; perfect tempo... right up there with Karajan, Jarvi, & Sir Colin Davis. Sibelius' symphonies 1, 2, 4, & 6 are musical treasures!! Some of the greatest symphonies of the 20th century.
Salonen! Bravo
My Clarinet teacher, TSO principal for 3 decades agrees! True marvels indeed!
Great advice. Thank you. I'll take a listen!
Why isnt the 5th and 7th musical treasures?
@@misterb5073 7th is a masterpiece true
As pure, cold water. An enigma. An inspiration. Unique.
A quote from Sibelius himself: Other composers give you pink Champagne. I give you clear cold water.
The journey of appreciating this symphony began with that enchanting string ostinato at 3:50. It stopped me in my tracks as I was cleaning when I realized how it had kept on going 😂
9:00 allegretto moderato
14:50 poco vivace
18:47 allegro molto
thx
Maestro

Love this orchestra, every time it comes on I'm so pleased :)
A beautiful rendering of this score
This conductor is impressive and the interpretation is too! I like Sibelius ...
many thanks. the first Sibelius piece I was fond of and still remains my favorite. this early in his career you can see Salonen had a phenomenal career ahead of him which he delivered on.
I've been listening to Sibelius renditions from Maestro Salonen, and I have to say that they convince me, and not only because he is a Finn playing Finnish music. As another users point out, they are at same level of Karajan or (Neeme and Paavo) Jarvi :)
Marvellous - the shining North..
Finland runs freely through Jean Sibelius. He understands! 🤍🤍💙💙
stunning
excellent
Extraordinaria interpretación.
6:54
6:59
5:25-6:04 Is so beautiful.
Comfort and spiritual uplift surge up within me
What a versatile musician Sibelius was!
When was this recorded? Does anyone know??
I cannot find the date, but Salonen became the Chief Conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra (one of highest standard) in 1985 - and he looks just as young as I heard/saw him Finland in the beginning of the 1980's. He is a genius!
Maravilloso.
O. M. G. This symphony
makes me feel happy.
I love 💕💕 this orchestra
and performance!!!!
Really? This is the expressions of the wanted purity of the soul.
All of Shibelius embodies the spiritual aesthetics and patriotism
27:04 is an absolute treasure.
I know right! There was one day a couple of weeks ago where it was stuck in my head but I couldn't remember where it was from. A few hours later it finally hit me and boy that was cathartic
Why oh why didn't more classical composers use Dorian mode? It adds such an evocative beauty that you can't get in the regular minor mode.
TRUE!!!
super!!
I'm going to say it: sometimes Sibelius makes Mahler sound like a windbag. There's all the beauty and cruelty of nature here.
lindo lindo lindo !!!!
gut
If you just read the titles of the movements, it would very unlikely occur to you that this is a pastoral type of work.
today [Feb.19]is the day of the premier of the Symphony in Helsinki in 1920 the sixth isn't played much
Au contraire. I've noticed over the last 4 decades it has superceded the 3rd & 4th as concert inclusion.
I heard it twice in one season recently.
7:00 lol
From "the wanted purity of the soul" to "superb" to "excellent".
Just enjoy classical music, especially the composers, musicians, sound-technici, etcetera, who you like most.
But please, can we stop making RELIGION, please
Pura delicia
