Excellent tutorial- thank you! I bought my first serger recently and wanted to change the thread. I was going to follow the owner's manual but then I found this video and I was reminded about the quick method. I had not used a serger in so long I had forgotten about that method.
This is exactly what I need. This tutorial is really clear and ao much more helpful than the Brother CD. I thought I would be serging in white forever more, so thank you!
This is such an awesome video...you cared enough to show step by step...which took time and it just shows that you are an awesome instructor and I thank you sooooo much because I needed this instruction in this way...Many Blessings, E.
This was such a huge help setting up my new machine that came with different colored thread in it already. Easy to swap out with your first method, thank you!
Huh. That double-square knot is interesting! I've always just used a regular square knot (which is simply RIGHT OVER LEFT, then LEFT OVER RIGHT.) Also, I don't change my tensions: I just square-knot the new threads, and let the new color run through as I hold the tail. Works about 99% of the time; even through both needles. (Only once in a while the thread will break at the needle point, and then it's just a simple re-thread right at that point.) Great video though.... thank you! I love my Brother 1034D serger!
WOW this is so cool! I own the same serger and I never use it because I don't know how to thread it. but guess what? I am going to use it now!!! :) thank you so much
This must be helping some people, but to me, the 2nd method in particular is total madness - virtually taking the machine apart and unhooking the threads internally, removing the stitch finger etc. Each to their own but this is much more difficult and complex than just rethreading it, and actually gives the impression that you have to be able to do this to change the thread. Not so. There's a very easy and simple rethreading procedure. When I first got my 1034D, like everyone else I was intimidated by the idea of rethreading. At first I had to follow the book instructions, but now I can do it really quickly - there are instructions on the inside of the machine. It's just practice and getting used to it. So I would advise everyone to bite the bullet and just put in the practice.
Melanie Maguire I agree!!! I just got my serger, been using it less than a week & I can change all 4 threads in less than 2 minutes!! This method seems like so much more work!! And with this method you're cutting the 3rd and 4th threads and rethreading them through the needles anyways- which is the hardest part of even threading those 2 needles!! Why go through all the trouble of tying knots when it would take you literally less time to just follow the guides and thread them on the machine. I can kinda understand the Upper and Lower Loopers as they are the "harder" ones to thread, but like you said people should just take the time to learn to thread their sergers.! It's not hard! There's the book the machine came with, a color coded (& Numbered!) guide printed inside the machine and a ton of RUclips videos showing how to do it! There are comments from people thinking this IS how you thread a serger. Once you learn how to properly thread your serger, this method could be used occasionally, so I'm glad I learned it's an option, but for the most part, I'll still stick with threading it the regular way.
Thank you so much for the tips to rethreading the serger because I just bought one for the first time and it came threaded. But this titbit was informative.
Thanks for this vid. I refer to it everytime I switch my threads :D This method is much more convenient for me so thanks for sharing. Would love to see a similar video showing step by step machine maintenance (for this particular overlocker) :)
Great video, just received mine in the mail yesterday. Will need to change thread from what came in the box soon. Do you do any other videos with this serger? I'm going to purchase the elastic foot. Would love to see more videos on this machine, new subscriber here!
NaturalDane Thanks for following along. I do have a full rethreading from scratch video too - here: so-sew-easy.com/thread-brother-1034d-serger/ But that's all so far. I'm still learning to use it well myself :-) Good luck with yours.
Thank you so much for these tutorials on the 1034D. I received my machine in 2011, and it's pretty much sat there all by itself since then. Your video's have given me hope! LOL. I looked but did not see any other 1034D videos from you. Do you plan to do any video's showing us more about how to actually use the machine? I have the manual, but you explain things and show things close up, which is so much more user friendly than a manual. I have my fingers and toes crossed hoping you will make additional videos for the 1034D. Many Thanks!
Betty Parrott I have a full threading video from scratch just here - ruclips.net/video/5q0z0QiNVQM/видео.html but I wasn't planning on really doing much more. The Craftsy serger class is just so good, that I recommend people take that instead. She does a far better job of explaining it all than I could. Check it out here - goo.gl/WAbHbv
May I ask...since you got your serger...what accessories or attachments have you found most necessary to purchase (i.e. what was necessary vs what was desirable of the things you purchased for your serger) Hope this makes sense...lol...Thanks for all your insight and instruction...it has helped me soooo much...it's like having a great friend with you as you learn and I appreciate ya! E.
Hi Debbie I am on the cusp of hitting the "buy" button for this overlocker. I have never ever used one - is this the right one to go for? Anyone else who is following Debbie bought this as their first one. Am I doing the right thing- so many decisions !!!!!!
Ornella Day Hi Ornella. Why not pop over to our sewing chat group and ask for feedback from the members there. They can either reassure you or point you in the right direction if they think something else would suit you better. 'Fraid I'm not a lover of Facebook but maybe I should join the social media revolution. I've just discovered that my 2yr old Janome has a very similar facility but without the cutting and I also discovered that I bought an overcast foot as part of a set, just didn't know what it was! Maybe I'll start off small that way, before I splurge on another gadget that I don't have room for. Thanks and I'll convince myself to go on Facebook and join the group
Hi Deby are these machines very good I had read reviews most say they are brilliant some say not I am a single mum of three on benefits I have been saving for almost a year now I recently inherited lots of fabric I want to make some clothes for my children I don't want to waste my money I was an industrial overlocker for 20 yrs I would dearly love an industrial one but they are so expensive and I don't have the room
Jules Shultz I've only had it since Christmas but been delighted with it. I can't compare it to others, especially industrial machines since I've never used one, but I'm assuming its the most popular serger on the market for a reason.
HI Elizabeth, as you can see this video is very old, I (Mayra) bought so-sew-easy.com and all the media with it from her in late 2015, since early 2016 Debbie has not been with soseweasy, not sure about acrylic pouring....kind regards,
Thank you for great video. I am also using the same lock sewing machine with you. Do you have a tutorial video of the exchange of needles Pls .... Thank you again
+JHONATTANFF - could you please do a demo then?? I am just about to thread my machine for the first time but the sew easy seems less frightening to me.
‼️❤️Thank you ❤️‼️ I just got my serger this week and your video is great for me , need to learn my serger💕💕‼️
What a great trick! I just purchased this machine and learnt how to thread it but this is incredibly helpful for quick colour changes! ❤️
Excellent tutorial- thank you! I bought my first serger recently and wanted to change the thread. I was going to follow the owner's manual but then I found this video and I was reminded about the quick method. I had not used a serger in so long I had forgotten about that method.
I just got my new Brother 1034D and your videos have been a God-send, especially the threading video. Thank you!!
This has got to be the best video ever for learning how to thread a serger. Thank you so much.
This is exactly what I need. This tutorial is really clear and ao much more helpful than the Brother CD. I thought I would be serging in white forever more, so thank you!

WOW this is so cool! I own the same serger and I never use it because I don't know how to thread it. but guess what? I am going to use it now!!! :) thank you so much
Great idea, I'm thinking you got to be a genius to work a serger. I have one and I'm scared to take it out of the box!!

What a relief. Simplified beautifully.
