Baltimore Key Bridge collapse: Ship that collided with bridge lost power, says governor | BBC News

  • A major bridge in the US city of Baltimore has collapsed into the Patapsco River after a container ship crashed into it.
The bridge snapped and plunged into the water at about 01:30 ET (05:30 GMT) along with vehicles and people.
A huge search operation is under way for six missing people, authorities say, while two others have been pulled from the water.
The ship suffered a "power issue" and issued a distress call moments before the crash, officials say, but was travelling too quickly to change course.

You don't have to be a structural engineer or architect to know that a cargo ship of that size and displacement is going to do some serious damage to any bridge.

Some fifty five years ago I was on a Steam Turbine Oil Tanker leaving one of those US east coast ports. Suddenly for no reason the pump supply oil to the turbine shut down, this caused the steam to the turbine valve to close. The ship lost all motive power but not electrical power .
We had three personnel in the ER at the time whilst immediately we had to find and rectify the cause of the power loss, control and settle several other systems which the sudden reduction in steam demand had disturbed and answer with a terse “WE ARE BUSY” to the continually ringing telephone. Within in a few minutes the problem was resolved, we were back under power and the ship was under control.
    From
losing the engine to regaining it was an extremely busy time, diagnosing the problem and rectifying it, all the time running up and down ladders. If we hadn’t been in our early twenties we wouldn’t have managed it.

It's funny how people are talking about the age of it, in the comments. As if that was the reason it fell, was because it wasn't new enough to be designed properly. The bridges going across the harbour near me are 20-30 years older, and the base of them would withstand that impact. So would the Goldengate Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge. There should have been stronger footings around that bridge, especially where the ships pass through. Also, they should have tugboats controlling the ships, until they are in open water. A small cost to prevent this from happening.

The ship for an as yet unknown reason lost power, the minimum Engineroom crew, which could be as little as two persons would be fighting to resolve the problem, all this time the telephone would be going as the several persons standing on the bridge try to find out what’s going on, whilst the Engineroom crew are extremely busy trying to restore power.
In the modern ships engine control can be, and is activated from the ships bridge. If something malfunctions who is actually on the spot in the Engineroom to resolve the problem. Ships manning needs to be addressed.

What would you do if you hit the water in your car, survived the impact, and managed to get out? That water has to be cold 🥶 but I think I'd have a better chance at survival if I took off all of my clothes and shoes and just tried to float instead of trying to swim to shore. Of course, I would most likely be panicking and in shock, so I might not be thinking right. I hope the people that didn't make it didn't suffer. I was just saying last night that I don't like bridges. I'm moving from Southern California to Arkansas. Lots of bridges where I'm going.. not so many here.

Realistically, you'd be trapped in the car. You wouldn't be able to open the doors or windows unless you can break a window to allow the pressure to equalise. For the pressure to equalise the cabin has to fill with water. Trying to get out of a car rapidly filling with water is a significant challenge. It's a terrible way to go.

Look at adjacent power transmission towers. They are surrounded by large concrete islands whose purpose is to stop ships before the hit the tower. There are two ways bridges are protected. One is by a few piles or piers, the other by such concrete islands. Obviously, only the latter can stop an ocean going vessel.
