      Autistic people (including Asperger's) show more emotion than most people. Always throwing temper tantrums and arguing/ being defensive over the smallest things. If anything, they're more like Vulcans *before* they repressed their emotions. Drama queens.

      @@whocares_bear Yes, and in one of the Kelvin timeline movies, Sarek tells Spock that emotions run deep within the Vulcan race, so it's not they are simply "without emotions". They just use a particular discipline allowing them to control and, in some cases, even purge their emotions altogether (the latter being referred to as Kolinahr), which I've always thought sounds like a mixture between Stoicism and Zen Buddhism.

    this scene brilliantly depicts the vulcan ability to undertake several tasks simultaneously, with greater precision and efficiency than a human mind could; similar to how Data undertook tasks rapidly using computers. I always thought the show tended to underplay these moments, and also that in many instances they didn't take into account the processing capabilities of these characters.

    • @Erikjust
      @Erikjust 2 года назад +6

      In the two part TNG episode Unification Spock did mention that Data was all that Vulcan´s aspire to be, someone ruled by pure logic without emotions to cloud their judgement.
      The interesting thing here (i think) was that Data remarked that by aspiring to be that, the Vulcan´s discarded what Data had used all of his life up to this point searching for, humanity and feelings.

      But Spock, because of his hybrid brain, was actually smarter than any other Vulcan scientist. This test is kindergarten compared to the riddle of the whale probe. No scientist on Vulcan and no Federation or Vulcan AI could figure out how to answer the probe. Sarek says the probe is baffling. Spock figured it out in two minutes!
      Notice what Sarek said about the whale probe: "We don't understand the question." The same thing Spock said when he was taking the Vulcan test! But Spock did understand the question that Sarek did not understand.
      In the most dazzling display of brain power, Spock's hybrid intellect skipped over the false assumption that the probe was trying to communicate with the highest order species on Earth. He also deduced that the probe needed to be reprocessed to account for the medium of seawater. Spock called it "human arrogance" but Vulcan scientists were making the same mistake.

    As a person WITH Autism AND ADHD, I find myself in a most peculiar position of expressing a sentiment.
    I find that for many like myself, Spock has become something of a source of strength and some, like myself would aspire to be more like Spock or even Vulcans in general.
    In fact I have actively tried to be less human and more Vulcan, with my first step being the supression of emotions and feelings, however as someone online outlined to me, an equal Star Trek fan once said "Vulcan's don't Supress their emotions, they control their emotions, and there is a distinctive difference between supression and control, he added, Humans CANNOT supress gheir emotions, but we CAN control them by better understanding them and acknowledging their importance and existence, in this way, we can be more like Vulcan's by CONTROLLING, not supressing our emotions" At the time, I had a violent human reaction which in honest hindsight was a very illogical move and adding to that, his insight is rather logical.
    BUT back to the main topic, I think why Spock is so relevant to individuals with disabilities like Autism and ADHD and many others as he as a character is not too dissimilar in the way that sometimes Spock finds common things puzzing, but like a scientist, always endeavours to learn more, and I think this form of "curious learning" is truly how most with a intelectual disability tend to learn, by finding out more out of curiousity.
    I would like to share a personal insight to my fellow individuals with Autism and ADHD: Don't contribute to a conversation without ample information to do so, if you cannot contribute to the conversation it is wise, and logical to remain silent, and if asked for a say, just say "I am not able to appropriately contribute the the current topic of the conversation"
    And to all Spock, TOS and Star Trek fans: 🖖🏻Live Long and Prosper.

    • @hagamapama
      @hagamapama Год назад +1

      Indeed. Made moreso by the fact that even for a Vulcan, this is an answerable question. They're supposed to suppress and deny their feelings but they still have them. Spock's reason for balking at this question is cultural, not intellectual. The computer knows THAT too. he's perfectly capable of giving the question an honest answer. He simply refuses to.

      I think they were using it to make fun of how some theorems in math sound like blatant common sense. For example, when people ask me what the Squeeze Theorem is, I tell them "Basically if you have two functions, and there's a third one that's between them, it's always .. between ... the .. two" and try not to look any more like an idiot than I just did.

    • @onespiritheart
      @onespiritheart 8 лет назад +3

      Well, yes, the statement was no doubt chosen for its axiomatic, (and therefore slightly humorous) nature, but am sure that whoever wrote the line into the film was familiar with the book 'A Course in Miracles' which includes that very statement word for word in its introduction. Here is the full introduction to A Course in Miracles:
      This is a course in miracles. It is a required
      course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean
      that you can establish the curriculum. It means only that you can elect
      what you want to take at a given time. The course does not aim at
      teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It
      does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s
      presence, which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is
      fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.
      This course can therefore be summed up very simply in this way:
      Nothing real can be threatened.
      Nothing unreal exists.
      Herein lies the peace of God.
