Baltimore Key Bridge collapse: Ship that collided with bridge lost power, says governor | BBC News

- A major bridge in the US city of Baltimore has collapsed into the Patapsco River after a container ship crashed into it.
The bridge snapped and plunged into the water at about 01:30 ET (05:30 GMT) along with vehicles and people.
A huge search operation is under way for six missing people, authorities say, while two others have been pulled from the water.
The ship suffered a "power issue" and issued a distress call moments before the crash, officials say, but was travelling too quickly to change course.

You don't have to be a structural engineer or architect to know that a cargo ship of that size and displacement is going to do some serious damage to any bridge.
Not sure an architect would be any use, they'd probably misuse the word displacement too
@@Toby-yf7zeHis use of displacement is perfectly understood by those of us who know what it means. 👍
@@garybrown2300 We all know what he means, but the technical language is wrong. Rate of change of displacement is what he was looking for: velocity
@@Toby-yf7ze The displacement is the tonnage of the ship. It’s the weight of the water displaced by the ship when it is floating, which is equal to the ship’s weight.
NOW you also know what he meant. 👍
No bridge can survive a direct impact from a Cargo Ship that size, the ship was too heavy.

The desk reporter asked how the bridge collapsed "so easily"? Having a key support column take a hit from a ~100,000 tonne ship travelling at ~8 knots will make make a mess of any bridge.
Some fifty five years ago I was on a Steam Turbine Oil Tanker leaving one of those US east coast ports. Suddenly for no reason the pump supply oil to the turbine shut down, this caused the steam to the turbine valve to close. The ship lost all motive power but not electrical power .
We had three personnel in the ER at the time whilst immediately we had to find and rectify the cause of the power loss, control and settle several other systems which the sudden reduction in steam demand had disturbed and answer with a terse “WE ARE BUSY” to the continually ringing telephone. Within in a few minutes the problem was resolved, we were back under power and the ship was under control.
From
losing the engine to regaining it was an extremely busy time, diagnosing the problem and rectifying it, all the time running up and down ladders. If we hadn’t been in our early twenties we wouldn’t have managed it.
This ship is ten years old? Apparently. Not much has changed
The entire bridge collapsed like a house of cards!
Bridges are essentially under tension. So yes. It fell like a bridge
Not the best design but typical. Some modern bridges are designed to collapse in smaller sections rather than take the whole thing down in the event of an accident like this.
@@TheShahkulufew bridges, a bridge is a bridge. Longer bridges maybe.
This cargo ship is so big and heavy, its like tank, nobody can do anything to prevent any bridge from collapse from that massive hit.
prayers to the worker's and their families 😢
It's funny how people are talking about the age of it, in the comments. As if that was the reason it fell, was because it wasn't new enough to be designed properly. The bridges going across the harbour near me are 20-30 years older, and the base of them would withstand that impact. So would the Goldengate Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge. There should have been stronger footings around that bridge, especially where the ships pass through. Also, they should have tugboats controlling the ships, until they are in open water. A small cost to prevent this from happening.
That's catastrophic, I hope the missing people are ok.
The ship for an as yet unknown reason lost power, the minimum Engineroom crew, which could be as little as two persons would be fighting to resolve the problem, all this time the telephone would be going as the several persons standing on the bridge try to find out what’s going on, whilst the Engineroom crew are extremely busy trying to restore power.
In the modern ships engine control can be, and is activated from the ships bridge. If something malfunctions who is actually on the spot in the Engineroom to resolve the problem. Ships manning needs to be addressed.
Same ship that rammed the harbour in Antwerp !

How often do cargo ships hit bridges? Never in my life time of forty years. I wouldn't worry too much

Don't those ships have backup power systems or redundant systems for critical components.
And if they do and did, and both fail, what then? Sometimes everything that can possibly go wrong goes wrong. The bridge had been standing since 1977. Accidents happen, even when you do what you can to prevent them. Until we know know more... we know nothing.
Well, all we know is the ship went wrong. The bridge behaved exactly as expected.

I think you might mean the Forth Rail Bridge. As someone from Edinburgh, it’s the Forth Rail Bridge they painted every other year, until they found a better paint.👍

Jokes aside, the ‘Francis Scott Key Bridge’ was built on a bond loan under some less than ideal circumstances (read: city corruption)… in 1976.
You're thumbnail. Shows perfect deflection. Pillars all around the communication tower, only one in front of the bridge priorities
While the terms collision and allision are sometimes used interchangeably, they're not the same. In a collision, one vessel strikes another ship, while an allision occurs when a vessel hits a stationary object, such as a dock, bridge, oil platform, or drilling rig.
I learnt something new today. Doesn't help at all, but thanks
How can such vulnerable infrastructure not require the use of tugs as ships enter or leave??????????
RIDICULOUS!
Pity the motorists, but until the bridge is cleared - months? - one of the largest ports on the Eastern Seaboard has been shutdown. That will have a far larger economic impact on far more people that a few thousand people being inconvenienced with a longer commute.
O that city is screwed. It will never come back from this.
Heartbreaking seeing this, these damned ships are too overloaded 😡 it’s ridiculous and friggin’ dangerous!

Good luck having cheap trade
I can't imagine how many people got hurt or worse when the bridge went down.
The bridge is outdated design for modern container ships that have increased in size by 10 times. Old bridge must be upgraded to prevent future disaster.

There are plenty of properly built modern bridges that would survive this easily. Keeping a bridge from the 70's crossing a river with modern ship in transport is ridiculous
The cargo ship was going at a snail speed and took down the bridge (There are new photos of it, the only part of the bridge that is still above the water are held by the containers on the ship). High quality ship, not so much the bridge.
According to reports. The ship lost power and was going at 0.9km/hr upon impact, which is slower than a toddler crawling, the bridge was just too fragile

What would you do if you hit the water in your car, survived the impact, and managed to get out? That water has to be cold 🥶 but I think I'd have a better chance at survival if I took off all of my clothes and shoes and just tried to float instead of trying to swim to shore. Of course, I would most likely be panicking and in shock, so I might not be thinking right. I hope the people that didn't make it didn't suffer. I was just saying last night that I don't like bridges. I'm moving from Southern California to Arkansas. Lots of bridges where I'm going.. not so many here.
Realistically, you'd be trapped in the car. You wouldn't be able to open the doors or windows unless you can break a window to allow the pressure to equalise. For the pressure to equalise the cabin has to fill with water. Trying to get out of a car rapidly filling with water is a significant challenge. It's a terrible way to go.

@TheAntiTrope yeah, that's what I'm saying.. I think I'd have a better chance at surviving if I just float and don't try to swim to shore.. because of the current.. falling debris is a different story. Take that current into consideration, and you'll be carried away from that falling debris pretty quickly once you're out of the car that, at least somewhat, protects you from that debris.

How does somthing like this even happen 😮
Accidents happen
Did you watch the video, or just comment your comment?
2/3 of the ship under water? Another talking head.
"When fully loaded, the ship sits about two-thirds underwater or 75 ft below the surface. Large carriers are designed with a double hull system- with 10 ft between the two hulls-to withstand impact and allow for ease of ballasting in emergency situations, providing better protection."
Cargo ships sit at about 75% below water. You can easily use your brain and google it.
Use your brain and google it - 75% of fully laden cargo ships sit below water. Geez, Americans are dumb!
"Ships are bigger now than in the 70s." That must be why the biggest supertanker in history was built in the US in 1977.
Supertanker != Container ship , In 1980 the largest container ship was 4000TEU, Today the largest container ship is 24,346 TEU - In the last decade alone container ships have doubled in average capacity.
It's true, and also a hell of an understatement.
Also the largest supertanker was built in Yokosuka, Kanagawa, Japan , Not the US.
@@VidiVee It doesn't matter what you call them, does it? Like only container ships can crash into bridges. It doesn't matter where they were built, either, the fact is that the biggest ship in the world was constructed in '77 (or being constructed then) and was three times the weight of this ship fully loaded. Indeed, most of the biggest ships in history were built around that time. The TEU is irrelevant.
No, the longest and tallest ship ever built was The Seawise Giant, and it was built in Japan. Even then, so bloody what? Was it going under this bridge?
All that matters now is they open traffic. Baltimore can't survive it's ports being shut down.
@@TheAntiTropeThe so bloody what is that bridges were built to withstand impacts from the largest cargo vessels at the time - Now cargo vessels have up to 5x the mass and what was a top end vessel is now smaller than average.
People are confused how a bridge built to withstand impact collapsed, the answer is that the architects expected that ships this large would be so infrequent that it would be practical to tug them for safety, instead of having however many dozen a day.
The same scenario was in the recent film 'Leave the World Behind' which 'predicts' the collapse of the US.
Shouldn’t take long to rebuild it, looks like it was shoddy in the first place. Where are the sacrificial concrete Stantons round the bottom of the bridge supports? A ship should not be able to get anywhere near the bridge supports 😮🇬🇧💙💙💙💙🙏🇬🇧
It was built in 1977
It will take years to rebuild. How long will the shipping lane be closed is the issue.
Even protective stantons wouldn't guarantee a bridge be saved with that kind of impact. I've seen a simple wide river barge take a big one out and still impact a bridge column. Concrete is only so strong.
If they sent a mayday warning, why wasn't anyone stopping anymore cars getting onto it and warning the workers on the bridge by clearing it?
The world doesn’t work that quick
I've seen the footage, it takes a few minutes. No chance to do anything
She literally said that there were "moments" between when the mayday call went out and the ship hit the bridge. You do know that teleportation isn't a thing?
@@White_Oak_so the people on the ship did nothing for 'a few minutes '? Just steered STRAIGHT AT the column? (loss of propulsion doesn't equate to loss of steering. This seemed deliberate to me. Didn't you notice how the column didn't give way but strangely the bridge on the right as you watch it seemed to have a more violent reaction than the section of bridge it slammed into?
@@Gfynbcyiokbg8710if there were 'moments ' doesn't that equate to a highly irresponsible, highly negligent crew - waiting 'moments' before they hit a bridge?....
I got a feeling someone will lose their job.
Skipper of the Ship Container could be Arrested. ?
So they needn't have bothered fixing the potholes , if they waited a little longer .

Ship anchor's aren't just about the bit on the end, it's also about the chain on the bottom that contributes to the drag - at the point they realised they were going to have to use the anchors it probably too late to get enough chain out for a braking effect.

Thats it, check all bridges and rebuild them. news laws on bridges.
This is BS. Nobody saw the bridge? Obviously the pilots needed to go to Specsavers
Preventable
Look at adjacent power transmission towers. They are surrounded by large concrete islands whose purpose is to stop ships before the hit the tower. There are two ways bridges are protected. One is by a few piles or piers, the other by such concrete islands. Obviously, only the latter can stop an ocean going vessel. There should be a law to force penny pinching local gov'ts from wasting tax payer money by building something, then not protecting it

This is terrible, I do hope and pray there aren't too many people hurt or fatalities. This bridge wasn't very well built for it to collapse so easily with just one collision. It looks like it was made out of paper straws 🥲💔

@@kirkevans2196 PROBBLY! I like how everyone's blaming the bridge.
Gosh, this will take months just to correct the shipping lane. Years to reconstruct the bridge. Always was so
