"Kintsugi (金継ぎ, "golden joinery"), also known as kinsukuroi (金繕い, "golden repair"), is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum, a method similar to the maki-e technique. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise." -Wikipedia. Looks great!
Just bought a bunch of these from my local timber store they only charge £5.00 ($3.75) for 10 for medium average size ones and they are really interesting to turn. This video just gave me some great ideas so thank you! I have to agree, DON"T try gluing them to a waste block or a jam chuck as these things are solid and really hard as well as being really unbalanced so they do have a tendency to come away. Follow the advice at the start of the video and start between two centres and create a small tenon to mount into a proper chuck to avoid them bouncing around your workshop or off your head!
On the part at end if they are thin enough, you can light them up from the inside … so if you're really lucky you can turn one into a mini-lampshade as well as vase or bowl?
Hi Tim, This turning is amazing!Your videos are always so interesting and informative! I wish Thompson Tools and Robust Lathes gave out free samples! LOL Thanks for the video! Tom
I want someone to make me ivory tea cups that are as beautiful as these! I can try to find ways to send the metroxylon sagu fruit for you. Its Bigger with big hollow center. N round. Not sure if its good for this kind of carving. But its nice see if it’s possible so i can ask for a few cups? Eheheh!
Why do that ?? Theyre soft right when they fall from the tree and harden over time while being on the forest floor so maybe just find ones that have recently fallen if u live in an area where trees w tagua nuts are
realy beautyful, but this nut lets me wonder if someone did try to turn a coconut. i mean, even if its not realy round, you propably get e realy nice "skeletonized" bowl.
Talk about having steady hands! The black CA made this turn. AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL! SAFE TURNING, John
What an inspiration you are to me, thank you

Looks great!
Absolutely beautiful with the black star bond. Thanks Tim and Brian.
Interesting material! The black glued cracks give it a marble effect look!
that tagua nut with the dark glue stuff reminds me of lichtenberg fractal burning. Looks great!

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the video!
Tom
thanks Tim awesome stuff. I was wondering I notice they fade to a yellow. Is there anything you can coat them in to keep them shinning white?
Tim thanks for the great video, very neat turning.
Absolutely wonderful 💖
I would love to see a tagua nut and the Carter sphere jig, I bet that would made a neat piece.
That was one of your best Tim! Looked like a Japanese antique. I want to try that black glue on cracks to turn a flaw into a design.
Excellent!
I like that diamond wheel you used for sharpening
The meat of the Tagua nut reminds me of Brazil nuts. Is it that soft as well? It feels like it's a little harder.
The tagua nut is harder than a woodpeckers lips. Its hard to carve with a knife , almost like ivory
@@brandysigmon9066 I see! Thank you! :)
Great work! The nuts are edible when they first hit the ground and harden over time.
great work.. thank you...
Beautiful form s Tim thanks for sharing
I can't wait to try this out
Thanks Tim! Love your videos. Inspiring stuff!
Wow...love it!
As my old General once said "NUTS". Brilliant turning.
near the end when you were worried about voids, is the sanding relatively safe from the "explosion" problem?
Very cool.
thanks tim!
Amazing.
You are one goofy guy, and you're awesome!
Got to have some of those, you say Ebay? Is that the only place that you know of. Those are great!!
That is so cool 😎
Those would make amazing salt and pepper shakers
That's freakin' awesome. Never heard of them and will probably not be able to get them here in Aus, unfortunately.
Nise job. 🙃

Can we make them soft by boiling ?

Good advice to never crush your nut...
It's also called vegetable ivory.

I bought a dozen of these things thinking I could hand carve them. Hell no! Lol these nuts are hard as a rock, a Dremel is necessary.
2:01 forest grump reference
I JUST SAW SOME JEWELRY MADE WITH THESE AND IT HAD A LOT OF BLACK RUNNING THROUGH THE ENTIRE PIECE KIND OF LIKE SPALTING
Wow, the black glue makes it look like marble.
For some reason I really want to use "Thompson Lathe Tools". Anyone else feel that way?
definitely , they look nice and top quality
I bet the red part of it was like the heart of the nut
5:28
I really thought these were normal sized from the thumb nail.
Though i was the only one that thought these were 😎
Try to count how many times Tim says "nut" through the duration of the video
2 to 6$ a piece ?! I pay 10$ a kilo...
First
It's really no substitute to ivory. Horrible material. unstable, not durable.
Nothing beats real ivory.
Omg. I was just looking at those in the store Wednesday!
