But when it was around this time in 2019 I had actually picked up commuting 50km (~ 31 miles) a day most days of the week after not having cycled for almost two decades (still wondering how and why that break happened...) . So I found myself back in love with cycling at age ~54, cycling 9000km (5600 miles) in 2019. 2020 has been a slow year (3100 km) with a part of it indoors. Picking up again this year and hopefully most of it outside. I really enjoy your videos, great content, great bikes, great scenery and great company.
Love the music. Love both of you for being honest and down to earth. I'm with Ms. Cools. Long, unorganized rides from nowhere to nowhere! I dig both bikes of course, but Ms. Cools needs a lighter, faster bike since hearing her mention it a few times in videos. Although, there's nothing to dislike about the current one. Comfortable, indestructable and great color. Thank you!
I happen to live an hours drive from the DK routes. I've never participated officially, but I have gone up there with my bike and explored around a good amount of gravel in, and around the whole area. But I'm not a 'racer.' In fact, though I like the occasional organized, group ride, I tend to be more oriented in the solo-exploring ride mode. I have a group I ride with on weekends, but during the week I'm pretty much on my own and finding interesting gravel roads and terrain to experience. I ride a Specialized AWOL on those rides, and though a steel bike, and on the heavier side, it works really well on gravel. Very compliant frame and supple tires. What you both did (stopping to brew some nice coffee along the way) is one of my favorite things to sometimes do on a ride. So, for me, I love the freedom of not feeling in a big hurry as I would on a race course. But that's just me. The drive out here is a long one, and is a factor to consider, but I'm pretty sure you and Ms. Cools would love the Flint Hills gravel we have here. Hilly, rocky, but with great vistas, too. 200 miles of that sort of gravel is a big challenge, though! You could always opt for the 100 mile stretch. Any way, I enjoy your videos. Keep them coming (and hope your wrist gets well soon)!
You guys are cuter together than kitten mittens. I thought for a moment Ms Cools was going to announce that y'all were getting a tandem. You could be the new Alex and Leone Singer!
I don't know. I don't think Ms. Cools really wants to drag Henrywildeberry all over creation! As it is now, she knows he has no choice but to pedal and do some work when they're on their singles. However, as a big fan of tandems (on and off road), I cannot recommend this idea enough. Tandems are fun, tandems are great... BUT they're for the right combination of people. Some couples shouldn't be on a tandem. As they say about tandems, they're relationship accelerators. For some this may be good. Find out quickly that two aren't compatible and be done with it before any real damage is done (kids, house, savings, lives, etc.). And if Ms. Cools & Henrywildeberry are happy as clams on their singles, why upset something that works? That said, perhaps they can borrow or rent one to see how they are as one on a tandem. And then perhaps we could look forward to beautiful music together on some lugged beauty of a steel dream machine that the two can pedal off into the sunset on. I'd love to see it, but only if it works.

More of a mountain bike/bike packing event the STAGECOACH 400 goes from Idyllwild to San Diego and back. It's an unsupported event in SoCal. I also thought you were going to propose to Ms. Cools.
I did the dk50 this year. Her bike will be fine to do the ride. The racers are definitely racing, but turns out most of everyone is racing themselves to just finish. Finishing what length you are going for is the winning part for every rider.
Tim Long Congratulations on your DK finish! Does that mean you automatically get a place for next year, or do you still have to put your name in the lottery?
I am too old AND too heavy for a regular bike. I just got a Greenspeed Magnum XL and enjoy riding it all over, but can't get on those great trails you guys ride on. It is a give and take equation when you get older, but getting out there exercising regularly is the important thing.
What have you done to your wrist Henry?. Have you spoken to "Paths less Pedalled"? about their tour across country. Ms Cools opened a door for us when she spoke about the future....we have sold one of our cars and have bought a cheap Ebike!. Used for going to the local shopping centre and the local town. My husband got 28 miles out of one charge going over our local hilly beauty spot. Keep them coming!!!
This comment really lifted my day! Thank you, Sheila. It's great to hear about your husband cycling to work. It reminded me of when I was commuting to work I would ride a few days a week. Getting on the bike in the morning was the best feeling. When I arrived I felt awake and ready to dive in. The only thing I wish I knew then was dynamo lighting. I was using battery powered lights and a few times the lights were too dim to see where I was going. The wrist...I was having a little too much fun making another video. That's on hold for now...
Howdy, Henry and Ms Cools! For a reasonable route across your country, you may want to check out a channel by Ryan van Duzer. He and his then girlfriend rode together across America and avoided major roads as much as possible. He put up a display of their route at one point. I have to admit that I was somewhat envious of their ability to complete such a ride - and to do it relatively cheaply. Nice discussion, by the way, sitting in the 'bush' (as we Aussies call it) under a big tree.

Hello In Germany, C L! PBP would be an awesome experience! Depending on where our cycling takes us over the next few years, we're thinking about it. We've been watching all the videos and Instagram posts coming out of PBP this year and really wished we could have been there too. Ms. Cools is more prepared for it, so if I were to consider it next time I will need to get out and train on a few more long brevet's. My longest ride to date is a 300k. I've sketched out a 400k route that I will be attempting once I get back into shape after taking some time off the bike these past few weeks. With any luck that will be later this fall. Listening to that music I was always asking myself when there is a mexican standoff but than I realized you might have escaped from the bad guys because you drink the best filtered coffee in the world. Thanks Radnally. The Fitz bike is my third steel bike, and by far and away the nicest of them all. I went with standard diameter tubing, because I wanted to make sure it wasn't too stiff. That turned out to be the case, and I wouldn't go any thinner. It's designed to be ridden with only the lightest amount of extra load (e.g. a handlebar bag). On the recent tour we went on, it was a bit too flexy with all the weight I put on it. Unloaded, it floats and soaks up bumps like nothing I have ever felt before. Some of that is the tire size (48mm) and the other part is the large rake in the fork and thinner fork blades. If you're looking for an adventure bike, you might want to consider slightly thicker tubing to handle some extra load and abuse. This bike was imagined to be an everyday mixed terrain bike with the possibility of light "sport" touring. It's living up to that definition, but I need to watch out for overloading it with tents and sleeping gear.
I have same little manual coffee grinder, for camping and travel. The best! But have never brought along cycling, which is a great twist; thanks for motivation.
Really enjoy your videos and while I enjoy a fresh coffee in a beautiful place, having an open flame with all that dry tinder and wind doesn't seem like a good idea, at least to me. If that accidentally got knocked over......🔥🔥🔥

@@Henrywildeberry been there, done that. Mine was a slow speed fall off my bike. Reached out to break my fall and sprained my hand and cracked a bone. D"oh! Good thing for your arm, otherwise you might have fallen on your well-armored back. 😁 I hope it heals quickly.
We want to do our part. The lockdowns for covid have really helped us to get creative lowering our need to drive. Food choices and packaging can make a big impact as well. We try and limit plastic wrapped or bottled water and pick products from manufacturers who use more responsible packaging. I know it's not enough, but we have to start somewhere. Thanks for watching!
Ever consider RAGBRAI? I’m looking at it myself for this year. The crowds of cyclists would be the attraction ... and maybe the downside, apart from the travel to and from the ride.
It's sad that too few people have such attitude towards their environmental impact and the majority of people wanting to have all the comfort that the modern technology could give.
I too think about doing DK but going all the way out there makes me think twice about it. Also it is extremely difficult to compete with the riding we have here in Norcal.
