Yeah i use to love getting up early on Saturdays just for the scifi anime. Akira, robot carnival, this series, runzho z, and many many more. Now this new syfy is total horse shit. Bring back the classics.
I remember buying the first episode on VHS at Suncoast. After watching it, immidiately went back out and bought the other 2. Come to think of it, when it was released on DVD it was one of my friend's first buys. And now that my memory is getting jogged, I might even have a full version of the song on some Best of' cd set around.
Yes, love this anime! The intro and outro are gorgeous, I remember going to the A-kon in '99 and bought the soundtrack to the movie. I might also have the VHS.
It was this very OVA that got me hooked on Anime. I remember watching it on Sci-fi Channel. And I was forever hooked. I tryed to remember what this OVA was called. finally found it after searching for a long freakin time.
"Gall Force" was what got me hooked. There's a lot of anime I missed back at that time, saw adverts in videos all the time.. but never even got to watch a quarter of it.
Reading the comments has been super awesome, seeing the hundreds of people like me who discovered anime via this, on SciFi Saturday's in the 90's. Then stumbling into your local Suncoast to buy them on VHS. I was right there with you, and when I eventually worked at my local Suncoast, you better believe I got them in a steelbook on DVD. Fucking hell, man. I'm old. Haha
I remember seeing this on Saturday Anime on SciFi, and it was my very first anime. I found the complete OVA at an anime convention and bought it without hesitation. Even as an adult I can see why I was so mesmerized by it and why I based all anime off of this, like a persons first love.. Its wonderful and is one of my favorite animes. This stays as a permanent piece in my collection and is not going anywhere.
I totally forgot about this. I am not a huge anime fan, but this movie was my favorite as a child. This song gave me goosebumps the same way the Tristrum song, from Diablo 2, does.
Reading some of these comments from people who watched this mini-series in what I am guessing was the 90s makes me smile. Everyone seems to love the music, Iria... with all of the memories of this still holding a special place in their hearts.
The first time I saw this, it was during a Monster Mayhem sort of marathon thing on the Sci Fi channel during a summer in the mid 90s (like 97, 98), I was 12 or 13. I remember it was supposedly broken up into 2 halves, the whole thing, i saw one half the first day but missed the other half. This was before anime got big, so I didn't even think it was japanese at the time, because it was dubbed. I forgot about this and when I tried to remember it, I couldn't think of the name of it, this went on for 15 years until I saw a picture of Iria one day and the monster. This was before I think even toonami, so this was my first real look at more hardcore anime than say afternoon pokemon showed ya. However the first full anime feature I saw was galaxy express 999 one night also on the sci fi channel and that blew me away with the story and characters.
JEEZ I had an art book of this from 94 that my brother shipped to me from Japan. I was going though Amazon Prime videos and had completely forgotten about this until I saw the image of her jumping with the gun in the library. SUCH A GOOD SHOW.
Loved this song and anime. A character in a game I did back in high school, was kind of inspired by her, I named Alys, a Galactic Patrol officer. They are like Division agents, if anyone knows the game Tom Clancy's Division, but in space lol. In her redesign, I actually mixed her hairstyle with Lightning of Final Fantasy XIII. Android 18 of Dragon Ball Z, was also a bit of an influence.
Nice! I just picked up a used Iria: ZtA OST CD from Book-Off and it is 26 tracks of 90's Japanese synth-pop greatness! I also picked up Kenji Kawai's GitS 2: Innocence OST CD but I actually prefer Iria.
Combat Maneuvers Let's compare. Both are short (5'2 I think) with red hair worn in a bob cut. And a lot of anime in the 90s used fashion from the 80s for character design. Sounds like I'm gushing here, but I had to say it.
Edward Gaines That's what I meant by "I think I know where you get the idea", like you said anime artists probably drew inspiration from the latest fashion and music in the 80's which might have had an influence on the design; however, if Iria was real I don't think she'd look like Pat Benatar, perhaps she might look similar but not exactly. At the very least I haven't seen anyone, celebrity or not look like this character. In my opinion Iria is very beautiful and it would be very difficult to really find someone with those fine features she has. In a way you sorta have the idea of what she might look like but not exactly. I think a more realistic portrayal of the character may be Resident Evils Ada Wong in RE 4 and RE 6 games. Another fictional character who looks like Iria whom I think was inspired by her, is Bullet Witch. These two characters are close approximations but since they are not related, they are only depictions of what she may look like (in my opinion). Recently there was a Japanese 3D animator by the name of Teruyuki Ishikawa who recreated the character in 3D with a more lifelike appearance. If he would produce a full CG animated film of Iria, it would blow our minds.
Combat Maneuvers Just goggled Bullet Witch. She looks like a vampire hunter! I don't see the resemblance. Still it's good to see people still remember Iria.
Edward Gaines Yeah man, I've been a huge fan of the anime since I first watched it back in 96. Also around that time I was listening to 80's music like Tears for Fears, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Mr Mister, Duran Duran, Pat Benatar (lol), Depeche Mode, and a whole other awesome obscure 80's synth bands. If you enjoyed watching Iria as much as I did, I recommend watching DNA2 and Video Girl Ai. Those two OVA's were written and illustrated by Masakazu Katsura which was responsible for Iria's character design. So when watching DNA2 or Video Girl Ai you'll find the art direction very similar to that of Iria's. Oh! And if you haven't checked out the live action Zeiram films, check them out. 100% 80's cheese lol! Of course everyone prefers the anime over the live action. Whenever you find yourself watching Iria: Zeiram the Animation again, watch the Japanese version with subtitles, it's 100 times better!
my adolescence right here, had a poster of her in my room. God please let me come back to that times.
Iria is one of the most awesome anime girls ever, along with 1980's Priss Asagiri
Back when anime wasn’t a mistake
I remember this from Saturday Morning Anime on the SciFi channel yearssss ago.
Same here. This and tank police got me hooked
Early morning
Yuna69able yes! I think that was around 1997?
Yeah i use to love getting up early on Saturdays just for the scifi anime. Akira, robot carnival, this series, runzho z, and many many more. Now this new syfy is total horse shit. Bring back the classics.
+Yuna69able oh yeah, good times!

dbsommers1 I have one of the VHS tapes and the OVA on DVD. #SuncoastMemories
dbsommers1 do you have the full version?? dude i wanna hear that!!!
Yes, love this anime! The intro and outro are gorgeous, I remember going to the A-kon in '99 and bought the soundtrack to the movie. I might also have the VHS.
One of if not the best opening songs to an anime I've ever heard.
must agree
The best opening songs in anime are DNA2 intro and X-Tv. Also Death Note intro, that one is so badass.
This one is ok. The animation is THE BEST tho.
This anime is responsible for my wasted nerd life. First show I ever watched and went "Yup. This is a thing for me now".
Love that song :D
Czyżby Hyper?

saturday anime was wonderful. i would kill for a good release of roujin z. think i still have a couple of anime on some old vhs somewhere.
I watched that same Sci Fi anime block back in 97. This, Akira, Roujin Z and Green Legend Ran.
My niece name is Iria my sister and my brother in law got that name from this anime ,love it.

やっぱセル画いいなー
My lord that music is so dang good. This opening makes me want to check this show out.
kent sulivan ION you really should. it’s a classic.
I remember watching on TV in the late 90s when I was 7 or 8 yo, got me hooked on animes since then.
After watching this opening I feel like theirs a lot of classics I missed from the 90s
one of the best openings ever
THE BEST
it's literally my second fav after Berserk's "Tell me Why"
***** tell me why ?
Tchitchouan Inouane like for real?
***** hhhhhhh yeah ?
Wowowで無料放送してたのを録画してから死ぬほど繰り返し観てたなぁ。懐かしすぎてゲボでそう。
One of my favorites! I rented this on VHS over and over back in the 90s. I have a poster of her someplace, I should find it...
I remember seeing this on Saturday Anime on SciFi, and it was my very first anime. I found the complete OVA at an anime convention and bought it without hesitation. when they used to show "Tank Police" good times.
+YO MOMMA "Dominan Tank Police"
yeah I miss when scifi ran anime, and that's exactly where I seen this
I remember recording this from Saturday Anime back in the day...I loved it so much even though I wasn't really into scifi back then
For me, it was Yu Yu Hakusho that got me hooked to anime. It's my first love and I base all other animes to it. :D
I love this song!!!! Especially love Iria, she's just beautiful!!!! ❤
this song is theeeeee best.. this anime wrecked my emotions when I watched it at 3am as a young teen on sci fi channel when it was a good channel..
I totally forgot about this. I am not a huge anime fan, but this movie was my favorite as a child. This song gave me goosebumps the same way the Tristrum song, from Diablo 2, does.

I remember watching this on the Sci-Fi channel as a kid. Great stuff, wished for more.
This is what really brought me into anime. For a while I forgot the name of the OVA luckly I found it and bought the complete OVA.

Yes, it's too bad it never got the chance to blossom into a full-fledged anime like other famous ones. That intro is straight outta the 80s!
the smoothest opening ever and expresses all that style
Absolutely love this show's opening
this takes me waaaaaaaaay back.

One of the best anime’s of all time. Who remembers Sci-fi Saturdays after MST3K?
Still the best anime to date IMO...... Berserk a close second. I haven't found anything that comes close to the perfection that was this series...
Jojo
I'm disgusted with myself that I haven't seen this OP before today
I miss Saturday anime on the SciFi channel.
They need to bring it back
Nice! I just picked up a used Iria: ZtA OST CD from Book-Off and it is 26 tracks of 90's Japanese synth-pop greatness! I also picked up Kenji Kawai's GitS 2: Innocence OST CD but I actually prefer Iria.
Zairaman compared to Alien is like a Wolf compared with puppy :D Love this anime! Arigato dazaimasu!
omg thank you for this opening ,last time i see was in 1998
Why don't more people know about this show? ಠ益ಠ
Because most people in now of days never ever heard of the movie, Zeiram nor the anime.
Kevin Striker This OVA was pretty bad, so naturally it stayed under the radar.
That's a good thing. Let us have this hidden gem all to ourselves.
Because it's only 6 measly episodes.
Fucking underrated
oh my god this looks awesome!
it is. watch it.
one of the most imaginative anime you'll ever see.
finallyyyy found this!!!!😍😍😍
+Linda Sawan it's pretty rare
superb opening !
Been looking for this for years but I couldn't remember the name of the film. Found it while looking up battle angel.
I only somehow just recently found out the anime is a prequel to the live action movies. Going to have to check them out.
懐かしい
Watched this as a young one such a good show slash opening \\m//,,
It was anime characters like Iria that helped define what I think a "strong woman" trope should be.
Still have my steel box dvd set
Back in the day of pre-commercial release VHS tapes! ; )
I always though she was Karin aoi's sister
Excellent opening and OVA.
thank you for posting this.
Awesome Jam
Really so good.
the good old days
my first love lol
実写とアニメは全然別物でそれぞれ違う面白さを目指せば良いとは思うのですが、も少し「雨宮慶太」よりにしてもバチは当たらなかっただろうになあ!、とは当時のスタッフは誰も言わなかったのでしょうか?
Yes 👍
My childhood show
They should make new episodes
i might be one of the only people under the age of 18 that watched the entire Ova
love the opening and ending and the anime ♥
MEXLadyShadowAngel sadly I can't find the ending credits song here on RUclips.

Has anyone noticed that Iria looks like Pat Benatar from the 80's?
lol I think not but OK. Nothing against the singer btw though I get where you get the idea lol.
