Great combination of entertainment (very funny intro), along with education - clearly and accessibly explained while still including the specifics and scientific details (HR/lactate). Fantastic balance of very serious training while having fun and not taking yourself too seriously!
Thank you so much for this comment. I really appreciate that. It’s a hard balance but that’s what I was trying to do. Be useful but with some entertainment value too. It means a lot that your feedback is so positive. Thank you for taking the time to comment. It’s one of my favourite videos too so I’m glad it’s going down well.
Twice per day running has been proven to increase mitochondrial efficiency. This is true even when compared to training in a glycogen depleted state once per day. So there is something special about twice a day training. Thanks for this video.
Hi Matt - very nice video. I use the lactate pro 2 and have taken (it seems like) hundreds of samples and technique is key. Ear lobe sampling is much better (a small mirror is needed if doing it yourself). If sampling from finger, use index, middle or ring finger, over the mid to outer aspect. Key issue is skin/hand temperature - in cold weather circulation is relatively poor and readings will be high. Unless it’s a fairly warm day, as a minimum you need to wear gloves. Indoors, if you have a fan/door open to the garage, skin surface can be surprisingly cool and again sampling not very reliable. Also - when you stab yourself, wipe away the first bleed with tissue, allow further small bleed then apply the monitor stick. I also tend to avoid arm/hand with watch/heart rate monitor attached just in case it is slightly tight and slows venous return. Main advice - Ear lobe works best. Hope that helps.
Thank you so much for this amazing and detailed reply. I will take all of that great advice on board. Kelly said someone might comment and help with the lactate reading issue but I wasn’t expecting such a useful reply so I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Glad you enjoyed the video and I’ll keep you updated with any success with the lactate meter in future vlogs. Cheers.

That's a nice lake loop mate! Surprised there was only one other 'runner' 😏 Would relish an interval workout around that nice backdrop. Funny video especially your girl's laughter! 😄 'double threshold' is just a glorified term for two hard training sessions😆 love the UK, hit up Bristol and Cardiff a few years ago, just right ;-)
i’ve got a lactate pro 2 and also did sports science at uni so have had a bit of experince with it and i think its surprising how slow you have to go to keep the lactate under threshold. I think looking at how the heart rate was creeping up in your reps you were probably over lacate threshold. Also i would suggst doing a ramp test to really define your lactate turn point as this could be higher than 4, for example mine is aroud 5mmol.
Thanks Joe. I do agree that you have to go slower than you expect but this was very comfortable running for me. I have had testing under lab conditions and my turnpoint is 181bpm and around 4. These were all considerably lower HR than that. My HR came down in the final rep. I’m confident that this was under threshold especially if you take a look at my other recent activities. Of course I’m talking turnpoint as I’m aware that in academia lactate threshold can refer to what I would commonly refer to as aerobic threshold. I’d love to get retested in a lab when lockdown ends. Thanks for your comment. I love discussing this stuff.
@@TheWelshRunner was the lab done on a treadmill? Not sure if you used disinfectant wipes but when I do it I wipe my finger, prick my finger and then wipe it again, squeeze the blood and get the sample. This seems to work really well. also try a ramp rest around the lake, would make for a good video if nothing else. maybe start at 7mpm and run a lap 15 seconds a mile faster and take lactate after each loop. Ideally 2-4 minutes of running between each sample.

Fantastic video, with some practical insight. As a vet runner this really appeals as tendency for injury from over training is high. Not expecting super gains at my age but definitely will be trying to adapt some of this into my training. Thanks again for detailed video.
What an awesome video Matt, love the insight on their training and showing us yourself too. It just goes to show how far but how careful elite athletes have to be, trying to push themselves to the exact limit but no further. Would be nice to have time for an afternoon nap every day wouldn't it!
Glad you enjoyed it Thomas. Yes they train so hard but in such a measured way. It definitely isn't a case of 'go as hard as you can', but rather do a lot of fairly hard running. I love sleep. A nap every day would be 'dreamy'.
Enjoyed the video and insight into how and what the experts do. So thanks for taking the time to create and publish. One thing I would add, perhaps for consideration for future subject matter, is the subject of rest and recovery. As runners we tend to seek out that killer workout which is going to take us to the next level but neglect what we should be doing on easy/recovery days. There are plenty of vlogs out there indicating how fast to do this or how many reps at x pace. In this video clearly there is total focus on how they should perform when undertaking the intense sessions, so I’m guessing equal discipline is applied to rest and recovery/easy runs. I think it would helpful therefore, to understand this aspect more, particularly how do their easy runs relate, in terms of pace/hr/distance to the faster activities. Indeed gaining an insight into how you perform these sessions would also be of interest.
The Anger Briston's (how they'll henceforth be known) training is very reminiscent of Chris Boardman's, clever & very methodical. I remember seeing a doc about the hour record where he talks about finger pricking after intervals being the best way to measure lactate but too much of a pain! It's worth remembering they are all middle distance runners and while they're very good at cross country, not that unusual at 8 to 10km XC for good milers, I think they'd have to strip back those recoveries and bump up the long runs to excel at 10km and above. You can bet your bottom dollar Joshua cheptegei ain't stopping after 80mins of a long run.
Rachel Warren said it all in her comment, excellent video, fun interesting & educational, can’t wait to see you smash a new Pb half & full marathon, 👊🏼🌳🍀🌴☘️🌲👍😀
I am a data nerd, loved the video you just went to a new level with those lactate measurements. No idea how some ppl dont use hr strap when its a really cheap option to track your training efforts.
Thanks Sandor. Glad you enjoyed. I agree a chest strap is a great tool and affordable too. I’ll try and get the readings to be more accurate with the lactate monitor next time as I think it could give some interesting insights. 👍
Thanks. They are so good to watch race. I really hope the Olympics can go ahead this year because I would love to see them race, as with many other amazing athletes.
Brilliant video! The intro really cracked me up and if other viewers laughed as much as I did, then growing the tache was totally worth it! Will you be shaving it off now? I got the impression that Kelly rather liked it!! The rest of the video was really informative and enjoyable. I can't imagine doing doubles yet let alone double workouts, but it's good to know the levels of training you can aim for as long as it's built up to gradually and planned carefully and strategically. You really clearly explained the logic of the workouts as part of an overall plan as well as emphasising the importance of control and not overcooking it. Fantastic stuff!

These vids are getting better and better, Matt. Really great stuff. I’m also just jealous your body can actually do this whereas if I try one threshold session my body turns to flubber 😂
Thanks mate. I am really glad you liked the video. I don't recommend double threshold days to most people but if you get the intensity right one session should not feel too taxing, especially when you build up the volume and break up the work. Also if I remember correctly flubber had more bounce than Zoomx foam; the next supershoe?
That was brilliant, subscribed!! I think you could do a follow up on threshold training, would be really interested to see it. Cheers, all the best for Wrexham

Yes 20-25x400m is another of their threshold sessions which they use. I look forward to seeing your video. I agree. One day is tough. Twice a week, every week is crazy, but you have to be a bit crazy to be the best.
Very interesting training. The 3 minute pieces seem like CV pace Tinman elite do. I've always found workouts at just faster than LT or LT really works. Probably a lot less chance of getting hurt.
Thanks I am glad you enjoyed. 🤣 Fun fact for you I’ve actually been on Gogglebox. Not on a sofa watching but as one of the clips they were watching as part of the London Marathon coverage. I was out having a beer at the time and got a text saying that they were talking about me on gogglebox 🤷🏻♂️🤣. I’ll have to see if I can dig out the clip and include it briefly in a vlog without copyright restrictions.
Great question. Sorry I didn’t cover this as the video was Ingebrigtsen specific. I averaged about 390W on each 6 minutes and my CP is 400W. My CP is a little dated at the moment though as haven’t really done any hard efforts to see if it’s increased, but it’s there or thereabouts.
Really enjoyed this video, it's very interesting. Although only at small levels, when we did the aerobic work towards end of last year combined with sub threshold work, I felt so good and fit & really enjoyed training. Geoff says he dares me to ask for a double threshold day - not happening! 🤣 The hill training is intriguing, what do you see the reason as for the way the brothers doing it in the they do?
Thanks Moneil. Good that you enjoyed the video. Yes I think sub-threshold and anaerobic threshold work is excellent for progressing athletes without the extra stress of VO2max work. It certainly gets results when used at the right times. The hills ensure they are still working at faster paces, but without the stress of running very fast on the flat. It will make them powerful and help with their economy. It will provide many benefits, making them fitter, and prepared to run fast when the track season comes round.
I was so bad at Labs. Lucky I was decent at exams and coursework because Labs nearly destroyed me 🤣🙈. Organic was the worst. My yield would be awful and often spec would show I’d made the wrong thing 🤣🤷🏻♂️. The monitor is meant to be amazing. See one of the comments below as it gives some useful info to improve my technique. Hopefully I can get it giving me better readings.
Hi Matt love your channel and it’s helping me so much with my running. Do you ever get sore hips the last week my hips have started hurting when I run and it’s effecting my runs. Thanks
Usually is difficult to monitoring our effort with a lactometer in the middle of a hard workout this is better to know our evolution trhough a marathon complete cicle of train, two threshold workout in the same day is very hard for most people i try to run in one week 😁
I agree. I wouldn't plan on using a lactate meter for every session. It is a great tool for measuring threshold zones and then checking these zones again after a period of training.
Mate how would you compare the Lactate pro2 to the Edge device? And any thoughts on the Lactate Scout 4 or Lactate Plus? Off course The Edge is much cheaper but it also comes with a 5yr warranty compared to the Lactate Pro2 which only has a 1 year warranty...... Cheers
Good effort... one thing. I think you are doing the recovery of those 6' reps too short. They are more resting 2' between reps. Check Goran Wimblad's video (swedish guy living in Norway). I have also read their second sesh of the day can also be 20x400 (30" off) at around their 8k effort.
Yes they have a few sessions they rotate. The 20x400 off 30s short recoveries is one I also want to try. I love Goran’s video and linked to it in my description. However, I believe the recoveries to be 1 minute and not 2 minutes but I have seen no definitive answers in the research papers. Are you familiar with Kalle Berglund the Swedish 1500m runner? He also follows this training schedule now and he did a presentation stating the recoveries should be 1 minute for the 6 minute efforts. Google the presentation as it’s really interesting.
Did 5x6:00 in am at about 3:31 per km, and 8x1k in pm at about 3:24km. Neither took too much out of me. Great sessions. How much does lactate kit cost?
As a more intermediate runner would you recommend 4 x 4. So 4min threshold and 3min recovery. Are these still an effective way to improve say twice a week? Thanks
The Reason why they do so much threshold pace is, that they have already a "perfect" VO2max so they don´t need to work on that. They just want to be more efficient at threshold pace.
So Matt if i train at threshhold 8x6 mins - is that 80 % of my top speed or what is t ?i don t really understand. Any way you are a beast you up there with the elites
Thanks for the heads up. They are all working my end. Are you based in the UK? It may be that they are not working internationally. I am not sure. Try searching Leif Inge Tjelta on Researchgate.net. Hope that helps. 👍

Was that heart rate monitor the Garmin HRM-Run? If it was, how is it? I'm debating whether it not I should buy it (I don't have a heart rate monitor yet).
Yes I have a few. I think my favourite is the Garmin HRM Run. The Pro is even better but I don't have that one, nor do I really need the extras. this one is fantastic and you won't regret getting it. I would go as far as to urge you to get it.
Maybe my moustache was my disguise. They don't monitor it all that stringently but they are trusting us to follow the guidelines as a collective effort to help bring down the covid cases.
Talk about bamboozling your audience. Most of your subs don’t even own a HR monitor. Remember most people follow you because you helped a guy finish a race not because they want to know what your lactate level . Keep it simple .
If you don’t like the videos you are free to not watch them. I’m making a video on how the Ingebrigtsens train. So why would I omit HR when they use that religiously. If it’s too confusing or complicated for you then that’s fine. There’s plenty of other videos or books you can start with.

I’ll have to see if I can dig out the clip and include it briefly in a vlog without copyright restrictions.
@@TheWelshRunner oh that’s brilliant!! Fingers crossed 🤞🏼
Great video Matt. Subscribed! Curious to know what your Watts and % of CP were during the first session around the lake. Keep up the good work.
Great video with very informative content, thanks! One question, where did you buy that lactate meter?
Your mention of chemistry labs brought back some bad memories lol. I'm interested in the lactate monitor but you didn't really sell it. Thoughts?
I was so bad at Labs. Lucky I was decent at exams and coursework because Labs nearly destroyed me 🤣🙈. Organic was the worst. My yield would be awful and often spec would show I’d made the wrong thing 🤣🤷🏻♂️.
The monitor is meant to be amazing. See one of the comments below as it gives some useful info to improve my technique. Hopefully I can get it giving me better readings.
Quality video mate. Are these lactate testers worth it for the amateur runner, they very expensive!!
Great vid!!
Thanks 👍
Cheers
In which zone are they doing their hill repeats? In treshold? Nice Video!
Great video
Cheers 👍👊
Did 5x6:00 in am at about 3:31 per km, and 8x1k in pm at about 3:24km. Neither took too much out of me. Great sessions. How much does lactate kit cost?
Bloody legend I tells ya! 😂 It's a great look for you to be fair!
As a more intermediate runner would you recommend 4 x 4. So 4min threshold and 3min recovery. Are these still an effective way to improve say twice a week? Thanks
So cool. Is recovery jogging or standing
Great content “I’ll show her”🤣
That look your wife has cutting your hair is the exact same devious look my wife has when cutting mine.
Kelly enjoys it too much 😂. I think she did a decent job though; I must've been in the good books.
Having high values even at rest, maybe a device issue... Did your device measure correctly after?
Nice! What’s your HR training zones? Curious because we both seem to have high training HR.
Depends what model you use? Last time I was tested my aerobic threshold was 161bpm (83% of max) and anaerobic threshold 181bpm (93% of max).
Half way in, I have heard you mention "control the effort" 6 times!!!
The point needs to be hammered home. I still bet most people who do this session will go too hard.
Where did you watch the episodes with subs? I can only find season 1 and a few more of each season, but not all of them
How long are you supposed to be able to hold threshold for?? Is it like half marathon pacing or shorter??
Matt can you have a look at some of the links you added. They aren't working.
Thanks for the heads up. They are all working my end. Are you based in the UK? It may be that they are not working internationally. I am not sure. Try searching Leif Inge Tjelta on Researchgate.net. Hope that helps. 👍
@@TheWelshRunner Matt, very much UK based, not withstanding the irridentist tendencies in parts of London and the South East. Interestingly some of the links that went nowhere are now working, but the links to your excellent you tube series are not working out at my end- one says can't open link and the other says link unavailable. Also the link to your page says page not abvailable although I found the coaching pages through other routes.
I must sound like a real pedant, but I'm not. Devoted watcher of your channel. I've filled in details in the hope that you might be able to coach. Fingers crossed at this end.
2:01. Henrick, is that you?😂
Was that heart rate monitor the Garmin HRM-Run? If it was, how is it? I'm debating whether it not I should buy it (I don't have a heart rate monitor yet).
Yes I have a few. I think my favourite is the Garmin HRM Run. The Pro is even better but I don't have that one, nor do I really need the extras. this one is fantastic and you won't regret getting it. I would go as far as to urge you to get it.
@@TheWelshRunner thanks mate, just ordered it. One of my favourite videos of yours this one! 👏🏻
Are you wiping away the first bit of blood? It's important to do this
Yeah its important
Should have seen this before, just use about 20 stripes and get random values... Will try again tomorow thanks
What watch you are wearing
😂😂😂😂 you now have the mustache, just add a litle more speed! 😄
That's the goal 👊👍
pretty nutty that they "monitor" you close enough to know if you've gone out for two workouts in a day... i would wear a disguise lol
Maybe my moustache was my disguise. They don't monitor it all that stringently but they are trusting us to follow the guidelines as a collective effort to help bring down the covid cases.
21km/h threshold 😲
The glasses 🤣
Harry is super 😍cute
🤣🤣🤣 love the intro
Thanks 👍.
1st and looks like u did 6 accidentally 😂
I like to go the extra mile 🤣
We have far better 5k runners who are in the UK.
@@TheWelshRunner what a brilliant reply . Thank you
