  • Stefan Frank's 11th episode of his StrudelmediaLive Photobook Show: in this episode, titled "New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape”, Stefan looked at works that were included in the influential exhibition shown in 1975 at the George Eastman House's International Museum of Photography in Rochester, New York. He showed books featuring work by Lewis Baltz, Bernd and Hilla Becher's and Henry Wessel. And “New Topographics" also had a significant influence on Stefan's own newly published book” Irgendwo" ("Anywhere”), which he also presented.
In this photobook series, StrudelmediaLive teacher Stefan Frank is looking at recent (and not-so-recent) photobooks that you might not know about - and how they advance this unique medium.
This StrudelmediaLive Photobook Show was recorded on October 24, 2023.

Thank you. A most informative introduction and your clear ideas behind your own work certainly have made me think. Ta. ps glad you talked of the privacy and sensitivity issues.

Hi Stefan, do you know whether "New Topographics" has had much influence on cinema/videography? For example, in the film Sicario, the opening static shot, and some of the later aerial shots scrolling across the desert landscape, remind me of some of Lewis Baltz's Nevada and Park City photos.
Excellent video from you BTW, very informative. Now I know who came up with the pale grey background skies.
