Always enjoy your videos and have learned a lot. I guess what I've used and enjoyed the most was the statement your buddy made " The louder you talk to mules the louder you have to talk to mules ". Gonna try something this spring and might get in trouble. I'm gonna go over to Cades Cove and hook up and see how far I can drive around the loop. 😮

Great explanation for people who do not have the experience with wagons. Back in Bavaria where I am from we almost exclusively had stiff tongues, but then we didn't travel on really rough terrain.
I should have added that with a stiff tongue it is easier for the horses to hold back the wagon downhill without breeching on them , which we usually didn't have, so the horses had to hold back the wagon with the collars, but all our wagons or carriages had brakes@@zachodom7486

Good morning Mr Hershel. So here’s the deal on that; It won’t rub if you have the right type of harness. You need a choke strap type under harness and breast chains to pull a stiff tongue wagon properly. Otherwise, if you have a stiff tongue and martingale under-harness it will rub. Especially if you have them hooked sorta snug. They shouldn’t be hooked snug anyway on a stiff tongue. The idea for the tongue is to be able to move freely when pulling. So when moving forward the tongue chains should be a little loose. When holding a big load back, that’s where the choke strap type under harness and breast chains is KEY. It won’t rub that way. And they can hold a tremendous load. I routinely haul 4 tons with my log wagon…and it’s never been issue. Most people’s wagons are no where near that kind of load. The Tennessee box britchen harness I use with choke strap under harness and breast chains…coupled with a stiff tongue wagon makes that possible. The 4” combination box britchen really helps a bunch on holding and backing a load. Thanks for watching my friend and take care!!

I have always used drop tongue wagons because that is what is common in this part of the country, works for us. I work ground with horses but never logged maybe drag posts or fire wood. Now I mostly wagon ride some parades, probably too old to change. Most all the pictures I see of circus wagons they use stiff tongue wagons there must be a good reason.Most people around my area refer to the D ring harness as The Boston Backer. ??? You have a nice neat yard shows good workmanship and planning. I look forward to your shows!

Good info zach the strap under the breast hooked to the yoke to stop the tongue from getting to high is something I never realized. I'll use that it's helpful 😊

Another great video! My planter walks worse than I’d like. Neck yoke and no stay chains. If it’s tight enough to take the slack out, I can’t keep depth. I’ve thought about running tight breast chains instead, but open to any ideas.
@jacobkennedy112 gotcha. I don’t have much experience with them. I have a John Deere two row. And a walk behind one row Cole planter. It could be a number of things as to why it’s sloppy and wanders. Most times with a breast yoke setup tho if it’s sloppy it’s because the suspension between how tightly they’re hooked is too loose. Not so much how high your breast yoke/straps are. You may need to drop a few more links on your traces to get them tighter suspended. If you don’t know what I’m saying, then watch those harnessing videos I made a while back and I talk about it there. That could be your problem. Try that…also, your harness has to be adjusted for a breast yoke setup too and I also speak of that in that harnessing video. I think it’s the second one…hitching.

Yes you’ll have to have the d rings and put ya a short chain or strap on it to get the suspension right with about anything that uses a breast yoke. That’ll work buddy! Wish you well. A John Deere 299 is a great planter if ya can find a descent one.
