The reverence in the way you spoke was heartwarming. Someone lived and loved, laughed and cried, was born and died within these walls. That surely deserves some quiet reflection on those who came after. Thank you.

I love & look forward to all of your videos! This one in particular spoke to me as I've been the caretaker of several generations of family heirlooms. My wife & I always feel the same respect & appreciation when we attend estate sales. It's a reminder that all of this is temporary & we're only the caretakers for a little while. ❤️

I absolutely agree with your philosophy on estate sales, I have been so inspired by the lives of people I’ve met only through the legacy they left in their homes. It is a rare privilege to be able to wander through and observe their lifestyle and take away objects that will bless my own life and legacy

Hello Mary! There is no thing quite as lovely & inspirational as a home with history. My great, great grandparents built their home on Church Hill (named appropriately after the church that inhabited my great grandfather's former school house) & then built 3 homes for their sons, one of which my mother still calls home to this very day. It gutted me to see my grandparents home, with well over 100 years of antiques, broken up but at least the contents mainly went to my grandparents 5 children and their 16 grandchildren. I love living with my family antiques because it keeps their memory alive and comforts me by making where ever I live feel like home. Thank you again for another fantastic book & trip to those magnificent homes.

I love the former fabrics with all the Jacobian prints and colors in the older drapes, bed canopies, dust ruffles, etc. It's just so much more soul fulfilling than the bland white, gray, and black of today. There's personality in color and design, I think. Thank you for the interest in sharing such. It's a great pleasure to watch.

What a wonderful way to start the book reviews for 2025. It was especially meaningful to me to go with you and Daniel to the estate sale. Sometimes I have felt a little invasive to walk through them but you showed me that if I allow the objects to find me, they will share a place in my home and heart as they did for the former owner. Thank you Mary ❤

Mary, I have never commented before on your channel, but I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate just how beautiful and uplifting it is!! I have just placed “Past Present” on hold at my library and I can’t wait to read it. And thank you for that lovely tour of that estate sale and with such a thoughtful tribute to that dear family. It is honoring their lives walking through those rooms with reverence and respect. (And I’m so glad you got those Elizabeth II pieces……I would have grabbed those too!!!) Thank you again for your wonderful work! 🏡💕🙏🏻

@@hillcountrycottage I’m so glad you enjoyed the video and the book. We went to the estate sale on Sunday and it began on Friday, so I can’t imagine the treasures that were there at the beginning of the sale. I wanted some of those window treatments so badly, but they were not selling them. The house had been “re decorated” in 1953 and it was fabulous…from the wallpaper to the fabrics. It was a true time capsule!

Dear Mary, I so appreciate your respect for the family that lived in this lovely home. When I have gone to estate sales I have the same feeling it’s a feeling that you have described so beautifully. This gentleman who served his country, travelled the world , went to work each day and as he walked through the door each night could smell what was for dinner in that charming kitchen. You could see in the fabrics and the wallpaper ,the paint colors his wife so tastefully selected. Sitting around the dining room table with the chandelier glistening and conversation about their day. I love the pieces you selected and I know that you and Daniel will think of them each time you see them. That is lovely isn’t it ? I do hope the new owners will keep and preserve this beautiful treasure of a home. Thank you .~ Mary

I was given an eBay gift certificate at Christmas, and thus far I've purchased a lovely 19th century Wedgwood majolica plate, and a tin box from the early twenties with Gloria Swanson on the lid (I'm a deranged old movie buff, and now I'm old, so it works on both counts), and they will find their place among my things, and probably only make sense to me, which is fine. If I were a decorator, that would be something I would stress to every client, that your rooms need only make sense to you, damn everyone else. The sensitive exploration of the estate sales was both moving, and thought provoking. As someone with no family, friends, and possibly strangers, will be dealing with my lifetime of acquisitions. Time for a gin-and-tonic! All the best to you, from the curmudgeon. P.S. Inspired by that gin-and-tonic, I just purchased that Herend caterpillar I mentioned sometime past! Hurrah for gin and gift cards!

Hello dear Mary.🤗 I hope you both had a Beautiful Christmas! I feel like I am finally part of the book club since I have this book. Even though it is not as glamorous as some of the books you have shown, I was somehow thrilled to see you were discussing this one today.
I absolutely loved the tour. I feel the same way when discovering historical homes. I want to know what their daily life was like, how they came to live in the home and what events shaped their lives while they were living there. I look foward to seeing how you incorporate the items you chose into your decor.
You have such a captivating voice. It is so pleasant to listen to you!! All the Best for 2025!!

Hello Mary, Thank you for this book review. However, it was when you were walking through the estate sale, I was thinking to myself how I always feel as though I am violating someone's personal space of cherished and loved items. Then you said exactly what I was thinking, and I thought boy, we are so "like-minded"! The owners of this beautiful home would be honored to know you now have possession of some of their cherished items.....I know I would be. Say hello to Daniel, have a great week and I will see you in the next one.! Hugs! :)

I have a chair that I got a decade ago from an estate sale. I still remember the elderly lady who owned it and say a prayer for her often when I see that chair!!
