- I do not recommend taking a jet ski on this river; if you do... you assume the risk of accident or ski damage! There are plenty of other places to explore that are not this hazardous! We met when I was taking my 38 ft house boat on the ocklawaha river, from little Lake Harris to the Saint John’s . I cleared for weeks to get thru there. But that’s been 2 years now.. tobacco cabbage was a big issue we motored thru it for a mile. What a nightmare of a river, good documentary as always..
Now let me get this right; you took a 38' houseboat from Lake Harris through to the St Johns... you have to tell more of that story......!
Yes sir! On a 135 mile trip from Astutula to Silverglen on Lake George. Every weekend for a month to get Thru the 3 locks Haines creek, moss bluff, and waited a couple weeks to go thru the big Buckman lock(because it was broken down for sensor failure) Definitely one of the most craziest /sketchy things we have done. We went in that alligator, gar fish, waters to cut log by hand with a handsaw snorkel and mask,(not that you can see more than 4 inches into that water). We did that a bunch and with no injuries and more impressively no fights! Thank God for good/crazy/competent friends that helped. because there is nothing out there or close by if anything bad happens, And the Rodman reserve is boat killer, the thought of swimming across that if we sank,or stuck in the vegetation was not on my bucket list. especially after shining the flashlight at night. Those waters are infested with BIG Gators and Gars. But the whole experience has left me more intrigued about the river system and can’t wait til they drain it next to experience it again(smaller boat for sure). Trip was July -August 2022. I thought you and 2 others on jet skis stopped and talked to us on your way back.
@@davidlokey1094 It was not us... I am OLD but not THAT old! I would remember that - that is one hell of a story! Wow, that ones take the cake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I live in Ocklawaha great to see the river its beautiful
It is beautiful… I have a love hate relationship with it… I have a new video in the hopper where I actually complete it all to Rodman Reservoir! A few weeks out!
Always love watching your videos one might able to ride with you
I appreciate those comments… glad someone is enjoying them… !! Bob
Looks like an insane ride. I love the heavy guitar music you chose for it
It is a bit crazy… have you been branching out? Thanks for watching!
Have you tried entering the ocklawaha where it connects to the St Johns? I'm thinking about giving that a try this summer but I have no idea what it looks like in person
Thanks for watching … Yes this video shows it… there are plenty of hazards and two places where you have to take a side trail around what looks like open river but those two places have huge submerged trees just below the waterline that you must not hit. This video may help: ruclips.net/video/-L2-SiL1lds/видео.htmlsi=5hC0x_xfx5AhcJXt
Danny to the rescue!
Did he rescue me? hahahhahahahahaha Is this Kate or Daniel?
happy thanksgiving!! 🦃👍🏼
Same to you! Hope you had a good day! Bob
10:30 Those fish were trying to jump onboard for a ride!
Man!!! You ain't lived til you been on that river at night.
Hahahahha…. Yes thank goodness I have not…. I would not even want to go to Fort McCoy after dark! Hahahaha
That is indeed a river with many challenges, and many situations in which to sustain significant damage to the jet ski. I recently saw in a documentary that people want to clean up the half-sunken or abandoned boats in some areas of Florida. By the way, thanks for the website about "Stilt Houses" in Florida that you sent last time. Was very educational.
Frank: There are half sunken boats in Florida Rivers, the Gulf, and intercoastal waters ways you see a lot. I wish there would be an effort to salvage or remove these vessels from the water. I had not seen this speedboat sunk there before but I think it has been well over 18 months since last on that river. Thanks for watching and commenting... Bob
Also glad you like the stilt house background.
I ride in the Vancouver area of Canada and we have a couple of local lakes that are flooded dam reservoirs with millions of trees just left standing out of the water and some just below the surface you can hit easily. We also can have endless logs out in the ocean and in some of the lakes, especially when there has been heavy rain and they get washed out into the water. I hit logs all the time but I almost never ride wide open unless I have scouted the area first so I have never cracked my hull. I have also heard that sound at 5:45 several times and was fortunate to have whatever was stuck pop out every time after a few seconds. One of my worst fears is to have a rope or some kind of plastic sucked into my impeller when I am out riding by myself.
That is also probably my worst fear - getting a rope sucked up around the shaft.... It would darn near impossible for me to clear in the water... Yes river riding is definitely the most dangerous in my opinion for the reasons you pointed out. Thanks for watching and sharing your experiences... Unfortunately I am not done with that river yet... :-/
What do you wear to keep warm during the cooler season?
I wear a neoprene top with that red Gore Windstopper Jacket over that with neoprene gloves and a balaclava. I have also worn a wool ski hat. I also wear a wetsuit on really cold days where I will be getting wet. See:

Not the best feeling when you're out in the middle of nowhere and your engine starts making weird noises.. glad that stick cleared itself
Yes it was a bad feeling to see the intake grate completely clear when we rolled ski. You know then something is in the impellar! thanks for watching and commentng!
Sorry you had troubles...
No significant troubles just challenges… thanks for watching!
Is the Ocklawaha pretty clear when heading south from the silver River? We're putting in at Ray Wayside in the morning.
I saw your FB post but declined to comment as I do not know current water conditions. River conditions change with the water levels weekly… a few weeks after we went down this river from the lock a friend put a $3000 insurance claim hole in his Waverunner when he hit a tree in the river at speed between the Silver River and the lock. It’s all about water levels and any new tree fall….I would be careful.
Hardly any subjective dangers in the other side of the lock. I will also say I would not turn north at the Ocklawaha River unless you are a very experienced jet ski adventurer. Your friends will not appreciate unhappy outcomes if you hit a tree. Much better to do the Harris Chain and do the lock over to Lake Griffin. That’s my two cents. Bob
We're good about taking it easy til we know better. No speed demons or anything. def aiming for south.
Have fun let me know how it goes … the Moss Bluff lock has one of the most dramatic drops in Florida at 31’!
Everything went great with the ride. We were heading the opposite direction of a couple of groups that had come from the South, so we asked about the river being clear. The lock was cool too go through. Next trip we'll try to head farther south.
That is great news, farther south you can go through another smaller lock and do the Harris Chain of Lakes …. A remarkable chain with the Dora Canal. Best Lakes in Florida to Jet Ski? - Harris Chain of Lakes on Yamaha FX/VX Waverunners!

Just wondering why you didn't use the ramp on the north side of Moss Bluff. You didn't needed to go through the lock.
As we planned the trip we decided the South side was the lowest stress ramp and best for us. North side is steep and long....
@@BobBroeking yes it is, especially at current water levels
I love riding that river, but the water is way too low right now. I'll stick to the Withlacoochee River because I know where the rocks are.
The water was high when we went, but it was a few weeks ago...probably just right...hear a gentleman hit a log/tree at 40MPH between Silver River and Moss Bluff that pretty much destroyed his hull in the last week...
I heard about that also. I was there last week but stayed on the south side of the lock.
@@Seadoo-Scotty really no reason to take a boat north from there; you can put down in at Silver river like you and I did if you want to up Silver river; agree
@BobBroeking I definitely wouldn't take my boat there unless water rises 5 feet. I was on a jetski last week, but we were running out of daylight and turned around before Moss Bluff.
Fog on the water and tree stumps, seems like a sketchy ride to me. 😬
Yes you will see in the video written description i do NOT recommend this river for Jet Skiing; just too many risks.
That stick is why i prefer stainless steel wear rings over plastic. I've had many sticks spit out thst would have left me stranded with plastic.
Seadoo or Yamaha?
@BobBroeking only seadoo uses plastic, but I recommend switching to SS.
Another awesome video but just… OMG! no, NO, NO! I would have noped out of that ride so fast it would make your head spin. Er, unless I needed a new ski then because I would have found every stump. Correct me if I’m wrong, but when you’re zipping up your ski vest @7:35 - there’s either a large 🐊 or a log floating behind you, I’d probably say the former!
Thanks for watching.... I think that is a stick..... You will see once I connect these dots I will not be back on this river again! Do you have any great route to ski down there or do you need more time? I am going to be down in that area in late Dec
@@BobBroeking - Sanibel is nice. You’ve already done coast to coast. My son tells me 10,000 Isles is nice as is Keywaydin Island near Naples. And I’ll tell ya, Gasparilla Island / Boca Grande looks great. Let me know when you’re coming down - you have my email I believe, if not, comment back and I’ll get in touch. Got dates?

@@BobBroeking - next time then 🙂 - it’s all good, but I’ll be flying out Monday AM and back Tuesday night so won’t be available
I would love to go on an adventure with you. I live in Winter garden Florida usually off on Monday. If you would invite me, I have a 2022 Sea-Doo fish pro
William: I am slowing down in 2024 but if the opportunity presents itself I will let you know. I usually just go solo or with the 3-4 folks I have been skiing with for the last 4 years. Thanks for watching…. Going back to that river Thursday. Bob
