  • Claude Debussy (1862-1918)
    “L’isle Joyeuse” L. 106 (1903-1904)
    Nikolai Lugansky, 2019
    From Moscow Philharmonic Society
    “Debussy's L'îsle joyeuse (1903-1904) was inspired by Watteau's painting Embarkation for Cythere. Debussy's work is a single movement in a highly modified sonata form. Using a technique similar to Chopin's alteration of sonata form in his ballades, the lyrical second subject returns at the brilliant conclusion as a fortissimo paean. L'îsle joyeuse has an almost orchestral quality, as well as an unrelenting choreographic rhythmic drive. The cumulative effect is perfectly calculated and overwhelmingly successful. A number of hallmarks of Debussy's mature style -- parallel sonorities, whole-tone structures, multiple layers of sound, atmospheric effects, melodic fragmentation -- are in full evidence.”

    This piece has always moved me. When we get to that rapturous climax, it's like something reaches into me and I just 'know'. Debussy for me has always provided these all-too-fleeting moments of complete clarity since I first heard the Faun 50 years ago. My hair stood on end yet again and this time I had tears in my eyes as well!

      Yes, I love how he takes his time during the entire middle section at 2:24 and slows it down. This allows him to really extract the musicality out of it. Most pianists just power through this section thereby missing a lot of the subtlety.

    The introduction of the main melody at 2:24 is so rich, dense, voluptuous, sensual, makes you want to hug a field of grass on a Summer day

    The polyrhythm 3 against 5 in the mid-section is not right and doesn’t set-up climax at all.

      @@m.a.g.3920 that’s an old comment, and I haven’t listened to this video in a long time, but yes, that’s the only section that’s 3 against 5 in the piece.

      @@jtt6650in my opinion that part seems super dry and rhythmic instead of wavy as It should be... I do play this piece (still learning It tho, it's difficult). If you want to hear a surprisingly good version (IMO) you can try Jean-Luc Therrien's, very very good.

    Nice playing, but this is a counterfeit Steinway. Henry Steinway made an AMERICAN piano.

    • @nancyspada2240
      @nancyspada2240 3 дня назад

      It isn't but I think this piano is a Hamburg Steinway. If you look at the casing on either side of the key bed this one is rounded whereas the NY Steinway is angular. My husband, who was a Steinway Artist, had just such a piano. It isn't counterfeit but is made in the Hamburg factory. He also had a NY Steinway so I've been able to observe well over the years!

      @@nancyspada2240 The New York product now has rounded sheratons like just like the Hamburg. The new owners are bringing things in line with the German way. I don't like it.
