I wore out so many eight-tracks in my day. Back then, a good, long day at the beach would ruin an eight-track....car doors open and blasting an album, on repeat, for hours. We never just bought an album once. We listened to it until the tape wore out and we would go buy it again. Went through a lot of car batteries too, lol.

This song came out in the mid 70s, and it is still one of their most played songs on the radio. So I am sure you might have heard it at least a few times at some point in your life, even if you weren't paying attention too closely. Plus, seeing that you're a gamer, you might know this one from Guitar Hero. I'm not much into gaming, but a good friend of mine that is said this song from Boston is one of the most popular songs from the game.
Personally, I absolutely love the guitar work on this song. I love the smooth rythmic sounds that Boston always seems to find. Mostly though, it's Brad Delp (RIP). It's easy to hear why he is referred to as the "Golden voice of Rock and Roll". Being able to hit and hold those high notes so effortlessly is nothing short of amazing!

It seems as you mentioned that a lot of businesses today borrow heavily from classic rock to further their business needs in media. The flip counterpoint to this is a really old song by the easy listening duo "The Carpenters" (late 60s, early 70s) made a fortune on their hit "We've only Just Begun". That song was used a lot by couples getting married back then. Richard Carpenter actually wrote that entire song based on a bank commercial jingle. The exact opposite of what you are now discovering with classic rock songs now being used as business jingles...

I'd be surprised if you'd never actually heard this. It's been all over radio & TV & movies since the late '70s. It's one of the most-played songs on classic rock radio. It's the opening track to their first album, which was initially released in 1976 & hardly anyone noticed...when it was re-released in 1978, at the peak of the disco era, it became one of the year's bestselling albums. I would recommend you check out "Don't Look Back", the title track from their 2nd album, next. As for the cover, it's both a guitar AND a spaceship.

For your first experience with Boston, you chose a very dynamic track with many transitions and a couple of surprises.
Now you have reacted to the first track on side-one of the first album. Foreplay/Longtime is the third. I will challenge you to do every song on this first album. It stood as the best selling debut album for twenty years, and every track, even those that weren't released as singles, gets played on classic rock radio stations. I'm among the group of audio-files that consider this one of the very few "perfect" albums, for that reason.
Many call this one song, the definitive Boston song for anyone who has never heard Boston before. The unique sounds you heard and spoke about in the previous reaction were created by the lead guitar player. He didn't even start playing guitar until age 22. He wanted to make the song sound the way he wanted it, so he built a small studio in the basement of the apartment he was living at the time. With the exception of the vocals, he wrote them all, and played every instrument. The band on the album were those who performed it when they played live shows. The record producers wanted him to record everything again in their studio. He was firm about it, but there was one more song, that was written by the singer, that was recorded in that California studio. It's good, but doesn't quite have that authentic Boston sound.
You said in the other reaction how you heard "20,000 instruments." good catch. Here's just an example of it.
The intro of this song sounds like just one acoustic guitar. It's actually twin 12 string acoustics in both left and right channel (recorded twice for each) plus a "clean" electric guitar in the center. Clean means that it didn't go through any special amplifiers or other devices to alter the actual sound the guitar makes. 12 Strings in a way are like two guitars each, because each pair of strings is the same note, but one is an octave higher, making it sound like two acoustics in each side plus the clean electric.
Brad's voice of course sings all the words, and all the backups on the albums, and live performances, the other band members sing backup. In addition to that, Brad's voice is used as its own musical instrument, singing along with the lead electric in harmony, no words, just sound, creating a very unique sound.
There is a video made of a professional musician in his studio where he takes this song apart, each little piece, and explains just how the song was made, and what makes it great. He did one other Boston song, and I'll give you a link if you ask.
There are also a video of Tom explaining in a few minutes, in his persona studio how the Boston sound came to be.
A Japanese company interviewed him and goes much further into the Boston sound. Both are great videos.

Those are spaceships and guitars, but did you also notice the city skylines inside the domes on the top (presumably meant to be Boston, though as a longtine resident of Boston, the skylines are merely suggestive of Boston -- artistic license).

Yes jay you were right👍, Boston's classic "More than a feeling" it was used in a 2014 commercial for yogurt. The Connection? Yoplait's latest flavor is Boston Cream pie lite, "At 90 calories, it is so good..when you want More than a Feeling touts the tagline as cartoon swirls of yogurt colorfully circle the screen. 👍Ronny

Great guitar riffs is this classic about love, lost, and regret. The band's founder Tom Scholz was a perfectionist which led him to a life of strife and be litigation but throughout all that turmoil Boston emerges as one of the greatest rock bands and sold over 75 million albums worldwide.

Jayy, this song is about we associate our personal experiences with the music we hear at the time. The songwriter (Tom Scholz) tells us how he woke up, turned on the radio, and a familiar song is playing that brings up his memories of the breakup with an ex-girlfriend named Mary Ann. The song he's hearing reminds him of his feelings as he watched her walk away.
I think the vocals and guitar arrangement are executed so well that people don't think about the lyrics much. This is an iconic song of the Classic Rock era of the 1970s, which is why most people are familiar with the chorus section. Their debut album, released in 1976, has 8 songs (including this one), and all 8 still today get ample play on Rock radio stations. Next, from that same album, you need to listen to "Hitch a Ride", "Smokin'", and "Peace of Mind".

You've got it right both ways about the album cover.
    It's Spaceships shaped like Guitars.
