Naniwa Aotoshi (Green brick of joy) first impressions

    For the last several months I did an experiment where I maintained my wife's Shun kitchen knives with nothing but an Imanishi Latte (400 grit) and a Naniwa Aotoshi Green Brick. The Latte was only used when I had to do edge repair where the knives were not handled properly :-).
    The Aotoshi did a fine job. I did prep it with an Atomo 140 at the start of the experiment, but after that just cleaned the stone with a rust eraser.

      Yea the aotoshi is a great stone. It requires a little bit of skill being so soft as i is, but it leaves a great finish. That and the fact that it is HUGE :) The Atoma is great as well, but i mostly use mine for fixing stones. I just recieved a New omurato (naniwa) 150 grit stone, that im going to put to use in a few days time. so looking forward to that :)

    I'm fairly certain the Aotoshi 2K is a splash and go, not a soaking stone. I use it that way in any case, and it is outstanding once you've worked through what seems to be a bit of a glaze on the initial surface (initially seemed to load up quite easily). I truly appreciate how prolific your channel is and the number of stones you share with viewers. Terrific channel!

      Thank you for those kind words. I love trying out new stones. And its a GREAT excuse to buy even more, although my wife may not always agree :P

      I find that splash&go too and the feedback does not change if you soak it say 15mins or so. I find the finish very polished for 2k, perhaps like well polished 3-4k. It is not too fast and tends to load up somewhat. Nice feedback and good finnish but I prefer usually faster stones with yet better feedback. Other stones at 2k range need a step up to finer polishing stone to get same finish though.
      A nice stone but not perfect. It can be tricky for a beginner with improper technique because it is somewhat easy to dig into the stone with edge leading strokes if you use some force. (like in any other stone that is not very hard)
      It is a plesent experiance for a hobbyist interested in testing different stones like myself.

    As i said on Facebook its sticky in the first layer remove maybe a whole millimeter with a diamond plate then its a good bit better its a soft stone more like 4 k pretty okay fast. Its a good scratch remover thats for sure if you are doing thinning and such removing the scratches there. Use it on some san mai white or blue steel and be amazed on how good the cladding can look and how good the edges are.
    Good learning stone to control pressure and to learn control over the burr.
    Its a stone that takes time to learn for example pressure is very much king on this stone different pressures and different steels is waaay different on this stone. Try of you have a good san mai or maybe even a honyaki
    And i would not do so many stropping strokes on that stone more edge leading as stropping strokes gives you a bigger burr and weaker finnished edge can do sideways strokes to. Its a hard stone to master but its a good allround stone

      Thanks for the feedback. Definately agree, its a really soft stone so its easy to dig the knife in. I was a bit hesitant, but more confident on today's sharpening session. I'll be doing a follow-up video after i get some hours on it though.
      I usually ease up on the pressure on the stropping strokes towards the end to decrease the size of the burr, and then the edge leading strokes to remove it. I especially do this when im not going on the leather strop afterwards.:)

      @@lofotenknifeworks2278 yes sir, but if you do alternating say 2 stropping strokes then edge leading to cut it of then into strop again repeat instead of so many stropping strokes in a row the edge will be a little stronger at least in my small testing i have foun that but what works works 🙂

      @@lofotenknifeworks2278 no problem ive checked with a microscope and you see a difference actually between edge leading or stropping after some use.

    I though i could buy only one stone to sharpen my kitchen knives. Thought this would be the one. Then i read i have to be careful not to damage it. As a beginner i surely will. So what then? Can it be then repaired with a grinding block? There is a lot of stone there.

      For shure you can. :) it is a very soft stone, so it's easy to gouge the stone if you are not careful. But it can easily be fixed with a flattening stone, or even som wet and dry sandpaper :)

    Hi I would like to know how the grenn brick of joy perform on harder steel (PM). I am really interested in buying one. But I have some SG2 and on HAP 40 knife. What do you think about that? Is it too soft?

      I have yet to test it on really hard steel, but on blue#2 it works like a charm. I have a few knives ordered, so I'll be able to te it properly in a few days time :)

      I've found the Shapton glass 320/GBOJ/bare leather gave a good finish. Maybe a touch too refined though.
      I recently did Shapton 320/ Naniwa lobster 4000(stropping strokes only)/bare leather loaded with diamond compound. Results were a still refined edge but with far more aggressive bite. Perfect for large volume veg prep ;)

      @sonekekoster, I have sharpened s30v and s90v on my green brick of joy and while it’s slightly slower I’ve been happy with the edges I’ve gotten :)
      I don’t recommend starting on the green brick for these steels, though. I find it works better as a finishing stone on hard steels and needs a diamond progression for the lower grits

    Does Naniwa produce a large brick in 3000#?

      I dont think so. But the chosera 3000 is a full inch thick so it's pretty close 😅

    Will the green brick of joy sharpen Yu Kurosaki SG/r2 stainless.. Rockwell 62-63????

      Yes it will. BUT it will wear down faster and take a little bit longer. But then again that is true for all stones and harder steels :)

    So is this a soaking stone or not. I want to put cashew lacquer for more suppo.

      I wouldnt put cashew laquer on it. its molded and have a uniform structure throughout. I would not soak it for more than a few minutes before use. some of the bonding agent naniwa use is known for dissolving in water. hence why you should not soak choseras, the snow white etc. for longer periods. Put putting cashew laquer on it seems excessive. :)
