I think it's a little more different, Eren has always had the same goal, the only thing that gave Eren any spark in his life was his constant fighting for "freedom". Never to actually achieve it, after the rumbling eren would be just constantly bored of his life. Things like this was also shown in a different timeline or anime which was about how his life would be in a school life. He was constantly bored and thought there was nothing to life until he dreamt about a zombie apocolypse happening, after that dream all he could think about was hoping for there to be some kind of apocalypse in the future.
