It’s all brushed steel, Nokias and floppy disks. What a time to be alive!
Seeing the floppy disk made me realise just how old this film is.
Back when technology was actually cool...
Now every piece of tech is a black rectangle.
I didn't see a floppy but it was 1997 so it should have been a CD R 💿
Ericsson spent so much money on that product placement and yet you come away with Nokia...
Also I love how Bond pushes over the 300 million dollar satellite on his way out just to be a dick.
Maybe hoping they'd care and stop to "oh no now what" so he'd have more escape time
qmto: Yeah. You're so right.
@jeff lockaby hes going to kill them later anyway
He has license to be a dick...
😹 😹 😹
I like how he sneaks in, flawlessly.
She sets off the alarm and slinks away nearly unnoticed and yet Bond has to brute force his way out because she screwed up.
This is what is called stepping on each other’s toes.
Yes I used to own a bond book that listed logic flaws in all the movies up til this one and their observation was how come carvers men only pay any attention to bond when she's a spy too
@@John-tj9to Because men are the expendable gender.
@Bryan Herbert .....

I like how he doesn't say much here, but you can tell what James is thinking by the way he looks around the place, finding the safe, checking things out. A good reminder that 007 isn't just an action hero, he's also a very intelligent character.
I also like how when he moves one leg to the front, and moves the other leg he can walk.
Also the best 007 there will ever be. His style can still not be beat.

In retrospect, Tomorrow Never Dies was BRILLIANT. It was avant-garde in that it dealt with the subject of media consolidation and the media's ability to control the narrative when there are virtually no alternative voices.
This movie really does feel more appropriate with each passing year, doesn't it?
Up to and including the villain basically being Rupert Murdoch.
@@Arbron Murdoch? Too old, no diversification. I was thinking Bezos (Washington Post for the media, Blue Origin for the missile tech).
💯
I agree with your sentiment but that is not what Avant-garde means……
@@Arbron Yes without a doubt the MSM leans far too conservative.
One of the films that I love for its quiet "Sneaky Bond On A Mission" moments. The soundtrack, the direction and Brosnan himself managed to make things like Bond sneaking in the Office and looking for a decoder or even just walking around the place really entertaining.
Yes. I totally agree. There's a real Ian Fleming atmosphere in the film.
Tomorrow Never Dies is a very underrated film and the manipulation of the media theme was way ahead of its time.
Pierce Brosnan was the best Bond. He was just unfortunate with the times his Bonds were made.
@@ritahorvath8207 I dont know why people think it was "unfortunate" when he made 1 of the best movies (Goldeneye), 1 really good one (this), 1 quite good (TWINE) and only 1 bad one? Craig so far has 1 amazing one with Casino, a very good one with Skyfall and 2 absolute trainwrecks with Quantum and Spectre...
yeah we don't get enough of that.
Can't beat a good Bond line... "They'll print anything these days" 😂
Haha I liked when he say “looking for a new story?”

At least that guy made the front page
@@questioneverything9606 And red all over
He became his own obituary.
One of the most underrated Bond films
I agree.
I truly agree
It does get bashed a lot, and while I do see it's faults an weaknesses, it's still a very tight, slick and enjoyable Bond movie. Then I see The World is Not Enough often getting a lot more praise when that's an absolute joke of a story with horrendous characters and really lame dialogues and acting throughout. In fact, Tomorrow Never Dies could even just about squeeze into my top 10 Bond movies (just!). Goldeneye and Licence to Kill are my two absolute favourites, though really it totally depends on my mood.
@@AD-kv9kj the word is not enough. Wasn't bad for me
Pierce Brosnan’s era will have its resurgence in popularity, including Tomorrow Never Dies! We’ll all be there when it happens. 😁
1:59 the way bond is calmly just sitting there thinking to himself where he would hide something important 😂
I like to think that intelligence agents have Law Enforcement Training where they teach all the criminal tricks. Bonforte fall back on that in this situation.

Brosnan and Cruise has the best running style. They give it their all.
I'd like to see them running away from Steven Segal.
I think craig had a cool run too, him and brosnan looked badass running
Want both brosnan and cruise in a frame of movie
Great 👍 comment 👏..
Cruise has the best running style obviously. But criags running style is better than brosnan
Always liked Piers Brosnan as Bond. A good mix of humour, intelligence & sophistication with a bit of psycho thrown in for good measure.🤣👍
He also had the best facial expressions in life or death situations. Non-verbal acting is some of the hardest to pull off, imo. This scene is a prime example. Bond legit looks in fear that he could die at several points in this scene. Brosnan should have got 7 movies like Connery and Moore, but I guess he didn't want to play the role anymore after Die Another Day.
@@drlee2 Too bad he got tied up Remington Steele's contract or else he would have started playing Bond in the early 80s
@@drlee2 He was still in talks for a 5th Bond movie after 2002's Die Another Day, but the studio wanted to take the franchise in a different direction because even though Die Another Day was financially successful, it received negative reviews from critics and is generally regarded as being too over the top and unrealistic.
Nobody goes to a Bond movie expecting top notch realism, but there are still certain points where we need to draw the line and Brosnan's last outing as Bond crossed several of them. The Bourne Identity also came out around that time and shifted the paradigm of what we expected from action focused spy movies.
So, with the producers wanting to take the franchise in a new direction, the negative views on the latest Bond movie and Brosnan's salary being on the high side at the time (he did play Bond in 4 financially successful movies, so that's understandable), it felt like a perfect time to switch to a new Bond while they revamped the franchise. It would be cheaper for the studio and fit in with the change in direction they wanted to take.
On the one hand, yes, I'm a bit miffed that Brosnan didn't get a proper last Bond movie to bid farewell to the fans He is my favorite Bond and I would have loved to see in one more Bond movie before Craig took over. He was young enough to do one more, at the time. On the other hand, Craig was really good as Bond in Casino Royale and its success blew up more than a lot of people were expecting, so you can't complain about the results. Clearly, it worked out.
At any rate, it's not Brosnan who didn't want to play the part anymore, it's the studio that wanted to change direction and took that opportunity to look for a new Bond at the same time, since they were faced with times where people were ready to go back to more grounded and gritty spy movies, mostly jumpstarted by The Bourne Identity and with the Craig movies following suit in that same style of gritty and character based spy movies, compared to the gadget heavy and almost surrealistic mess that was Die Another Day.
@@drlee2He wanted to 1 or 2 more films after Die Another Day (and was expected to), but barb and michael didn’t like him and were just waiting for the right time (after his contract ran out) to get rid of him. If only Cubby had lived longer 🙄
The falling into the printing press kill is probably one of the most brutal in the whole series. That guy was probably just a normal guard as well and not in on Carver's plan. When James makes his quip it's more to protect his sanity over what he just did.
007 is pretty much a psychopath lol he has no remorse for the people he kills. I doubt he looses sleep over it.
I'll be frank, after all these decades, only now did I notice the safe was filled with what was probably dirty cash, drugs and pornography. Just to emphasize the guy was an evil villain.
EDIT: And yes, to those who wondered I meant Gupta, not Carver. Also, a henchman is still a villain, just not the archvillain. In fact it's the smaller time guy who is going to be the stereotype for having such....vices.
Yeah. He really had a dirty secret very hidden.
Hey Frank, I'll be Karl.
Can I still be Garth?
I always had the impression that this was Gupta's safe and porn/drugs. German porn for a possibly German guy . . . makes sense. Doesn't seem like Carver's bag. Although you might have been talking about him anyway.
DaveDexterMusic agreed. It was clearly Gupta’s safe, not Carver’s. And Gupta was hardly an evil villain. More like a lieutenant henchman. A bad guy, to be sure, but a guy you could count on to die a relatively uneventful and early death.
I love this film "They'll print anything these days" a classic film

For 1997, that phone was pretty advanced. They are advanced now but some of those features still don’t appear.
You gotta admit his phone played somewhat of a vital role in this situation, and the gadgets on it were pretty sweet
Would've been 1996 at the time of the filming... I'm not sure it ever had an actual colot display though.. Nokia Communicator that was released in 1996 was an actual release that mimicked the features of this, just without a color screen. This phone was released as Motorola R380... A bit different to the one in the Bond movie.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 did have a self destruct feature!

I miss Pierce Brosnan as Bond
I miss him too,bond gadgets,hot girls,wit ECT ECT. Craig doesn't have these
@@fridaynightnicktoons6885 That's cos Brosnan was brilliant and Craig is dreadful
The thing is Brosnan has a under cover casual quality that secret agents are expected to have, Craig on the other hand looks too suspicious & bang bang loud to be a secret agent there is nothing secretive or unassuming about that fellow and he gets easily caught in most instances!.. To me watching this scene sure made me feel Brosnan is always the true mastermind bond because of how he smartly operates in the shadows like a real secret agent should plus he is simply too good looking on camera.
@@varunemani My take on Craig as Bond...
Craig is not James Bond, he's a normal action character like Jason Bourne
He fell in love with 2 women and left MI6 twice all in the space of 4 movies....
What kind of James Bond is that.....
Could you ever imagine Connery, Moore or Brosnan doing anything like that...
If you want the Bond from the books then watch the Dalton or Craig Bond, he used to have charisma and humor in the form of one liners, was suave, sophisticated, killed the bad guy and most importantly chased the women,( the eye for the ladies) all while saving the world, If you don't have all these qualities then how can you possibly still be James Bond anymore....
Bond isn't an icon for being Joe average secret agent
Connery set the scene and it was continued through Moore and Brosnan, This is what separated him from all other action movie characters and why every guy wanted to be him....
I love the Bourne movies and have watched them all many times but if Bourne suddenly started chasing the women, developing a sense of humor or began being suave and sophisticated I'd be totally put off the character and that's why I was put off Craig from the beginning
It's why Moore, Brosnan and Connery were brilliant and Craig is nothing more than discount Jason Bourne.
@@pr-tj5by I agree completely. Couldn't have explained it better myself.
Craig is a good action star, Looks very tough. But doesn't fit the bond archetype.
The David Arnold soundtrack was phenomenal, and not just in this film.
Alejandro Palacios I do like the sneaking into the office and wall safe music. Hamburg Break In on the soundtrack. Its very cool.
Yes - the music always makes the scenes better !
"They'll print anything these days" never gets old 😂
Piers Brosnan = An actor who's made even feebly scripted films watchable. I think this was a decent Bond effort though, and just right for his interpretation of 007.
Pierce Brosnan shows that as James Bond that he has nerves of Remington Steele!
The script for TND was in scripting hell right up to filming, and even then was rewritten several times over. Pryce and Hatcher were used like cheap C-listers during the early rewrites, forcing the writers to redo it to improve things, but Hatcher was still used poorly. She regretted taking the role.
I think Pierce deserved a 5th film. Shame his movies went down in quality as time progressed. Even though I dont hate any of them, even Die Another Day. Even that one has a few great moments.
I actually like Tomorrow Never Dies better than Goldeneye....Goldeneye to me is ruined due to the cheese of the therapist in the car and the wall bending at the Chemical plant when he leans his back against it, the cheese is too strong. Granted Goldeneye on N64 is was one of the greatest videos games of all time.
You're feebly scripted
Just love this scene. The stealth, the music, use of gadget, the chase, the quote when bond kills someone, and just when you think bond has escaped, nope. He still has to keep escaping. Amazing stuff
Agreed. The last 20 mins set in Germany is easily one of the best 20-min bits in Bond history (starting with this scene and ending with the carpark chase).
The music is so awesome in this movie.
This movie was filmed in a manner no other Bond movie was filmed. It is unique and it would always be my best.

The office scenes here i.e. not those showing the printing press, were filmed at IBM in Bedfont Lakes, London. I love this movie. This is probably one of, if not my top, favorite Bond movie of all time. I love how Bond is portrayed as the experienced agent while the Chinese agent is making rookie mistakes that are making Bond's life harder. They really show how much better of an agent Bond is in a scene like this where the Chinese agent would have gotten killed if Bond hadn't been there when she set off the alarm. It showed that Bond did rely on gadgets, but he was also knowledgeable to know there was more to being an agent than relying on gimmicks.
It’s a more gimmicky movie but Pierce plays it well
Just about to go to the big screen in Belfast for a rare re-showing of tomorrow never dies. I'm so excited to finally see it on the big screen 20 odd years later 😁

That little wave from Michelle Yeoh as she's escaping undetected and his reaction is a nice little touch to the scene. Lot of those little bits throughout the movie.
The soundtrack of this scene remembered me a lot of 007 Nightfire
Namely the first Phoenix Tower mission, the one where you stealth around and climb up and have to only KO guards instead of kill them.
