There's so much to do in Sydney, and if you ever run out of things to do (though highly unlikely), there is still a plethora of things to do. A couple hours drive from Sydney CBD is Hunter Valley, Australia's oldest and arguably most famous wine region. There is so much to do in the Hunter Valley, and whether you are looking to indulge, escape, or invigorate your senses, there is something for you.
Not too long ago, i spent a weekend in the Hunter Valley with a few of my friends, tasting a bunch of wine, eating a moderate amount of cheese and soaked in those beautiful vineyard views. I've complied a list of top things to do whenever you're in the Hunter Valley region, so if you're ever also in the area, here's a list of things you can also consider doing:
    1. Stop over at Simply D'vine Cafe for some brunch food
Address:151 Wine Country Dr, Nulkaba NSW 2325, Australia
    2. Alternatively, head over to Cafe Enzo for some hearty brunch
Rustic dining spot with a courtyard, coffee and Italian dishes cooked with locally sourced produce.
Address: Broke Rd &, Ekerts Rd, Pokolbin NSW 2320, Australia
    3. Check out the Hunter Valley Chocolate Company
Petersons Champagne House corner Broke & Branxton Rd Pokolbin, Corrabare NSW 2325, Australia
    4. Check out Hunter Valley Cheese Company
447 McDonalds Rd, Pokolbin NSW 2320, Australia
    5. Go wine tasting at a plethora of vineyards & estates in the Hunter Valley:
    i) McGuigan Wines, Hunter Valley
Address: 447 McDonalds Rd, Pokolbin NSW 2320, Australia
''A celebrated Hunter Valley winery offering boutique wines including the McGuigan Cellar Select Chardonnay 2017.''
ii) Audrey Wilkinson Vineyard, Hunter Valley
Address: 750 De Beyers Rd, Pokolbin NSW 2320, Australia
"Rated by Gourmet Traveller Wine as one of the Top 10 Cellar Doors in the country, and the only one in NSW, our Cellar Door is perched atop a foot hill of the Brokenback Mountain Ranges, and is a true must see site of the Hunter Valley."
iii) Hanging Tree Wines, Hunter Valley
Address: 294 O'Connors Rd, Pokolbin NSW 2320, Australia
"he Hanging Tree Wines Vineyard is perched on the most scenic ridge of Pokolbin in the sensational Hunter Valley, an easy 2 hour drive from Sydney and 40 minutes from Newcastle. Featuring a fully stocked cellar, prominent cellar door, luxury accommodation and access to a wide variety of attractions in the Hunter Valley, Hanging Tree Wines is your new home away from home."
    6. Grab some comfort food at Kee Ho Restaurant, Hunter Valley
132 Vincent St, Cessnock NSW 2325, Australia
    7. Head on over to the Hunter Valley Gardens
"Hunter Valley Gardens is in the heart of Hunter Valley wine country, located in Pokolbin, NSW, Australia. It opened in 2003 and is now open everyday of the year except Christmas Day."
Address: 2090 Broke Rd, Pokolbin NSW 2320, Australia
    Additional things to check out:
    1. Muse Dining - Award Winning Hunter Valley Restaurant
"Located at the entrance to Pokolbin in the iconic Hungerford Hill Winery, Muse Restaurant aims to be a showcase of Hunter Valley produce with an emphasis on seasonality and quality."
Address: 2450 Broke Rd, Pokolbin NSW 2320, Australia
    2. Hot air balloon Hunter Valley
"Multi-award winning Balloon Aloft has been offering Hunter Valley balloon flights for over thirty-five years. Hunter Valley balloon flights begin at sunrise and take in views of the picturesque wine regions of Pokolbin, Lovedale, Rothbury or Broke."
Address: 1/26 Lodge Rd, Lovedale NSW 2325, Australia
And if you read til the end of my description - include the word 'red' in your comment if you noticed my asian flush during this video...if you didnt, include the phrase “wait what?!”

Thanks for the wonderful video Janice. Just a silly question.. cos it’s easy to go over the drinking limit.. how do you get away with wine testing and not going over the drinking limit? Is it as easy as having a designated driver? I just feel bad for that person so I’m trying to figure out how to get everyone to have a good time and also drive sensibly. X

Thank you! I learned something! I knew Australia has a wine region with a booming wine industry, but I had never heard of Hunter Valley! It looks like a relaxing destination to eat and drink locally farmed products. It very much has a similar vibe like the Napa and Sonoma Valleys of the San Francisco Bay Area. I only wish you had more footage of the farmlands and landscapes, but you were doing what I would be doing, which is being inside and shopping. Red? I didn't notice, because I am watching at minimal brightness on my phone at 3:30am in the morning after I got notification of your new posting.

    • @JaniceFung

it really is heaps relaxing. i havent yet visited Napa & Sonoma Valley yet but i hope to one day!
haha must be the minimal brightness then :P 3:30 AM?! thanks for tuning in so early? late? in the day - i appreciate it!!

The Hunter Valley has a bit of a split personality. It's partly beautiful vineyards and pretty farmland bordered by mountains and hills; but it's also underlain by vast amounts of high quality coal accessed through huge holes in the ground and hauled away by the trainload to Newcastle (formerly a steel making city) where it's loaded onto ships, mostly supplying China. The vineyards must be hating the current (Dec 19) extensive bush fires and persistent smokey conditions; as the latter could easily wreck this year's vintage.

Fun video JF......A good rule of thumb for buying good wine is to "stay-away from screw-tops and boxes.. 📦🍾🍇 LOL", unless you are a teen sneaking a bottle of "Boone's Farm" or MD 2020" to the school dance. (Not admitting to anything!) Also noticed the cheek flush 😳 after about 6 tastings. I don't like dry wines so I stick with the German style like Rieslings, etc.

    • @JaniceFung
      @JaniceFung  5 лет назад

thanks Rob! ahaha yes i stay away from boxed wine now

Hi Janice! Any recommendations on where to get "sweet wines" in Hunter Valley? :) Not particularly a regular wine drinker, so was hoping for something that has less alcohol content on it like Moscato or something similar..
Soooo many options, it's becoming quite overwhelming 😳😆 Will be traveling there next week.. Thanking you heaps in advance!!
