  • This a a very graphic video, and I am warning you now to not watch it if it will upset you. I only edited this down for folks who believe they want to see what happened, but seriously ask yourself if you really want to.
The bear has been confirmed as 402, the most prolific mama bear on the river. We don’t know why the bear fight started; we do know that 469 has been known to guard caches of dead bears before. We do not know if he was responsible for the death of that one, which was taken over by a different and more aggressive bear, Lurch. While not unheard of, it is unusual for us to witness this type of thing at Brooks River. I’ve been watching on and off for the last ten years and have never seen this type of activity before.
It’s important to note that bears are apex predators. And if you need a break from the cameras, no matter what, you should feel free to take one.
This is a safe space to express your feelings about what happened. It’s heartbreaking and stressful so please feel free to comment below, even if you have not seen the video. Again, ask yourself if you really want to watch.

That's a little scary for me, as I was there a few days ago. I walked along the beach where 469 dragged 402. Fellow Brooks Camp visitors walked around that area. That would have been a terrifying scene.
It was relayed to me while I was there that a fellow Brooks Camp visitor observed a large male who was very intolerant towards people hanging out by the spit near the industrial area. When he realized this bear's disposition he left the area. Soon after, the bear began to stalk the Brooks Camp visitor as if to eat for prey. The Brooks Camp visitor had been stalked by a bear before in a different part of Alaska and knew the feeling.
I have been to Brooks River before in years where there was more salmon, and this year there was very little salmon. The bears did not appear as fat or as tolerant as in previous years. In my opinion, they seemed annoyed at the lack of fish and annoyed and frustrated in general.
I am not a biologist, just a viewer of the bear cams, a visitor of Brooks Camp, and an observer of bear behavior.

@@ljsong1 that is frightening and probably was 469 - he hasn’t been seen anywhere else on the river that I know of. When he was much younger, he fished all over, including the falls, but not much since I’ve been watching. There is fish in the lower river, but not as much as in years past. I appreciate your sharing your experience, it’s interesting and answers a question for sure about his disposition in the days prior to the attack.

Occam's razor is what I rely on when conceptualizing these kinds of situations (least assumptions). 469 was old, he saw an opportunity and he went for it. On land he most likely would not have prevailed, but in the river, as long as he could get her under water, he had a shot - he took it and drowned her.
Today's experience with 402 reminded me of a poem my mom wrote long long ago, about the nature of life.
    The way of life
As I looked at the leaves
    on the ground today,
    glance up at bare trees
    what a pity to say,
    for such beauty to leave
    but trees have to obey,
    to the nature of life
    in a very sad way

I watched the long version today and it is tough to see and even harder for me to understand so I've been trying to process Please bear with my stream of consciousness( see what I did there). From what I can tell, this type of cannibalism is called conspecific strife- one adult male kills and eats another adult bear. What made 469 target 402 specifically is something I'd like to know. Was it her age? Does 469 have history with her? Was it a confrontation that triggered 469 to become predatory or had he been stalking her like any other prey animal? While cannibalism among bears is a known behavior, the why is perplexing especially when it appears there are still quite a few salmon around. Thanks for giving me the space to get all this out. All I can conclude is that if a boar brown bear decides you're on the menu, there aren't many ways to stop him.

An adult male preying on an adult female especially at this time of year is unheard of and is an extremely rare to non-existent event seldom if ever observed before. We have recorded males digging females out of dens during late winter in the subarctic, but in that area food resources are no where as abundant or rich as on the coast. The other complicating factor is 469's advanced age. He is one of, if not, the oldest bear in the area. Old males have been known to become more desperate and risk taking in acquiring food.

It used to happen on most low salmon years - I’m traveling or I’d look it up but for a few years in a row (pre-cams), Lurch would invariably end up caching the carcass of another adult. Low salmon years mean bears need other sources of energy for winter.

    • @matthirt7863
      @matthirt7863 10 дней назад

Bears are opportunistic feeders; there is nothing unusual about 469's behavior and it's quite likely this happens a lot more frequently out there (especially in the fall) than we think. The cams on the Brooks River give us only a tiny snippet of a view of what happens in this huge park...bears on the river are usually well fed by the salmon, but this is often not the case elsewhere. For bears, calories are calories, and without them they won't survive hibernation.
Both of these animals are well past the average life span of bears in Katmai; one died so the other can maybe make it another year or two in this wonderful but harsh wilderness.

Usually I’m 100% against interference and actively speak against people asking for rangers to interfere with the natural cycle in Katmai. But this time I begin to question if this is actually more harmful for the ecosystem.
Yes, bears can kill each other, and yes they eat each other. But based on what I’ve read 469 seems to have made this a habit. He seems too aggressive for a bear in my opinion. He’s not underweight. Clearly. You can just look at how small his hind legs look due to fat buildup and realize immediately he was not suffering from starvation. This bear just isn’t opposed to taking anyone and anything for food. This is, and I hate to say the term because it has horrible connotations, but a potential man eater. All predators are “man eaters.” But many predators show little care to have humans as a part of their diet and most predators are more prone to run than to fight as many of us are aware of now. 469 seems willing, and almost desiring to hunt uncommon prey, and to be extremely aggressive in general. 402 had years of life left, and assuming some other aspect of nature didn’t do her in, she’d have provided to the balance of the ecosystem for YEARS by killing deer, eating berries and other plants and of course our salmon runs. Now, all of that balance has been stopped short for…another meal for a fatty I’m afraid to say.
Again. I’m not an expert, and if Katmai rangers see this as acceptable I won’t oppose. But where I’m looking at it from, this seems like a waste of a bears life to me, and a sign that this may become more common the longer 469 remains a returning member of brooks falls bears.
