Martial arts give us the opportunity to climb out of our darkest descents, and then it sends us soaring upward.
That’s what this video series is about, and I’m so excited to share with you Episode 1 of Legendary Striking.
All of you hold a special place to my heart, and with mental health issues at an all time high around the world, this is for all of you.
Martial arts has brought us peace and made our struggles more tolerable.
It is only through martial arts that I am able to draw parallels to psychology and philosophy.
At the heart of it, this is what I want Legendary Striking to enable: seeing more beauty in martial arts (through technique / history) and transforming the life of a martial artist (through psychology / philosophy).
The Meaning of Striking Breakdowns: I’m often asked what my logo means…
The etymology of 靜 is made up of two words: 青 means “youthful”, and with it usually comes immaturity and a lack of wisdom. 爭 means “to war”, to fight for, to contend, to struggle, and to strive.
When combined, 靜 itself can mean stillness, calm, quiet, peaceful, and tranquil. That’s what martial arts has meant for me.
Through my struggles, martial arts has been a vehicle for maturity and anti-fragility.
It has helped unleash more of my potential, and it continues to do so in ways I could never have imagined.
Martial arts has brought me my most treasured connections and it continues to give me peace. By creating content in martial arts, I’m hoping that it does the same for you.

I’m 43 now but I have so many health problems now I have not been to class in months. I wish you a safe but challenging journey. I only say challenging so that your progress is not only successful (whatever that is to you) but also consistent. Be safe WARRIOR.

My mother died in March and I went to the darkest recesses of my mind. Crippling depression from the moment I woke up to the moment I went to sleep. She was a badass marine that passed down her warrior spirit and her values of integrity, determination, and courage to me. As I began to meditate on many of the lessons she taught me throughout her life, I became more motivated to return to my muay thai training as an outlet for a lot of the emotional energy that's been pent up within me. I've been training in martial arts for 14 years, not simply because it's fun or because I meet so many amazing people. It's because every time I finish a training session or a fight that I had been preparing months for, I feel an overwhelming sense of purpose. It gives me the drive to keep pushing even when it feels like my entire world is collapsing. It helps me keep the spirit of my mother alive because I am connecting to the same essence that she connected to in order to give me a better life than she had. Thank you, mom. And thank you Lawrence Kenshin for this beautifully made video. ❤

Totally understand how you feel, I lost my mother at age 10 due to cancer & having a younger brother to look after, as my father worked long hours.
Martial Arts and Sports in general gave me the mental and physical strength to not only strive but thrive in life. I still miss her every day but Instead of focusing on the negative feelings on her passing, I focus on the positive feelings we had together for those short few years.
As in life there are only two certainty’s: death and taxes and so over the years the pain has been replaced with acceptance as you can’t fight against the natural order of the world, as what is will eventually come to pass

I'll admit I first studied martial arts so I didn't get my ass kicked but as time went on I gained alot of things friends, rivals, even a brother and made it my goal to constantly improve so I can protect those who can't protect themselves now some people will be like "This guy watches way too much anime" but I don't care anime specifically martial arts anime can instill into someone the importance of constant training and hard work to hone your skills. Now out of all philosophies in martial arts one sticks by me greatly "Your fists never lie" it means the truest form of communication is from challenging your opponent to a good fight a person's true intentions come from how he throws his fists hearing it sounded but it stuck by me for some reason and I never looked back

I started training in Kung Fu when I was 14, at which point, I was in a very bad place of mind. I convinced myself I was a loser, that I would never be successful. But after I started training, that changed completely. Everything there, the students, training methods, and especially my Shifu, helped me overcome that mindset and helped me realize that my fate was not set in stone. It was their that I really started to understand that things I looked down on, like the concepts of community, family, and belonging were things that could help instead of hurt. I owe everything I am and who I am to my Shifu. And I want to teach martial arts and help people the same way I was helped. Also, like the person speaking in this video, study psychology and see a correlation between the two. So I intend to combine the 2 practices into one

I haven't started my MA journey yet, but just doing some shadow boxing it started to effect my mind. You just feel like you can stand up to anyone. With how more peaceful people have gotten as well there's nothing to fear of an attack until it comes. MA will make you a better person. I used to spite people a lot more when I was younger, but not anymore. I see people much more frail and weaker than me therefore I don't feel like I have to prove anything to them and in fact can take care of them.

Jackie Chan were intruiging whilst western heroes shooting guns and driving cars did nothing for me. Hand to hand combat has touched me since I was too young to know what that means. Some of us definitely are born to be martial artists.

Why I’m anxious? i figured out that i need to learn how to fight and i started shadow kickboxing that one thing changed a lot and i decided to go for kickboxing and judo for a start which me luck and i hope everyone can find them true self and spirit of the warrior as every man should be

I attribute taekwondo and Krav Maga with pulling me out of one of the lowest, darkest moments of my life after a breakup of 9 years. I’ve always done personal development work so I went straight to inner child Lars and asked him what he wanted-he wanted to do martial arts. I went to every single facility in my city knowing that one of them, when I stepped in, would feel like home. It was literally the last facility. I walked in, watched 2 mins and signed paperwork and got on the floor. I haven’t turned back sense. When I don’t go to class, I can tell mentally. No one really gets that this isn’t a hobby for me; this is a lifestyle. It’s given me more than I’ve ever known. And introduced me to some amazing people. I’ve competed without being a competitive person. I’ve sparred and hate to fight. And every time, what I’ve called The Bear, comes alive and gets fulfilled.

Martial arts allow us to reclaim some aspect of our humanity that is somewhat lost in modern society. Our ancestors survived a much harsher world, they were optimized to face many dangers from predators, natural disasters, to the threat of other humans. Every man in the tribe or village better learn to fight because in low technology battles, numbers mattered greatly. Your reputation and social status was determined by your reliability in battle which proves your commitment to the protection of the tribe.
If you want to keep a good standing in the community, you also had the obligation to defend your honor when your reputation is threatened. Even up to the modern era, duels were very common in many human societies. Of course, it such a society, every one must be ready at any point to fight. From David and Goliath, Miyamoto Musashi to Andrew Jackson, this is how we use to be.
