- Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak clashed over their strategies to tackle inflation during the Conservative Party leadership debate on Channel 4 on Friday (15 July).
While Ms Truss blamed the Bank of England, Mr Sunak told her: "Borrowing your way out of inflation isn’t a plan, it’s a fairytale.”
The candidates' performance in the debate on Friday could influence the way Conservative MPs vote in the next leadership ballot on Monday (18 July).

Sadly Rishi has it correct, pumping more money into an economy with inflation at 10% will only line the pockets of corporations.
More money to spend + limited goods = price rises
And a large amount of the inflation is caused by supply problems, and subsiding demand in a supply problem will cause inflation to rise even higher.

That's why I said before the taxes decrease or increase must be targeted like Singapore or S Korea did it and made sure the end consumer would spend it to help grease the hurting economy. S Korea recently reduced taxes for landlords that must pass that on to renters! Rishi had no experience in building up a synchronized set of policies. Talk is rather cheap
This has aged really well. I see a lot of Truss supporters in the comments agreeing with her without properly understanding what she was actually saying on the economy.
Brits can't stop winning. The public voted themselves out of the EU and they would rather believe in fairytales than Sunak who actually worked for the Goldman Sachs. The public is dumb and they will continue to choose dumb leaders.
Well it's only a one minute clip. Going by what she said, they don't disagree on anything. Even her body language is in agreement with him at first. In terms of econ theory, they're both neolibs that beleive in monetarism, so I'm not sure if they have any core differences. Then again I'm not sure if Truss had any core beliefs in anything to begin with.

True but then Liz had a good point at the end. What Rishi says means increase in tax costs to balance things out so are we really reducing costs? I think there's a bigger picture to look at.

@@immers2410 That may be the case but sadly the situation as it stands doesn't have an easy solution and I'm not sure how Rishi or any politician can stand there and belittle a co candidate by pretending to have all the answers. I'm sure Liz has enough experience in economics, trade and finance to know full well what Rishi's solution means... Most likely a rise in taxes. I think Liz also has a good track record morally. I don't know enough about Rishi on either front.

Monetary Policy in the U.K. is set by the Monetary Policy Committee, which is independent of the government. Liz doesn’t know this? This is a basic point and any upcoming PM candidate should know this
They can still put pressure on them. If the prime minister comes out and says the rates are to low and the MPC aren’t doing their job gathering public support, then you bet the MPC start thinking about raising the base rate. The MPC are supposed to target 2% or thereabouts. There is little evidence of them doing so during the current economic crisis.

@@cnw3903 No. Lockdowns were a failure and I could have told you that with confidence by May 2020. They did not save lives. In fact, the "cure" was worse than virus; economic destabilisation, backlogs of treatments, increased mental illness, drug abuse, division and a general malaise in the country.
He is at fault for much of this as he had the authority to effect change. Ordinarily, avoidable failure is met with a P45 and disgrace, but in politics, you fail upwards.

We are already in the big crash, Inflation is a catastrophe. This CPI report is a colossal failure. To bring the housing market to a halt, the FED will have to pull all the stops. The unfortunate issue is that other markets are being decimated. If you want to stay green, you have to rely on a lot of diversification. Currently up 14% and being careful. Still a better deal than leaving it in a savings or checking account yielding 0-1 percent interest.
People believe their currency has the
worth it does because they have no other option. Even in a hyperinflationary environment, individuals must continue to use their hyperinflationary currency since they likely have minimal access to other currencies or gold/silver coins.
I think I could really use more guidance to navigate the market, it is completely overwhelming, I've liquidated most of my assets and I could really use some advice on what best to invest into.
@@emmacreame4889 If you are not conversant with the markets, your best bet is to get you some kind of advise or assistance from a consultant/investing coach. It might sound basic or generic, but getting in touch with a consultant was how I was able to stay afloat the market and raise my portfolio to about 57% these past months. For me, its the most ideal way to jump into the market these days...

She has since provide entry and exit points on the securities I focus on. You can look her up online if you care supervision. I basically follow her trade pattern and haven’t regretted doing so.

@Hi UK economy crisis did not happen in isolation. Almost every country in the world is affected by the C-19 pandemic which lasted for 2 years. More so UK because our economy is largely service-base and not commodity-base. Low revenue from an affected global service market could have easily contributed to inflation and increase interest rates. Even a small change in the interest rates could give big impact to public spending and made everyone even poorer. Therefore, the inflation was avoided by imposing tax rise (a TEMPORARY measure). Just like the tax rise, sometimes, one needs to take a short-course of high dos antibiotics to cure a severe infection for a full fledge recovery. We are on the road to economy recovery.

I'm in no doubt you or someone you know will have benefited from furlough. Rishi took the chancellors job in the worst period in British history bar the world wars, Brexit, Covid, Ukraine and the Supply Chain crisis. He's not exactly going to be giving handouts whilst he tries to steer us away from recession.

Where is the rest of the debate?
Recession becomes a problem if your investment portfolio is badly damaged at the same time you are withdrawing funds to fund your life now or in retirement. Also problematic if it harms our kids or grandkids. not everything is as bad for everyone. some are smart, some are dumb and yea some are just unlucky. my dad left me an inheritance of around $1.5m. real estate and some other investments in the stock market have kept the money flowing , amassing around $120k every damn quarter, aside from my job as an engineer. not to be brash as i know everyone has their own different situations in life but it's also worth noting that a lot of people have poor money management skills and strategies

There is truth to that statement, we complain about 40 hour work weeks when other work 7 days a week 12 hours a day and we wonder why they are wealthy.
@@asl7235 if you think people working 7 days* a week, 12 hours a day by choice is the way forward then you're part of the problem. Yes, hard work is admirable and I'm sure people who have worked those hours have become rich, but it's not always that simple. It's about opportunities. People are obsessed with this 'grind' mindset that if just put in hours and days of work you can make it when that's just not the case. Tell that to the cleaners and the low skilled workers who work the hours you've mentioned and yet are still in poverty or working class.

@@GlenWRU you get what you put in, for example my mother raised 2 boys alone, she worked 3 jobs and never claimed handouts, bought her first house with no help, as for opportunities look at any job website and you will see thousands of vacancies but maybe they are not what you want to do. In fiscal policy, tax rise could reduce spending and inflationary pressures; a method to control inflation. Tax cut is just a temporary solution which could drown an economy into inflation. On that premises, what Rishi Sunak did was to control the inflation, and avoided the rise in the INTEREST rate. Even a small change in interest rates can bring BIG impact to public's spending. Therefore, what Rishi did was a strategical wise move.
If Liz Truss wins, not just UK, the entire hemisphere is screwed.

What's caused inflation is that there is higher demand chasing fewer supply of goods. The are two ways to get inflation down: (1) reduce demand; (2) Increase supply. If tax cuts lead to increase in demands, inflation will further increase, not decrease.

Liz states correctly that there is something wrong with our monetary policy (it's our monetary system too), but Rishi dishonestly snaps back "we can't get out of this with borrowing" - she didn't mention borrowing. I don't trust the current two front runners at all. It's between Kemi and Liz, and my vote is for Kemi. If Thomas Sowell is a hero to her, that's a pretty great start.

Truss will borrow to pay for tax cuts. The only other solution would be to cut public services, military spending and lay off tens of thousands of public sector workers. Delaying interest payments on the current deficit will only cause further fiscal pain years down the line. Inflation won't last too long hopefully. We all need to spend less and cut back to help balance the economy. Apart from the multimillionaire bankers who seem to be ever present amongst Tory ranks, and their billionaire backers and media moguls, although none of the latter live in the UK.

If they were and had to function as a business, they would not be purchasing bonds - end then what would the government do? (Rhetorical). I would also allow the markets o set interest rates so we'd have a genuine price of money. Even with those two steps, it would leave the government little choice but to shrink itself.

Being an economics student, there is only one way to tackle debt and inflation. That is raising taxes. This is the only right way. Anyone that says otherwise or wants to reduce taxes doesn’t have the best interest of this country!

In a cost of living crisis what sense does it make to impose taxes making people worse off, to tackle inflation which is making people worse off. If you think taxes would reduce inflation, then you would agree that reducing public spending would reduce inflation. This is what many conservatives advocate.

@@spacebarbus Brexit has realigned British politics. Many remain voting tories have moved to Lib Dems (especially in London) but many historic labour voters who voted leave have moved the other way…..honestly no idea who would win at next election imo
