One thing many people forget regarding missiles is that medium to long range air to air missiles often have a glide approach. They dont have the fuel capacity to burn the entire flight time, so they accelerate fast for a few seconds and then glide to the target. Turning hard to chase after a turning aircraft slows them down a lot, its called "bleeding energy". After multiple turns a missile might be too slow to follow the aircraft.
This is also why missiles are almost never fired at maximum range, specifically against maneuverable targets such as fighters.
Most ground based missile systems use solid rocket fuel boosters, think of new year fireworks but a different propellant type. Missiles fly on a semi-ballistic arc towards a target with some degree of maneuverability allowing change of direction towards the target. If the missile misses the target it will just continue going in that direction until the self-destruct timer runs out.
New missiles have second stage boosters that turn on when approaching the target to regain speed.

I may be wrong about the exact details, I’m sure someone who knows can correct me, but a quick search with the info above will confirm.

Jinking is to defend against gunfire, short turns "out of plane". Missile defence is A LOT more complicated and you typically dont want to bleed your energy with violent jinking manouvers. Instead you make sure to bleed the missile's energy by putting it on your beam (right/left wingtip) and then turn to put the missle on your other beam thereby maximizing the missile's energy bleed. But that's not jinking.
I warmly recomment Growling Sidewinder's channel for anything air combat related. He explains it so well.

This. Jinking a Fox 3 means you're bleeding your own energy and making it easy for the missile to close in and kill you.
The best way to evade a missile outside of countermeasures (chaff + flares) is by going low to dense air & running away from it (or "going cold").

Just a slight correction on the animation. Flares don’t just pop out and cause the missile to change direction. Flares basically create a shield of targets for the missile but the missile goes through them so if you don’t change direction after launching them, the missile will likely still hit you
That's why you turn after using the flare
That and most modern missiles will ignore flares

@@dutchdragon2472 I was in a factory that made 'spectral flares' for the military. Spectral flares can fool modern heat seeking missiles. How we were taught was that modern heat seekers are clever. They go for temperatures that are exactly the temperatures of the trusters and a range or spectrum of temperatures to the cockpit. They also go for the object going the same direction and velocity of what they were fired at. Spectral flares burn at an uneven temperature with one end burning at the heat of the thrusters and the other at the temperature of the cockpit. They also decend gradually and at a similar velocity to the aircraft. The pilot has to pull up sharply letting the flare trick the missile.

We all know Behind Enemy Lines is Hollywood's version of combat ace. Trying to evade a defense missiles attack takes just under 90 seconds to down an aircraft and you cannot go head to head with an incoming missile.
I am sorry, but there is so much wrong information in this video. Jinking is a defensive manouver against gun shots. Jinking with a missile on your tail will almost certainly get you killed, unless you are playing Ace Combat.
Modern/advanced missiles are (most likely) capable to out maneuver most (probably) any aircraft. They cannot predict an escape maneuver, but their algorithms think in terms of envelops and probabilities, and will ignore even flares in certain situations. Very long range missile shots and electronic countermeasures are increasingly pilots’ best options.
yeah exactly. modern missiles can easily pull 30+ g's so manuvering isnt what gets them to miss you most of the time. if the missile is at max speed and you perfectly time your manuver then yeah its possible that the missiles turn radius will be too large and just barely miss but literally everything has to go right for that to happen. from what ive gathered (not a fighter pilot just some person who likes planes im not a credible source) the best way to defeat a missile is to, as you said, be able to shoot at longer range then the enemy and to use jamming. apprently chaff also barely does shit unless your perfectly in the notch so in general i think they jsut use jamming and smooth turns (to minimise energy loss of the aircraft) to bleed energy from the missile.
Jinking is a BVR concept. The real reason it works is because when the missile is moving to intercept the fighter the rocket motor is usually already out, so turning pulls the missile to glide a different direction, which bleeds energy.
from what i understand jinking really isnt used in bvr. its a sudden change in direction used to dogfight to escape bullets. in bvr jinking will get you killed cuz it bleeds your energy a lot while barely making the missile readjust course at all. for bvr youd wanna crank or notch. basically just stay fast and do very smooth turns. if your doing mach 1 (im gonna exagerate here a little) and turn 15 degrees the missile will have to turn way more then if your going 200 knots and turn 80 degrees. (not a figther pilot this is all just information ive heard from interviews or simulators so dont take this as facts and please correct me if im wrong)

Flairs work against heat seekers, Maneuvers work against sams because sams dont turn and chase, the predict and explode where they think youre going to be, and stealth defeats radar guided. There are other systems but those typically require visual range and have their own drawbacks. These days, over the horizon long range missiles fired by stealth planes is the most effective and safe method of engaging enemy aircraft

When a fox-3 or radar homing self guided missile (aamram/meteor) is thought to have been launched, a pilot will actually perform a notch maneuver, dumping altitude forcing the incoming missile into denser air where it is less maneuverable. Chaff can also be deployed. The sharp maneuver ad deploying if flares is usually performed in a dog fight where fox-3 short range all aspect or heat seeking missiles like the AIM-9X are deployed

That’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works.
Jinking is a gun defense. It’s used to make a short range ballistic firing solution more difficult. Missiles are defeated in an energetic contest, not by trying to turn so fast you startle a homing radar.
Jinking is against gunfire, missle defense is done by banking away from them and using chaff/flares

I think what he was trying to say is that if you chaff and then pull up quick enough the chaff will probably be moving faster than your jets and so will have a greater doppler shift, in such a case the radar missile might eat the chaff like old IR missiles ate flares

When jets have autonomous wingmen protecting them from behind, they won’t only have one or two extra vehicles behind them to defeat the threat, or at the very least, take the threat instead of the manned jet, but all the visual and sensor data those drones pick up can be fed directly into the pilot hud. They would wear helmets like the f35 and literally be able to see every single thing around them 360 degrees, with the ability to zoom in and change spectrums. They could even use a brain machine interface or eeg type technology to control features like that with your mind instead of buttons.

You have basically three ways to defeat a missile :
1 you bleed its energy until it can't catch you
2 you manœuver to make it overcorrect until it lose you or can't pull a sharp enough turn to hit you
3 you confuse the seeker with either physical or electronical countermeasures
If the enemy pilot did its job correctly on the launch parameters, 1 and 2 are very unlikely to happen because modern missiles have a lot of energy and advanced guidance systems.
