I've steamed reclaimed yarn by putting it in a steamer basket over a pot of boiling water for a couple minutes then laying hank to dry. Its a pretty efficient way to steam a bunch of hanks. Great episode as always. Thank you!
the superwash process definitely affects the warmth! part of what makes wool so warm is that the scales help trap more air, thus creating more insulation. so stripping or "glueing down" the scales means it's not as lofty and not as warm. which is one of the reasons I like superwash merino for summer tops! I'm really curious to hear how you like the High Desert yarns, I love rambouillet and I've heard great things about Shaniko Wool Co! I'm attending a workshop with Jeanne Carver from Shaniko in April, I can't wait.
That makes total sense! I should use more SWM for summer tops since I've disliked working with more traditional summer fibers so much 😂 So far I'm really liking the High Desert, looking forward to updating everyone in the next video!
I don't have the pattern for the hat, so I can only speculate about two possible solutions: 1. If you want to make a tighter SSK, slip the second stitch purlwise instead of knitwise (I don't remember the explanation for why that works, but it does). 2. If you're getting ladders with magic loop, don't tug on the first stitch on the needle, but do tug a bit on the second stitch, which will even everything out. The April Cardigan looks great on you, and I have also learned (stubbornly) to go up a needle size right from the beginning, just to make the swatch, and stop wasting time! I'm wondering if you might enjoy wearing a removable button or shawl pin of some kind on that shawl that's too thick to tie a knot in (Jul Designs make some interesting stuff in that category).
Superwash is not as warm as virgin wools because no scales and less air trapping. That's part of the reason that people appreciate the Musselburgh pattern because most use SW yarn with it and it gives you 4 layers of fabric around your ears and does provide some warmth that way.
I felt the same way about my alpaca garments previous until I washed them the second time. After the second wash, it was absolutely gorgeous and way less prickly. Just some of my history!
I'm so interested in how that works for people. I always do that and still, it ladders. Sometimes i feel like pulling the second stitch even makes my ladders worse 🤔 yet everyone says thats the thing to do.
Hey! I have the same problem with the laddering on decreases when I ssk, recently I watched a reel that recommended also knitting through the back loop on non-decrease rounds to keep the tension neat. I've only tried it once in a pair of socks but it looks SO much better. Hope this helps!
A lovely episode, as always 🙌As others are saying, superwash is colder than non-superwash, and the latter can felt slightly when being worn, which will make the hat more wind resistant.
I knit my father-in-law a shawl collar cardigan in the KP High Desert Tweed. It has worn so nicely, minimal pilling, structure is great, blocked out so soft. It's a great yarn! Hope you have a good experience with it too.
very nice job on the April! i think everyone needs a heathered gray cardi. yours fits perfectly, esp with the pleated trousers. as a short person w/ narrow shoulders, i love contiguous construction; i just finished Albiona M's TULC [also a saddle shoulder], highly recommend. i also knit a little tight, so when i read that Eliz Zimmerman pooh-poohed knitting worsted at 5 st/" on 8's, i was a little...miffed [is that still a word?]. btw, thx for putting in the time to add time stamps and links--super helpful 🙂. sry to hear abt your experience w/ that alpaca blend; i've used mariquita a couple times and found it very soft.
I finally made it to the end of the episode (stuff intervened), and I'm so looking forward to your assessment of the KP High Desert yarn. I've been curious ever since I saw it in their catalog. So much good stuff going on here! 🙂
I am so excited for a beanie comparison video, so needed! I agree with the oslo hat yarn quantity requirement, frustrating. Looking forward to a beanie comparison ❤😊
Superwash yarns are cooler, and their processing involves toxic chemicals. Many also shed microplastics. While newer environmentally sound processes are being developed, I always look for GOTS or OEKO Tex certifications and support farm yarns, non-superwash yarns, and naturally died fibers.
I loooove the bean comparison idea. Can not wait :) you are very brave to do the Ollie surgery I hope it will come out great. You inspired me to start prepping for April cardigan I had that pattern in my favorites forever. Overall such a nice day to start my Saturday watching your podcast. Did you do any more little scarves other than Turtle dove and this pretty Poppy one?
I hope you enjoy your April Cardigan project! The only other small scarf I've made is the Sophie Scarf by Petite Knit. I didn't love that one as it's very thin and I didn't wear it very much! (Ended up gifting it)
I've only completed a few superwash garments and they do grow a bit with blocking! More so than natural fibers but I haven't experienced any crazy growth that I am unhappy with.

Non superwash significantly warmer - scales allow for more air trapping.

Oh my god, the image of Berlioz with the little red necktie killed me, the comparison is perfect 😂
Someone on instagram said I had the same outfit as Berlioz so I HAD to include it in the video!

Good to know, maybe I'll try washing it again!
Would love to hear/see your hat perspective!!
the turtleneck and the April cardigan together are sooo cute that’s an elite winter outfit combo
For laddering, pull tighter on the second stitch on the new needle. This trick has fixed my issues, hope it helps!

I love you Laulu shawl! The color is amazing and looks very good on you. It made me wanna to try in a bright color. We’ll see…😅❤
So happy you mentioned that brownstone beanie. Looks like the perfect blend between the Oslo and Stockholm which are my 2 favourite hat patterns.
A lovely episode, as always 🙌As others are saying, superwash is colder than non-superwash, and the latter can felt slightly when being worn, which will make the hat more wind resistant.
Your knits are so beautiful. I am enjoying your podcasts very much.
I do love that red scarf on you!!
Thank you!
The colour of the Brownstone Beanie is absolutely stunning on you! Can’t wait for your beanie round up video.
I love your style - your videos are inspiring!
Can't wait for your beanie comparison podcast. Happy knitting!

Lots of fabulous knitting! And inspiration. For sure going to try the Brownstone hat. Can't wait!

Really interested in the high desert yarn, I’ve been eyeballing the sport weight for a while to make a gansey sweater.
Beautiful as always (you and your knits)! I’m interested in your beanie collection comparison video whenever you get to it!😊
The color of your stick season is so dreamy! 🌚
Дуже гарні вироби. Зв'язано охайно. ❤❤❤❤❤ бажаю успіхів у творчості
I am so excited for a beanie comparison video, so needed! I agree with the oslo hat yarn quantity requirement, frustrating. Looking forward to a beanie comparison ❤😊
Beautiful knits! The april cardigan is the perfect fit. So excited to see progress on the stick season sweater and ollie!
Your sweater came out just beautiful!

That is such a cute cardigan
I love your 80s-style pleated pants😊

I’d like to hear your take of the high dessert sport.
Beautiful cardigan
I find superwash to not be warming - I’ve stopped using superwash wool because it doesn’t help keep me warm the way regular wool does
Superwash wool is not as warm as natural wool. 😊
Hi! Can you talk about your experience of knitting sweaters with super wash yarn? Does it grow a lot after blocking? Thanks in advance! :)
I've only completed a few superwash garments and they do grow a bit with blocking! More so than natural fibers but I haven't experienced any crazy growth that I am unhappy with.
Thank you! ☺️
I have a sock WIP which doesn't get finished because I don't want to knit it's alpaca yarn 🙈
The oversized sweater look wasn’t great for us petite gals back in the 90s, either. I love your April cardigan, I’m finally casting on mine today.
❤🌈
Its ONLY petit knitting AS always in your podcast.....do you have deal with her??? Just asking
Today's video featured over 10 projects and only 1 was a Petite Knit pattern. I don't have any affiliation, I just really like her patterns!
