I have a 705 I go out portable quite a lot with, Would you recommend the 891 in 2023 for portable work? Some times it would be nice to have a little more power
The 891 is a really fantastic rig and a reasonable price point. I'd recommend the 891+ ldg rt-100 if you'll need a tuner. The 891 can control the rt-100 on atas mode.
@@HamRadioNewb Thanks for the quick reply! I'm just trying to really decide if its worth the extra power over the 10w with my external battery on the 705.. Then again is there such a thing as too many radios. Great video btw cheers!
Thanks for the video! What antenna did you use for wfd? The wolf river coils vertical? If so, what did you use as the main radiating element, and how many counterpoise/radials do you typically run?
I ran a dipole and the wrc, the wrc used 6 33' radials. Depending on the band I may set up more sometimes. I try to stick to the 2 full wavelengths rule for radials. I used the 17ft whip.
@@HamRadioNewb Thanks for your response! I'm conflicted between using my homemade base loaded vertical and end fed half wave...both use the same telescoping pole. All of my on-air tests have used 8 30ft radials with the vertical...they are a pain to deploy. Perhaps I should consider using fewer radials- many operators have success with 3 radials (and the coax shield as the 4th). Maybe the dB loss going from 8 to 3 wouldn't actually be as bad as I imagine lol
@@daveN2MXX DX Commander has a good video showing the difference, 2 full wavelengths should be the minimum in most cases. You can definitely succeed with less though!! Im looking at getting the "Otophone" from WRC soon too. I think that will bring the convenience and quick set up with the performance as well. I couldn't stand to pay for the buddipole version!

out in the woods in Ma. used a TS-480 homebrew 1/4 wave vertical w/radials big heavy battery and a blanket cuz it was cold
Very cool! Glad you were able to get out in the woods to operate! For me its more enjoyable in the field
