Hey Wren, this may or may not help the next time you need to make a magazine. Making sure you have plenty of wood to work with, drill the holes before you shape everything. It means you have more wood for the vice to hold onto making everything more stable. Start with a smaller drill bit, you'll end up being more accurate that way anyways, and work your way up to the diameter you want, keeps its more stable as you're taking less material at a time. To cut the shape of the magazine, you can use a small handsaw like a gent's saw and cut across and around first, then cut down along the length of the magazine. The first round of cuts simply makes sure that the second round can't cut deeper than it should. leave about 1 or 2mm when you cut and just pare down with a chisel to the line you laid out. to pare down, hold the chisel bevel up, placing the cutting edge straight onto your line and aiming the chisel up. This is so that you won't go below the line. Strike the chisel with the palm of your hand and the corner will pop off. Using this as a reference, in a stabbing motion with the chisel as flat and parallel to the line as you can get it, start removing material and slow down and into a slicing motion the closer you get to the line. You can now use the flat of the chisel as a register to the line you want to get to. Essentially you're just doing a very big tenon joint.
He also should have been drilling horizontally. The way he was doing it his trigger hand was at the height of his shoulder meaning he had little leverage against it grabbing also making it difficult to stay stable. I would have rotated the secondary handle to have control on two axis.
One of the coolest job changes I've ever seen was a former sniper Graig Jones that became a wildlife photographer... Perfect skillset and yes... His photos are as amazing as you can imagine
Doesnt work great with pine wood 2x4’s which is what i think he was using. Pine is super soft and those generic drill bits he was using looked like those cheap “wood/metal/plastic” bits. They have a tendency to catch on soft wood even with a pilot hole.
General ideas for the v2 build. Make the shoulder mount and the body by yourself. As the only function this needs is giving stability and holding cables you can use ligther materials to lower the overall weight of the rig. additionally if this is done from thinner pieces of metal you will go further away from the rifle look as well. Seeing as the general idea is for this to be used in "active position" for longer ammount of times than when you aim with a rifle, give an extra padding to the shoulder mount to relieve the tension on the arm. Another thing - If you add a rail at the top of the rig, and attach the mount onto it instead of directly into the body you can regulate the position of the camera and how the weight is distributed. One more possible customization - extendable rail under the camera to which you can attach a handle. You coud as such decide if you want the handle close to the body for better stability or extrude it forward to shift the weight distribution and make it easier to hold longer and give you more fluid movement. Plus you could always attach a tripod instead of the handle to it if you'd want to film while lying on the ground for whatever reason :) Under the shoulder mount you could set up space for weights to have an even better capabality of setting up the weight distribution. And one last thing - I have no idea how secure the lock mount is. Seeing that with the strap the camera is hanging I wouldn't exclude the possibilty that with a rapid movement the lock mount could somehow fail. I probably would add some line based secure mechanism that would save the camera from smashing into the ground if the mount lock would ever decide to fail.

Replace the gun magazine with external battery for tactical re...charge. Put a dslr camera dial where thumb can reach, like a fire mode selector in a gun. To balance the handle in the center of mass, consider using P90, Famas or Aug. Shotgun mic as an attachment, like a granade launcher in a rifle (kind in the right so left hand can still pull focus). For an alternative project for longer focal lengths (>300mm), would be useful having a small tripod in the front (as in a sniper rifle).
I'm kinda picturing Jake watching it and at the woodworking fail bits just shaking his head and when Wren say will just 3d print it Jake slowly looking down while taking the hand to his brow with the 'judging old man' vibe. (Love you Wren, but was really amusing the "New technology, wood!" and then little after 'Oh screw it, I'll just 3d print that.') Also, the idea is cool, the design for a final product prob should use some ideas to make sure it don't look as much as a gun. Lovely idea as may be, and blunt as he was Sam wasn't wrong on potential to bad stuff happening with a camera rig that make look you're with a weapon poiting at people XD But then as Niko said on the very start, initially is not something to use in public indeed. @Rex Rodgers Legend has it the elder gods recieved a sacrifice. A singular wheel was cast into the flame. The first of its kind. Crafted of wood, rubber, and metal. The flame roared 12 feet high as it embraced the matter. The wood crackled, the rubber popped and smoked, the steel morphed and folded as its form turned bright red. Out of the glorious, passionate embrace of the flame. A figure emerged from the blackened smoke. One with divine knowledge and unparrelled skill. With their ancient tonge, only one name was uttered. Wood working advice for the project: You are splitting the grain by drilling with it, you should go opposite of the grain to make it stronger and so it will have a smaller chance of splitting. you will want to star with your pilot bit, size of bit between the pilot and final, and then the final. Hold the drill so you are above it (you should be able to look at the back of the drill rather than the drill being above you head. Change the torque on the drill to be lower so instead of possibly splitting the bit will come to a stop. Let me know if there are any other questions.
developement suggestions: shutter button as trigger accessory rail with focus remote foregrip, plus adjustable mount for tele lens (stable run and gun with 70-200)

bullpup? so like, the camera all the way back? wouldn't that technically be on your face (if not clipping into your face)? like, i'm no cyborg, but i don't think i want to interface my face with the camera THAT badly...
I would love to see them take the camera apart and make a 3d body to it. Then they can also add the switches and move around the wires to the trigger and move the LCD screen
I remembered a Soviet cartoon called "Prostokvashino", where once a talking dog was given a photo-gun similar to your snipe-cam in this video. Upd: Also, good job!
As a NRA member and a photographer/videographer, I badly want one. Just need to find a airsoft rifle at a yardsale. And place the camera's remote behind the trigger mount. 👍🏾
Would have been fine if they used the correct type of bit. Looks like a metal bit used in wood. Or it's just really dull. Wood drilling shouldn't require much pressure, even when hand drilling with old auger bits the pressure required is minimal as the drill bites into the wood on its own. And the design of the drill bit means there should be no expanding pressure on the wood.
I did!!!! That’s like literally exactly what I did haha. I started with a tiny pilot hole, then to a slightly larger drill bit, and then the 1/4” bit that ended up breaking the wood. In hindsight I guess I needed just one more in-between bit but at the time I thought I’d done enough. Also, our section of tools sucks. I was using really dull drill bits.
so if you want to make the trigger a shutter button, the airsoft trigger is very neat in the way that it works, once the airsoft trigger is pulled it works as a metal wedge that connects two contacts that connect the battery to a motor, but you could probably find a way to connect it to something else because these contacts can be soldered to anything else and the platform allows for wires to be routed into the stock or the pistol grip or even the handguard depending on model. the only thing you would need is a device that activates the shutter for you, then connect the wires to the trigger and your good to go! now this could get way more complicated if you wanted to use the guns selector switch to change between an auto focus selection or a fire mode. im so exited to see you all do it
Things I would suggest to change on the camera, gun rig: -Add a rubber shoulder pad to the stock for comfort -Perhaps add hot shoe mounts to the receiver of the rifle for adding light rigs, audio rigs, etc. -Change the sling for one that is perhaps padded and mounts a little better the gun (I'm not sure how well those clips will hold up over time) -Polish the whole thing up so it looks pretty (optional)
To further make it a bit less suspicious looking, you can always paint the whole body in bright orange; you could probably even go so far as to put a side panel on each side that boldly says, “PROP,” or, “NOT A GUN,” or something. Depending on the camera body, if they have an adjustable touchscreen, you could adjust the screen up and/or more towards the chest to reduce neck strain. If you don’t move forward with utilizing the trigger, it may be better to remove it and shave off the trigger guard, which (I think) would further move the shape away from what people might quickly assume is a firearm, both in appearance and how the hand looks while holding it.
That’s exactly what I did... I had two holes previously drilled before attempting the 1/4” bit. Apparently that wasn’t enough and I needed a third. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hey Wren! I had an idea what kind of build project you could do next! How about upgrading your bb weapons, so they actually have knock-back. Arduino + Solenoid = realistic (enough) knock-back! Niko might be interested too. It could even be a detachable add-on that fits for all of your weapons. Maybe it actually improves your future shoots even further! Love your great work! Keep on doing it!
I don't know if it helps at all, but most underwater surf housings (SPL comes to mind) have a pistol grip with a shutter trigger. It may not be what you're looking for but it could be a good design queue if you decide to model your own.

Fun Drinking Game:
Everybody takes one shot every time Wren's Engineering Degree fails him.
Wren: "Look what I discovered!"
Also Wren: Field strips the weapon.
When Wren nearly pulled a Linus - my heart legit skipped a beat lmao
I think using a bullpup design, like an AUG would take care of getting the weight over the grip!
bullpup? so like, the camera all the way back? wouldn't that technically be on your face (if not clipping into your face)? like, i'm no cyborg, but i don't think i want to interface my face with the camera THAT badly...
Wren trying to blow sawdust off of the part with his mask on at 6:50 is probably the most relatable part of the whole video.
"Thank you for giving me an opportunity to utilize my engineering degree" - wren 2020
"...little, like, silvery thing on the inside.."
Wren: wood will give me the strength I need!
Literally 5 seconds later: breaks twice
I would love to see them take the camera apart and make a 3d body to it. Then they can also add the switches and move around the wires to the trigger and move the LCD screen
Also make the safety switch on the gun body do different things with the camera mode
When Wren almost dropped the camera my heart stopped for a sec
Same
I screamed :O
same here, considering that the plastic alone costs more than my life
I remembered a Soviet cartoon called "Prostokvashino", where once a talking dog was given a photo-gun similar to your snipe-cam in this video.
Upd: Also, good job!
@Mot Goaiu Oh, f u, spammer!
That's actually a thing.
Yeeeees came here to look for this comment! :D
11:38 my heart STOPED
I imagine Black Rifle Coffee would be interested in a mount like that
As a NRA member and a photographer/videographer, I badly want one.
Just need to find a airsoft rifle at a yardsale. And place the camera's remote behind the trigger mount. 👍🏾
They might consider it poor trigger discipline, 😉👉💥
11:42 my heart stopped
+1 damn scary
Props to niko for good trigger discipline even with a fake gun 👌
You should have pre drilled the hole with a smaller drill bit.
I Think its called pilot drilling
Just came in here to say that lol
Would have been fine if they used the correct type of bit. Looks like a metal bit used in wood. Or it's just really dull. Wood drilling shouldn't require much pressure, even when hand drilling with old auger bits the pressure required is minimal as the drill bites into the wood on its own. And the design of the drill bit means there should be no expanding pressure on the wood.
Pretty sure he had a pilot didn't he?
How did it take more than a century for an American filmmaker to come up with a camera rig like this?
The Soviet Union had this for taking photos quite a while before
They were sold for years in the photo world back in the 60s and 70s
Leica had a rig like this as well. Check their insta

I came up with this in 6th grade. The difference is these weird dudes have access to broken airsoft guns and a 3d printer.
I literally jumped from my seat when I saw that camera drop. My heart dropped out my ass
Jake: “ohh that’s fine” killed me for some reason 😂

"Stuff", "Thing", can confirm is actual engineering nomenclature
As an Engineer myself, can confirm
so if you want to make the trigger a shutter button, the airsoft trigger is very neat in the way that it works, once the airsoft trigger is pulled it works as a metal wedge that connects two contacts that connect the battery to a motor, but you could probably find a way to connect it to something else because these contacts can be soldered to anything else and the platform allows for wires to be routed into the stock or the pistol grip or even the handguard depending on model. the only thing you would need is a device that activates the shutter for you, then connect the wires to the trigger and your good to go! now this could get way more complicated if you wanted to use the guns selector switch to change between an auto focus selection or a fire mode. im so exited to see you all do it
Next an actual Shotgun Mic
How will you hold it up you ask?
“This is my boomstick.”

@@FrostedMike yes, TACTICOOL reload it
Things I would suggest to change on the camera, gun rig:
-Add a rubber shoulder pad to the stock for comfort
-Perhaps add hot shoe mounts to the receiver of the rifle for adding light rigs, audio rigs, etc.
-Change the sling for one that is perhaps padded and mounts a little better the gun (I'm not sure how well those clips will hold up over time)
-Polish the whole thing up so it looks pretty (optional)
And I was thinking, “dang a real ar-15 is easier to disassemble than the air soft gun”.
My heart actually drop as Wren almost spilled that camera.
"Wrengineering" is somehow more dodgy than actual tradies cutting corners
I want to see this used with the guys at Black Rifle Coffee. "When Veterans go Birding".

HohhMYGAHR! I actually felt as if my soul was about to leave my body at 11:40
In my russian picture books as a kid there was a wolf who would carry around a camera attatched to a wooden rifle grip.
It was a dog named Sharik (Baloon) from cartoon “Prostokvashino”
Yeah, google "фотоохота простоквашино" for pictures.
It was based (I believe) on the soviet made Zenit FS-12, which was mostly used for wildlife photography with high zoom lens.
childhood memories
Best part of the whole video is the proper trigger control throughout the whole thing.

Drill your holes before you shave it down to size. More structural integrity while you drill. Less likely to crack
That’s exactly what I did... I had two holes previously drilled before attempting the 1/4” bit. Apparently that wasn’t enough and I needed a third. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Trigger activates a flash, would be great.
@Ba Doai yesoh indeed.
Niko: The goods...
Me: Oh god this is gonna be a plug isnt it
“Ready, aim, fire!” The camera clicks.

@@TitansSoul Wowowow Wow!
add picatinny rails for more modularity like a that grip wren was talking about
Keep on doing it!
i think the weight of the camera can be moved more toward the grip by using a bullpup rifle as a frame
also: drill the holes first then shape the piece.
I don't know if it helps at all, but most underwater surf housings (SPL comes to mind) have a pistol grip with a shutter trigger. It may not be what you're looking for but it could be a good design queue if you decide to model your own.
Wren: *happy with his build*
Sam: I'm gonna destroy this man's feelings
I mean.... he is not tottaly wrong, even thro the brutal honestity? XD
Petition to change it to “Wrengineered” instead of “Wren-Engineered”
