For those of you who thinks the Frenchman should get the ippon really don't know judo.
The Frenchman didn't execute the throw, the Japanese did. The Japanese picked up the French, spun around, landed on his back to execute the throw and continued on to pin his opponent. The opponent tapped out.....ippon!!! Ask yourself this....did the Frenchman lift the Japanese or the Japanese lifted the Frenchmen. The Frenchman was powerless.

The American commentator described Darbelet as a rank outsider. Odd description to apply to a former European champion, multi world cup and super world cup winner

how can one not see he is tapping out?
first he taps on the jpn's leg with his hand, afterwards the matt with his hand and then with his feet...
    def. ippon!

Some say that the french did a throw. Technically he did but he also landed on his head. As the rule goes he would have been disqualified even if his throw counted.

You have to laugh and wonder why they would put such a commentator in charge of an Olympic final. Describing Darbelet, a European champion and gold medallist at the Moscow Super World Cup, as a rank outsider! He was clueless regarding Darbelet's record, citing his 17th place finish in Athens in 2004 where the French entered him in the -60kg category a weight he had not fought at since 1997.

i remember this final. the french should have won it, by scoring an ippon by ouchigari, but the refs had a shocker and didn't count it.... so the japan followed a ground technique
the japanese was even surprised to have win it. priceless and sad
japan and france will again have great fights at London 2012 :)

Everyone is saying that the French guy should have won. I personally think martial arts should not be based on points like this. The Japanese guy he dominated him, if it wasen't for "points" the Japanese guy was owning him. I think if you get hurt too bad to continue a MARTIAL ARTS competition, then you lose. He would have probably been killed if he was slammed on the sidewalk.
I know this is not that relevant... But it's just me ranting about martial arts being watered down by sport... =P

No because he grabbed onto his leg while he was on the ground and used that to cause the slam. thus no ippon awarded.
