I lived in Vietnam for 4 1/2 years and put 47,000 km on my Honda SH 150. I saw most of Vietnam and all the beach areas. My favorite retirement city: Qui Nhon. The beautiful beach was raked twice a day by a team, there were no foreigner prices, the people were excited to meet this foreigner, mr beachfront hotel cost $12 a night, lots to do and see in the area, big university there, etc. I studied the language fir 2 1/2 months in Hanoi, then a couple years later did the same in Saigon, District 1 in HCMC because you need knowledge of that southern dialect everywhere south of Hue.

And they grow cherries there! We stayed at the Da Lat Wonder resort. I'd move there tomorrow. Down side, is lack of a fully equipped hospital if needed. And I'm officially old now. Unlike you guys! I am also smiling as I am going back there in 3 days time for another 2 month break. Where? Nha Trang, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh. I really like Hue and Da Nang - but year round as Dan says, the weather is better in Nha Trang as you don't get the cold 2 months you get in Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue. Also, if you stay in Nha Trang near the market you avoid most of the tourists and still only a 15 minute walk from the beach. But I love them all and will be retiring to SE Asia (mainly Vietnam) next year. cheers guys, its a small world - maybe bump into you again sometime !!

When people leave their home countries and relocate to places that are filled with others that have done the same there might be something special about those locations?

I think I'd definitely put Phu Quoc in my top five. Agree that Da Nang should be in the top 5. PQ is the very definition of paradise and don't forget it's not just a single island. You can go to explore that chain of islands to the south west. And there's yet another chain of islands way down south called Nam du although I read that that place caters only to package tourists, not independent travelers.

Hey! Few things. I am an American married 20 years to a dual Vietnam and USA citizen. Been to Vietnam often enough. I am a "foreign spouse" of a Viet Kieu, as the Vietnam government refers to me. I have a different visa unlike a tourist. I get something closer to a permanent residence should I choose.
FYI: The first time I stepped foot in Vietnam was in 2002, when it was nearly impossible to get a visa... things changed over the years.
I had met my (now) wife as a penpal online in 2000. She was the first person I met when I cleared the airport in Ho Chi Minh City. Yep! She met me at the airport.
My wife and I are in the process of buying a property in Vung Tau in Ba Ria province, near to Ho Chi Minh City. Vung Tau is one city you did not mention. The first time I saw Vung Tau was 24 years ago. My wife, from Thu Duc, Ho Chi Minh, likes Vung Tau. What made you not consider Vung Tau?...to close to Ho Chi Minh?
The second choice for us was Go Cong, South of Ho Chi Minh in the Mekong Delta.
Yeah, we have been everywhere...not quite. Still a few places.....Sa Pa anyone? Con Dao? Those are still left for me, in addition to the far south in the Mekong Delta...Ca Mau.
    Also like Buon Ma Thuot.
We also liked Can Tho....the city featured in the French, albeit risque, movie The Lover!!!....La Amante!!!
Anyway, there are many nice places left to see in Vietnam.... even for me.
As far as the visa thing, unless you marry a local or have a business, you are doing visa runs. That's fine by me. Don't want the place overrun by tourists.
    These are my thoughts.

Hello there, I saw your previous video where you mentioned that Vietnam may offer a 90 day e visa. You said that you would keep us informed about it and I do not know if I have missed a message from you about it in the 4 months since the video. I have 2 Qs: 1) Does an American need to acquire a visa to travel to Vietnam, or can I just go with my passport? 2) Is the 90 day e visa in effect, and if so, do you know if regular border runs can be made without any problems from Vietnam immigration? Thanks for all of your super helpful information.

    • @VagabondAwake
      @VagabondAwake  2 месяца назад +2

Yes, you need a visa to go to Vietnam. And last I heard the 90 day eVisa is still in effect. So you would need to leave the country and get a new eVisa every 90 days. You will have to wait until you are out of the country to apply for the next eVisa and it takes a few days to clear before you fly back in. That is the formal way to do it until things change. Other expats are using agents to make this a little easier. Plus, there is talk of the 1 year visa coming back but nothing certain yet. Every country in the world can change visa rules whenever they please. People put up with this because they love the country more than other countries in SE Asia.

We are a couple in our 50s like to eat local street food, have local beers, enjoy walks along the beach but not necessarily swimming and sunbathing. Looking for a local good walkable area and an apartment that has one bedroom (not a studio) doesn’t necessarily need to have a full kitchen but a living room TV area and washing machine would be necessary.

Thailand is a great choice. Maybe south for the islands. Koh Samui or Koh Phangan. In Vietnam, I would do Nha Trang because it may not be warm enough in Da Nang during the burn season if it starts early.

Another good video, thanks. Dan, what would you recommend to set up on your laptop when (for instance) a bank wants to verify your identity by phone (but my US phone number will be not be in service and will change with each new country's sim). What can I install on my laptop to receive those texts messages which will provide a verification number (instead of sending it to my phone)?

@@VagabondAwake True , I bet you met not only retirees. If you like every three months leave and come back. If you young you can do but for many older retirees this is not solution. Can I not married to Vietnamese woman stay as long I want ? No, so you can only visit Vietnam on tourist visa.
