@@maxonmendel5757 ds1 and ds2? to my ears the ds2 has a lot more mids, and its louder, it cuts better in a band mix. mode 1 sounds closer to the ds1, its darker but its not as “raw” as the ds1, mine sounds closer to a fuzz tbh
Rat is the go to for nasty distortion. Really miss the one I modded with a mosfet for a more organic amp distortion without having to have more than one pedal.
I think those pedals will sound even better in the amp’s distortion channel using the pedal’s gain knob not too high. It´ll shine a lot. Even though it is subjective.
You need a regular ds-1 to nail that sound or, lower the distortion on your rat. The rat at that high gain turns into a fuzz pedal. Dial it back to a 10 o’clock and tone to 11:30
The rat has more utility. The far left on gain knob is like overdrive, in the middle distortion, towards the right fuzz. If the rat was closer to 12:00 on the gain knob they would sound much closer
RAT is slightly articulated yet thicker than DS2. But both are pretty much equal when it comes to comparison, SO I would say I like them both on my pedalboard to spice up overall the performance.
I have a big box vintage reissue RAT and a DS-2, The DS-2 is underrated, it can overdrive to fuzz just like the RAT, mode two is mids boosted like the RAT. Sometimes i prefer the DS-2, it's they best Boss distortion and an awesome pedal, it has a unique clip to the waveform and a nice feel to the attack and sustain, its not inferior to the RAT, they are just different, 90% of the time the DS-2 is better in Turbo mode.
Got both. In hi gain mode they both almost sound the same. On low drive settings the Rat wins. It plays wells with other pedals or a drive channel and gives it that "Shenker wah" rhythm tone. Also... Nuno. lol...
@@txulallen you are wrong. Kurts guitar tech Earnie Bailey himself said that turbo mode was turned off at live at Reading and Kurt disliked the turbo mode tone (see ruclips.net/video/gckiTrGCJP0/видео.html&ab_channel=NirvanaGuitars ), Kurt had the midrange amp settings tweaked at that concert which is why it sounds so different
Wouldn’t the buffer in the ds-2 make the rat sound a bit different than if the ds-2 weren’t in front of it. I know the difference is probably 100% undetectable by the human ear, but the delusional tone chaser in me wants to hear it.
No, it's actually better theoretically since the whole point of buffers is to create consistent behaviour regardless of where they are in the chain. A True Bypass setup would mean where they sit in the signal is different and the signal arriving to them is different. The earliest custom built pedalboards for legendary guitarists were full of buffers and never true bypass. Just certain boutique manufacturers took the flaws of a handful of Boss pedals & ran with it, creating a wildly untrue myth that was already proven over a decade earlier.
@@3rdStoreyChemist Yes, but if you have a small rig of true bypass mod/delay pedals and only one drive. You'd want to accurately hear how it stands alone.
I didn't notice how BOSS changed the clean tone until I took out a boss pedal in my chain and the other drives sounded like crap. Small rig, no buffer needed. I put the Boss back, played and went "ok, i get it." This was in the stone ages before RUclips. lol... You can really tell.
@@meetthevanos The buffer is correcting the issue with the rig. You want a buffer as early as possible in the signal chain. The amount of pedals doesn't matter. There are some early MIJ Boss pedals that did alter the tone. But for the most part if you hear a difference when a buffer is placed into a rig, the issue is the rig, not the buffer. You heard a difference and blamed the wrong thing. Plenty of pedals do behave differently with a buffer in front. However most pedals engage their own buffers when active. So when you start engaging more than one at a time, you can get all sorts of changes in the sound. Having a buffer as early as possible keeps pedals behaving as they should regardless of what is engaged. All True Bypass is the worst possible setup and no professional goes without one.
IMO RATs grind wonderfully and excel for chugging. BOSS drives dominate top end and can be so versatile. Even this DS-2 is a cool tool when used more like an EQ (and also using a footswitch).
DS-2 for this song, RAT for songs with a different distortion flavour.
Yep!!!
Yep, sounds better the ds2
Tte DS-2 is good for a lot of songs. It's they most underrated Boss pedal. It's an A tier Boss pedal.
@@PerryFrank they both sound like shit
"in the general vicinity of bloom"
LMAOOOO
DS2 most underrated pedal of all time!
i still prefer the DS-1, but i have the DS-2 on my board
whata they do differently?

I love my ds1 so much! Gotta try a ds2 and a rat eventually

Good video. But I’d like to praise the clean tone. It sounded so good!
Line selector and both
🔥🔥
Nice clean sound man!!i like ds2
I prefer both, DS-2 in turbo mode two before the RAT with both set to max on gain and volume and tone difference just enough to set it off together.
My wife says - “They both sound the same”.
And she’s always right.
Divorce immediately
@ 🤣 Done.
the DS2 is the sound of the album i guess
DS-2 💯
🔥🔥
Ds2 for sure
Yes.

DS2!
Well, the RAT becomes a fuzz-like pedal When you use the highest distortion knob so it sound bad with this song in particular
