    Only USA still uses SMS for daily communication, the rest of the world uses SMS only for 2FA tokens and some transactional notifications. It is normal to have at least 3 or 4 messaging apps installed, and it's not a big deal to use them all

I find it redundant when we are living in the age of internet and we still rely on sms for extra verification step and all that can we just solve it to like an email or some app that actually use wifi? I usually don't comment but...
    I really connected with this video. I relate so much with the part that "texts don't properly convey emotions but only the information". It is inherently one of the worst ways of human communications.
    The depth a conversation can go to without talking and just with expressions and body language can never be totally translated through any other means of communication. Video calls, Future AR Communication or some other method won't work.
    I have so much to talk about and RUclips comments are definitely one of the worst ways to get an emotion through.
    Anyways, have a good one 🎂.

    This was excellent David thank you, I really apprecaite how thoughtfully you analyzed this. The sad and frustrating thing to me is how many people can't look past the limitation and use another platform, they reduce it to the lowest common denominator saying stuff like, "Why don't you just get an iPhone?" Rather than choosing one of the myriad options (telegram, whatsapp etc.) When the reality may be a million reasons people choose android. It may just suit them better due cost, flexibility, taste whatever. But generally the "why don't you just get an iPhone?" folks don't think past the convenience with which they can communication their feeligns to think about why someone else might prefer or need to choose something else and approach with kindness or empathy. It's tough that it's easier for people to essentally say, "Spend money so it's easier for me to communicate the way I want to." Rather than "Yeah I could take 10 seconds to set up and use an app that is free so we can both communicate better together!" hmmmpffff I'll step off my soapbox now. Hahaha. Thanks again for your great video.

    • @ArthurZakaryan23
      @ArthurZakaryan23 2 года назад

      That's because while so many avoid stating the obvious for fear of not being politically correct, Americans are lazy and they value convenience and ease of use above all else. No other country has more iPhone users and accepts being told what's best for them more than the US. I could explain the pros of a default app alternative till I'm blue in the garage but if it involves downloading, signing up then trying to convince friends and family to do the same then that's too much work, they'll accept the default.

    • @sethtoybes9392
      @sethtoybes9392 2 года назад +2

      @@ArthurZakaryan23 While iPhones are far more heavily used in the US I don't see it as a problem unique to the US or because people are just particularly lazy, that ignores that fact that iMessage does work well and do what the user wants but signing up for a new service is unfortunately a large barrier for most. They want to just get the phone and use it. The metaphor I've heard before is needing a certain type of gas for your car to get to different locations. It's a pretty big annoyance. I do see your point and believe me I find it frustrating but it's more of a strategic choice on Apple's behalf than just human nature.

    Really awesome video David. You hit the nail on the head with explaining why iMessage is so popular that I don't think that other people understand. One thing that I would like to add is read receipts. I love texting my best friend, maybe late at night, and we're just talking about random stuff, and you send a dumb message and it doesn't say "delivered"-- it says "read 11:48 pm". That means that she didn't go to another app, she's actively engaging in a conservation with me. That adds so much to the conservation, especially to the ones you care a lot about. Add in the typing indicator while I'm waiting for her response to my dumb comment and it makes it feel like we're actually having a real conservation. There really isn't a much better feeling than texting someone you care about late at night and you feel like they're right there with you instead of sending a message through a phone.
    You don't get that with SMS. Maybe you should, and Apple should definitely support RCS, but you just don't get that close feeling when texting with your friend that has an android phone. Unless you move to a different app, which increases the friction SO MUCH.

    • @DavidImel
      @DavidImel  2 года назад +2

      This is a really interesting point! I actually originally had read receipts on my list but I had removed it because they end up stressing me out and I didn’t see much of a positive in them. But it’s really great to hear that they can help with communication in the way you described. Thank you for sharing!

    • @GiulianoReali
      @GiulianoReali 2 года назад +2

    This analysis is fantastic. I DESPISE having important conversations via text and have had a lot of falling outs with people I cared about because of the missing context / emotional content. In my country we default to WhatsApp and not having this "bubble color classism", I still find it's very difficult to communicate efficiently only via text. I can imagine it must be pretty rough in the US. Phones are meant to communicate and bring us closer together, but this is a clear case of company greed literally affecting people's relationships. There has to be more regulation towards what the Apples and the Googles and the Samsungs of the world do, their decisions have tremendous impact and I feel like the legal / regulatory aspect of tech is decades behind the technical aspect. Right to Repair is a very good example of this.

    I have a degree in Telecommunications and have studied Information Theory along with the entire race to reduce the number of bits sent that laid the foundation to encryption methods.
    Apple today is what it is because it knows how to emotionally connect with the consumers to generate a need for their products even when there isn’t one, so it is no surprise that at the core of iMessage also lies an emotional aspect that Apple so dearly wants to hold on to.
    Looking forward to your next video. Tc!

      Even worse when you think that that the only government organisation really pushing for consumer rights and open standards atm is the EU. People are seemingly content with monopolistic companies controlling their lives under the guise of a "free market" - which is obviously only free where governers are getting lobbying money and their stocks are going up.
      I know Google are also one of these companies, but I really hope they add their own "X liked this post" reaction messages because someone needs to force apples hand here, and governments are either too scared or incentivised not to get involved.
      As a socialist, I'm a pretty big critic of a lot of what the EU have done, but their current stance on privacy, consumer rights and anti-monopolies is uplifting.

    the fact that Engineering students don’t know about Shannon’s theory but Advertising students study that during the first year of uni is just… wow

      I can't speak for other branches but computer science engineering people actually are very familiar with information theory since it's very crucial to a lot of CS topics.
      That advertising students study it in the first year sure comes as a surprise to me, though! i'm a physics major and information theory is very closely related to thermodynamics but we don't actually really learn it as part of the standard physics curriculum.

    Loved the video. Was the inside out t-shirt intentional though ? 😛

    Informative video! It's very strange from a non-US perspective to see how much stock a lot of people seem to put into the default apps. For my every day I use Discord for my friends, Facebook Messenger for school and default (SMS or iMessage) for my family.

    Hey David, I hope people also look into the server side of RCS. If you're using a carrier variant of the S22 they use carrier specific RCS servers. The AT&T RCS servers can't openly communicate with TMobile or Jibe servers which makes the whole system broken.

    I first watched your Pixel video and I was intrigued. Then I spotted you in one of the MKBHD BTS video, I was even more intrigued. Why don't you guys make a collaborative video or something?

    Hey David, I believe some people want you to keep making videos just like this one. Personally, I desperately need you to make more videos because I feel like people need a variety of perspectives on various topics, especially about tech, in this world. Some of us value your opinion, please do more.

    Hi David, had I watched this video earlier then we might have had another round of pizza and a couple more (or a lot more) beers. This is very interesting, a different way of structuring your previous chiaroscuro video, but still, this is very interesting. Actually, I took my Bachelor's degree in communications but more on the journalistic and advertising side. Having this communication explained in another way in this video indeed is very interesting. Nevertheless, nicely done!

    It's clear to see David truly is the "producer" of MKBHD videos. If MKBHD is Drake then David is 40. Or however you want to put that.
