Update 4/22/19: These tires have 1,500 miles on them now. Still holding up fair, but rear knob height is about 25% and the front about 50%. NO TORN KNOBS ON THE REAR! Front has side knobs tearing, but none have come off. This is the longest I've ever run tires in my entire life. They're not to my performance standards anymore, so I'll be changing them before next weekend's ride, but VERY happy overall with durability of these tires! See the links in the descriptions for the EXCELLENT PRICE Metzler sells there for. 👌
Cool man, thanks, very helpful review. I take a lot of roads to get to the dirt so this seems to be my salvation also my wr450 is a little to much for some tires.
I just mounted a set of these on my 690. I've only taken a quick ride around the block and they're pretty wiggly on the road....I don't care though, I just need to be able to get to the dirt and it's only 10 miles from me. I tried a couple power slides in some side of the road gravel/dirt and I was impressed. I think I'm going to like these.
Almost all real knobbies will wander around like that. Especially compared to something like a TKC80 or something that might have come stock. The front tire I currently have is the best real knobby I've ever run on the Road. Built for Dakar, so kind of makes sense 🤷♂️😆
I imagine it would still be pretty good, at least the rear anyway, it’s a pretty open lug design. Closest thing I’ve ridden to mud and sand with it is cinder and wet peat.
Great information, I have the rear MC360 on my 16 SXF 350 as a training tire. The track I ride at mainly is hard pack and often blue groove. This tire is nearly indestructible! Drawback is less grip and a much harder side wall than the Dunlop MX 52s I run for races. But it lasts forever! Considering this tire for my 690 when the time comes.
I was really pretty happy with it. I switch my 350EXC to Dunlop 952s (budget tires) which are doing surprisingly well, but I'll switch back to Metzlers when it comes time for my DOT inspection. My 690 is mostly on the road now. Still considering putting some back on it. Outside of the reduced braking, they were more predicable in corners than others I ran. Likely the stiffer sidewall. Side note: Both my bikes are 18" rear wheels (unlike your SX 19"). I struggled with the wallowy feel of the 18" tire sidewalls. Probably why I liked the Metzler so much. I tried a 90/100 and a 130/80 tires on my 350 and hated the way it rode for the speeds I mostly ride it. Riding a 80/100 and 120/100 on my 350 right now. Probably go to the 110 on the rear. Worked perfect for 10 years on my similarly powered 250 smokers, no reason it shouldn't now.
RJ Babcock - Makes me a bit sad reading this.... I stocked up on 52's and will run out before too long. Have you found any other alternatives to the 52 ? I can't seem to gel with the 53. Less versatile and seems to wear twice as quick.
Damn you need to be rich to ride dirt bikes in Hawaii! I actually bought a dual sport 350 from a GI and even though it was so cheap for a low milage bike less than 2 years old? It literally was totalled as far as returning it to nice reliable shape....that state just EATS motorcycles! Heck just the red clay or whatever you call it bonds itself to metals and is insanely difficult to clean off,,,,you have to love working on a bike to ride there if you ask me LOL....hats off to you though you keep your bikes nice looking!
You don't have to be rich if you don't buy groceries 🤣 That red dirt is so fine in finds it way into everything and stains everything. That's not much of a thing here. On this island it's the volcanic rock (ie.. cheese graders) that kill everything. Kills tires instantly and looks like a disc grinder hit your bike even if you dump it over. Full transparency... I do not particularly enjoy riding here (I enjoy riding) but it's what I have 🤷♂️ It could be world class riding here (perfect year round weather and various terrains) but nobody will let it happen 😞
Have you tried also the MC360 Mid soft on your 690 Enduro. I'm not sure if I should go for the mid hard or the mid soft in mixed off-road terrain and asphalt. Which would your recommend?
I haven’t. All I can tell you is that in general, hard terrain or desert tires hold up much better on the big 690. Rocky + 690 = evaporated tires, but if you have lots of mud and soft sand and not a lot of terrain that likes to chunk knobs, the soft tires could help a bunch.
Running this rear tire on my XR650L. I have a little over 700 miles on them so far and they are holding up great, lots of pavement too. I think it will easily get 700-1000 more. Loud on pavement for sure but you can't beat a knobby in the dirt. And you can get them for under $80. I'm going to try their Mid-Soft as well.
I'm finishing off my 4th or 5th set. This time on my 250EXC-F. I still like them and they're still a good price. Almost grabbed another set 2 weeks ago. I like trying different stuff, but these are def a pretty easy "Go to" tire choice for me.
I have just picked up a 2019 KTM 690 and I am swapping the Mitas E07 for a set of the Metzler Mid-hard. You mention you are running as low as 8 PSI in your tyres? I am assuming you have rim locks?? I am wondering what a safe pressure limit would be without rim locks with these tyres. Great review, thankyou 👍
Tori's Trails yes, running rim locks. Double on the front single on the rear currently. Tires slip more the more aggressively you ride. I spin the rear wheel and brake really late. Probably why macaroni dual sport tires haven't worked for me. The 690 has a lot of power and a lot of mass to slow. I feel like anything lower than maybe 16 you're going to get wheel slip. Seem to remember I did at like 20-22 with my stock MT21s. Highly recommend you get rim locks. Worth the $20 when you rip a valve stem and go flat. Plus they allow you to ride a flat (slowly).
Haven't ridden it in the mud. None of that in my neck of the woods. If you ride that, get the Mid-Soft. In general hard terrain tires have closer knobs and more durable compounds. Soft tires more open and taller knobs for biting through soft stuff.
So how wide is it in real world? I've never ran anything other then the 140/80/18 metzler sixdays but really want to try out the 120/100/18 mc360. I just dont want it to be to skinny or much skinnier then the 140? Any way you can measure yours?
It’s wide enough. It’s a full knob, so don’t expect amazing street performance (mostly lost braking performance). I can’t imagine it won’t hold up better than the Six Days. My unmounted carcass smashed in my dead tire pile measurers 5” knob to knob. Metzler lists that they make a 140, but I’ve never found a distributor that has it.
Both. On lighter bikes the harder compound sacrifices a bit, but the 690’s weight seemed to push them into the ground. Wears really well. Between my close friends and I, we’ve run 6? of them on 250F, 350F, 450F & 690 bikes.
@@JohnHowerton137 Thanks, I'm always on a quest for a long lasting desert tire. So far the maxis desert IT is the longest lasting but now they are over 100 bucks. I just ordered the mc360 110 for my 250f, we will see how it goes.
NVMCRIDER took mine off the 690 (tire destroyer) at 650 miles I think. It’s at 1,100 now on my 350. You can see in the other videos the rocky stuff I ride in. Only one knob has a cut it it. Other than the knobs being shorter, it looks great.
@@JohnHowerton137 It should be here soon, but I need to finish burning off the Maxxis before I get it mounted. Tires here in Nevada could stand to be replaced every three hundred miles and are totally gone at 600.
NVMCRIDER get any rides on it yet? I'm retiring mine this week, but you can see in my last video they were still rideable. Be right at 1,600 MILES! When I take them off.
Hell of a deal. Enjoy! You'll probably love them. The stiff carcass is great. I put a fresh set on my buddy's 450 Six days last week and rode them on Sunday. Great tires, liked them better than the combo I have right now. Try 8-10Lbs. That's seems to be where I always end up running them. Just mounted up a Dunlop 952 120/80 (not DOT) 10 mins ago to pair with my 90/100 Washougal II front. We'll get so see how those perform this weekend. They're both inexpensive as well. The Washougal handled best around 13lbs (to the 360's 10lbs) and I suspect the 952 will be around 11-13 too. I've ridden the Kenda ibex gummy stuff recently too. Not sure I'm a fan. The rear was toast in no time and I think the street will kill the front pretty fast as well.
@@leonardospina7693 going to tip my hat to the Metzler. Maybe even the front too. I like tires that are predictable and I never felt surprised with the Metzlers. Still seems like they were damn good tires for the money and wear really well.
davidofqwerty road legal has nothing to do with the way they perform on the street, it simply means they can be used on the street legally. Now that there's only about 40% knob remaining, they're actually working half decent on the street 🤣
