- Vatnik soup is a Twitter thread series where Pekka Kallioniemi introduces pro-Russian actors and propagandists from around the world. This includes so-called “independent journalists”, politicians, military personnel and of course just regular grifters looking to make money. The series has introductions and deeper insights on how online propaganda and disinformation works and is spread. There are now 200 Vatnik soups, which introduce bad actors along with the strategies they employ to pollute the information space. As Pekka states: the first victim of war is the truth, and Russia considered itself at war with the US, and its perceived vassals, the collective West, EU, and NATO.

Very inreresting. Kudos for both Pekka and Jonathan. One thing that needs to be understood in the West is that the best way to fight disinformation (for now) is to decisively attack and interdict the sources of disinformation, financially and not only.

I'm half British, half Finnish and my grandfathers fought (technically) on opposite sides, but I'm obviously immensely proud of both. My Finnish family always spoke disparagingly about Ryssä and I have as a consequence always been very sceptical about their intentions. Finland suffered from decades of media manipulation even from within it's own broadcasters and newspapers. A malign influence that was, at that time denied, yet later proven. If anyone knows what Moscow is capable of, it's the Finns, Estonians, Latvians, Lithuanians, Poles and, of course, Ukrainians.

Russia has a firm grip on our media here in Canada as well... I'm sick and tired of hearing CBC radio news reports starting off with "Russia says..." Russia lies about everything... why do we repeat what they say? from Ontario, Canada, Slava Ukraïni!

The Russians already have been doing it for many decades. Like sending operatives to universities on student visas to influence future government employees. In fact, I know one in Canada who was a student and recruited by such operatives became communist in 1967, visited Moscow in 1968 where was recruited by KGB. And lately he has been spreading Kremlin's lies about Ukrainians. I'm certain he has been getting paid since he bragged about 2 luxury cars he purchased.

Vatnik Soup website is great. Depressingly funny, depressing nonetheless. But that’s not Pekka’s fault it’s the subject matter. It absolutely needs exposing. Pekka makes it funny to ease the experience for the reader.

maybe Ukraine needs to put a price, value, on the land occupied by Russia, and request payment for it should Putin wants to keep it. Then money will be taken from Russia until it is paid.
It is not totally true that the EU does not put money into countering disinformation. While it does not appear to have a counter disinformation unit, it does seem to fund such activities at a relatively low level through projects like Horizon However, I doubt that these projects are coordinated.
So, now that we know, what are we going to do about it?
Many Russian propaganda channels use pictures and videos of beautiful young women as if the authors of those channels to influence male viewers. And many men fall for it...
