This was so clear and informative. We're expecting a baby end of June and we're trying to figure out our options. I just made my husband sit and watch it too. We are both really grateful for all the help, thanks!
Thank you for explaining everything! I have been doing research on cloth diapers and there wasn’t much info on skin contact, I’m glad I watched your video. Thank you 😊
My son has started leaking through his nighttime diapers and I was looking on amazon and so lost on which inserts to buy, I was planning on going with the charcoal bamboo so thank you for this review! Now I will just suck it up and buy some of the thirsties hemp!
This was so helpful! It was nice that you laid all the broad types of inserts out for beginners like me! I kept finding videos about people's top inserts, etc. but this was exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks for this I’m def investing into some hemp inserts and flour sack towels!!! The flour sack towels are so cheap compared to flats and there basically the same.
Thanks for this vid! My baby is 6 months and we've recently run into a really annoying leak problem. We have pocket diapers and we use microfiber (doubled up) and then microfiber and charcoal bamboo overnight. I'm going to get my hands on some bamboo and hemp inserts. Thanks again!
So one question I have, if hemp and bamboo are slow to absorb and you want something more absorbent on top, but microfiber isn’t supposed to touch the skin - what are you supposed to use on top? Thanks for the info!
Hi Liz! You said not to put microfiber against baby's skin, but that it works well as the layer that goes on top of bamboo/hemp? Is this only if it would be going into a pocket diaper? Thanks!!
I thought hemp sucked and was about to put a bunch of diapers in storage due to the constant leaking but I’ll try putting a micro on top and see if that helps, thank you!
This is SO helpful. We're expecting our first in December, so I'm trying to finish up our registry. I made a chart from the info you've given. Thank you!!!
So I'm just starting out and I got the charcoal bamboo inserts and I'm thinking about getting the hemp inserts as well since they are so worth. How would you recommend using them both should I put the charcoal bamboo inserts inside of the pocket and the hemp on top or put both hemp and charcoal bamboo inside the pocket?
Thank you ! Life saver! . It took me days to finally understand. This video clarified what i needed to hear. I was initially planning to buy only hemp inserts but then i realized it was bad by itself. I thought inserts should be on its own and its good. I am planning to buy pocket type of cloth diaper for my baby. I was scared AF on the microfiber i went crazy cause i knew it should not touch the baby's bum. But since u clarified that pocket diaper is safer to use i'll go with that.
Would a bamboo cotton insert be faster absorbing than a bamboo insert? Can I use a bamboo cotton or hemp cotton insert by itself? Thanks for the video!
Liz what about gauze? i come from Ukraine and my parents swear by it, i grew up using exclusively those actually but I haven't seen them being used in US. I wonder how absorbent inserts from cause can get comparing to others.
Hi Liz, I am due in a month and I plan on starting with disposable (first baby), and move onto cloth diapers when I feel more comfortable! I was planning on buying the pocket ones, so the insert would not touch the baby skin directly. Would you say that I need to invest into some bamboo/hemp inserts as lower layer and microfiber as top layer for better absorbancy? Thanks!!!
My LO is 8mo and I'm starting to have to up my creativity with fabrics/layering. Wondering if you noticed any difference in the brand of inserts? In my experience the Alva microfiber is awful - it doesn't saturate well (vs rumparooz microfiber, which I've had great success with using at nightime). We follow a good wash and strip routine, but I think something needs to change. Considering getting hemp for overnight use and switching our rumparooz microfiber to daytime use.
Thanks for sharing the knowledge! In the future would be handy to get a closer look how certain insert look like to be able to tell apart for the total beginners like myself;)
I find the standard/textbook about inserts absorbency levels and compression to be off in my real life use. I know the cloth diaper podcast talks about this too. I find cotton and hemp to be opposite of what is usually talked about. I love hemp alone, it absorbs faster for us than cotton but it depends on the brand and specific material. I love hemp fleece and hate hate hate most cotton, it just floods for us. Bamboo absorbs really fast for us just don't like the flopiness.
I’m going back and forth on getting more inserts or getting more prefolds or a mix of both. Would you recommend more prefolds to use as a trifold in cover or duo wrap? Or inserts? I’m new to this and I’m pretty overwhelmed! Or should I just stick with flower sack towels?
I use a full FST and layer with micro/hemp everyday! you could cut it in half i suppose. But I can usually get a full FST and a small microfiber or hemp on my 2 month old without any issue
I have a question for you! I want to use diaper covers; If I used a FST prefold with a hemp insert for overnight, would it be wet against the baby's skin? Would I need to add some kind of wicking liner? Thanks!
Thanks for the information! Where do you get your 5 layer bamboo inserts from? I'm looking on amazon and it is a little overwhelming by how many different kinds there are, and some aren't "pure" bamboo but have layers of microfiber in there too. Do you have a link to buy the bamboo ones you use? All the ones I find are bamboo outside and microfiber inside.. I'm getting super confused! Can you tell me which are the combinations you use in each case? Thanks for the help!!
Ugh I don't have a link to them unfortunately! I bought them in a facebook group, and they were included with some alva diapers I got. I think the website the Fluffy Penguin sometimes has the plain bamboo ones, I'd check there! Sorry! I use the bamboo, hemp and a flour sack towel all together for night time. And during the day I usually combine a Flour sack towel with a microfiber :)
I'm a FTM. I bought a few diapers of various brands to try out on my baby. I am wondering what is the best insert or insert combo for a newborn? Would you use MF, FST, MF +FST, FST + HEMP, MF + HEMP? I don't want to make his diaper too bulky. Also, when doing the ALVA baby hack, do you do the hack to shorten the diaper and then stuff it with the insert? Do you fold the insert (like the MF) to make it shorter since you are shortening the diaper? Thanks for your help :)

Oh wow what did you not like about them??
I didnt find them very absorbent. I do have some bamboo ones that are just bamboo and i like those!
Okay I can't trust anything that you say who the hell gets 12 hours of sleep with a baby🤣😂 and even if you have name brand disposable diapers laying in 12 hours of anything isn't safe🤦🏽♀️
why go naturalike oth diapers just to put highly synthetic petro chemicles on your child (microfiber and fleece). I would NEVER do that.
Then don’t do it lol
