Hello and welcome to the stunning aerial footage of the Island Nisyros part of Dodecanese archipelago, 14 hours by ferry from Piraeus Athens, Greece.
Known for its active volcano, Nisyros offers a unique landscape of craters, ancient villages, and stunning coastal views. Nikia, one of the most stunning villages on the island, sits dramatically on the edge of a cliff overlooking the caldera of the active volcano. The views from Nikia are simply breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding craters and the deep blue sea. Walking through the village, visitors are struck by its traditional whitewashed houses, narrow cobblestone streets, and colorful flowers that contrast with the stark, volcanic landscape.
Nisyros is home to several impressive volcanic craters. The Stefanos crater, the largest on the island, is an awe-inspiring sight with its wide, circular shape and the fumaroles emitting steam from beneath the earth's surface. Visitors can walk right up to the edge of Stefanos, feeling the heat and hearing the occasional rumble of the active volcano. Another remarkable site is the Polivotis craters, two distinct volcanic formations that offer insight into the island's geological past. The Flegethron crater is another active highlight, named after the river of fire in Greek mythology, where sulfurous fumes rise from the ground, adding to the island's mystique.
The island’s other villages add to its charm. Emporeios, located near the volcanic region, has preserved its authentic character, with its stone houses, narrow alleys, and quiet atmosphere. The village was affected by earthquakes in the past. Pali, a charming seaside village, is known for its relaxing beaches, quaint cafes and bakery. The nearby Loutra baths are famous for their therapeutic waters, which have been used since ancient times. These hot springs offer a soothing experience while taking in the views of the surrounding landscape.
The capital of Nisyros, Mandraki, is where visitors arrive by ferry and can explore the island’s main port area. The village is lively, with its picturesque harbor, lively streets, and numerous shops and restaurants. A visit to the Monastery of Panagia Spiliani, perched on a hill above the town, offers a chance to explore both the spiritual and architectural heritage of the island. Nearby, the Paleokastro, an ancient Byzantine castle, stands as a silent sentinel, offering a glimpse into the island's strategic past.
Nisyros is also famous for its abundance of cats, which roam freely around the villages, adding to the island's serene atmosphere. The island’s beaches are a unique experience, with the volcanic rocks creating a stark contrast to the deep blue of the sea. The black sand beaches, such as those near Pali, have a mysterious beauty, while the crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The volcanic stones, with their jagged edges and dark hue, add an otherworldly charm to the shoreline, making Nisyros a place like no other.
