    Funnily enough, the man in the thumbnail is "Li Ching-Yuen" who supposedly lived 256 years. They actually found proof from the emperror congratulating him on this 100th and 150th birthday in the 1800's... But since he died in 1933 they could have never really confirm his age, beside those letters from the emperor and some proof stating that he was in the army in his 70s and 80s a while back. There definitely has to be someone older than Jeanne Calmant that wasn't officially recorded by guinness, but 256 would be double her age and really hard to believe... but what if?

    Thanks for explaining this practice Thoughty2!
    And Let's explain some facts that was missed in the video!
    First of all, If you want to be a Buddhist monk, you have to remove all your hair (go bald!) and even shave the eyebrows and the beard too! (even so, in some cases you can see some monks have beards sometimes... but they have a set of rules to follow) so, anyone can't casually put a robe and go with your Manly beard and the Mohawk saying "Imma be a monk!".
    The Second thing is that there are some factions even among the Buddhists! As you've already know, some of them are Mahayana, Therawada (sometimes known as Heenayana, specially by Mahayana people) and the Zen!
    But actually, Buddha never agreed on extreme asceticism and hedonism as others before me explained well! But what we have to get from this mummification process is the devotion & dedication to something that you want to achieve! Even Buddha himself had a Strong dedication to achieve enlightenment and he said himself that " I will not stand up from this place until I achieve the state of Buddha!" on the Night before he achieved the enlightenment!
    And we have to praise Mahayana and Zen monks for their dedication to Be spiritual as much as they can! Sometimes you can find such extreme examples like these and overall you can say their work is amazing! It's not that Theravada was less spiritual... Even after the Buddha's time, You can see there were many monks (I mean Tens of thousands) Who achieved the enlightenment! and still there are many Theravada monks who are living a spiritual life in the modern world!
    The third thing is that enlightenment isn't just a moment that you see the truth or something! That might be somewhat true for some scenarios but in Buddhism, It is described as a state where you are free from the mortal desires, feelings and the cycle of reincarnation! They describe is as the state of true happiness, true immortality and etc. And the Most important thing is, It is permanent! Once you achieved it for real, You don't have to be worried about losing that state! It is really called "Nirvana" in Buddhism
    ALSO, IF SOMEONE HERE IS A MUCH EXPERT ON THIS TOPIC, PLEASE COMMENT DOWN A BETTER EXPLENATION! MY VOCABULARY IS A BIT LIMITED SINCE MY NATIVE LANGUAGE ISN'T ENGLISH!

    Fun fact:One of the biggest reason why they wanted to do this is for stop famine,epidemic or something like that happening.
    They wanted to take all of suffer that people have, so they won’t suffer from it anymore.
    And some of them have to change their clothes two times each year for some reason such as cleaning them or prevent it from getting moldy,
    And their old clothes will cut to tiny pieces and putted into omamori amulet,the small bag made of silk or something.
    And you can buy it!
    And I mean, if there’s some artifacts that has spiritual power,
    This piece of cloth that once was covered great monk’s corpse that sacrificed himself for people is definitely one of them!
    I’m sorry if my English was bad.

      Neo has epiphanies throughout the film. The "stopping bullets" scene is what all that added up to, completing his "make over", where the walls fall away, so to speak, and Neo sees reality for what it is (i.e. not just an epiphany). I would I agree with 42, and say that the scene is a pretty good analogy of enlightenment, rather than just a "glimpse of a truth."

      Time to check your priorities perhaps?

    Sometimes living and serving humanity in the world are more challenging than introspection, solitude, and slow-perfect-chemical-induced suicide, and it lasts much longer until we die naturally.

    There was a comparison between Western and Eastern Monks in the book Concentration by Mouni Sadhu. Where he saw tombs of Western Monks in abundance, undecayed. You might find the book fascinating.

    Reminds me of the sadhus in Himalayan mountains said to be living on just dew or not eating at all but in suspended animation. Interesting that it's so similar. I remember a story my grandfather told me, that one of his friends had joined sanyansi hood or saint hood and moved near Himalayas . They said he met by chance with a sadhu doing upsana or prayers for more than one fifty years in search of moksha. They were not supposed to disturb him .i guess it's same suspended animation but in cold because mind you it's on very remote areas near gangotri in Himalayan ranges. They train their body to overcome everything,n that is first stage of moksh. Eventually my grandfather's friend came back to main valley with fellow sanyansi group n lived that life. They were not that extreme as the one's on extreme areas doing prayers. This reminds me of that...hmmph. n they also were very skinny like skeleton, YET he said that person was living for so long but in state of meditation. Idk how much of it is true but similar stories are present in hindu sadhus. It's the ultimate goal for anyone trying to gain moksh nearer to God i think.

    I watched a video about the monk that mummified himself, and they put sunglasses on him(since his eyes degraded) you can still go take pictures of him. Also, I'd like an explanation to why the mountain water has arsenic in it...

    • @censusgary
      @censusgary 2 года назад +1

      Arsenic is naturally present in some rocks, and it can dissolve into the water supply. Public water utilities have maximum allowable levels of arsenic (very low levels) for drinking water. Arsenic is, overall, bad for people’s health (although it was used as medicine in the 19 and early 20th centuries). But I can see how it would be a feature instead of a bug if you’re trying to mummify yourself, and you don’t want pesky insects and rodents eating your incorrupt body.

      @@censusgary So it's a naturally produced compound? Interesting, I never knew that. In regards to a survival situation, how unlucky would that be? Finding arsenic water..

    • @censusgary
      @censusgary 2 года назад +6

      @@mattw6705 Arsenic is a chemical element (atomic number 33), not a compound. But, yes, it occurs naturally, and is fairly abundant on earth.
      I once heard a wilderness survival instructor say if you find a water hole, you should look for bugs and whatnot swimming in the water, as proof that the water doesn’t have deadly levels of arsenic or other poisons. Then, of course, you have to boil the water and strain it before you drink it.

      @@mattw6705 yeh arsenic is damn nigh everywhere on earth, incredibly common. A lot of plants use it as a pesticide as it's so easily taken up by the roots.
