fun fact, when this episode first aired it was seen by 10.6 million people, myself among them, not the highest viewing figures for doctor who but for the very first time, Doctor Who was the most watched show the week it aired
Oh damn, that's such a big number! Know it's had bigger in the past, but 10+ million is still insane to me, and it being the most watched show that week is great!
I remember it well: everyone was talking about that cliffhanger and this episode that week. Everyone. It was a proper watercooler moment for the nation. For one brilliant week, Doctor Who was the most talked about thing in the nation.
This episode originally had an ending where the villains of the next episode surprised the Doctor in the TARDIS at the end. THANK GOD that wasn’t used. The ending works perfect as it is (plus the way that deleted scene was shot was just kinda silly.)
Yes, this was a perfect ending. The other would not have worked at all. It was fine for other seasons, to keep people watching, but no one is tuning out this late in the game... They will stick around for the regeneration.
When looking for thumbnail pics I came across that alternate ending and genuinley bust out laughing when they slowly rose up behind him at the end 😂😂😂 This one was so much better!! Works amazing, and with everything else at play just makes more sense on leaving it with the Doctor being alone
@@MatthewGCWReacts It gets even better/worse if you imagine how the Doctor might have killed them immediately in the opening scene of the following episode and then just left the TARDIS to enjoy the Christmas festivities.
I waqs coming here to bring it up, to be fair to the footage, presumably there would have been some kind of teleportation effect to bring the villains into the scene, what's been seen online is raw footage, and raw footage rarely goes well. That being said yeah, having allready had a sharp turn from the triumphant moment of bringing Earth home, to the bittersweet parting of Rose and the Doctor, to the pure tragedy of Donna's fate, another turn to what would likely be a somewhat comedic sequel hook would've been a turn too far.
Bernard Cribbins' sad face is so so sad. Wilfred is the king of characters so seeing him sad is the most sad This episode swings so hard from fun and joy to utter tragedy. Everyone being together and the Doctor Donna and the spinning Daleks is so fun. I knew you would be very excited to see K9 turning up in there too. Then they just smack you with that ending. Sure Donna is still alive but seeing her beg to not lose her memory and go back to who she was before is so sad. I did appreciate the Doctor telling her mum off a little for her attitude towards Donna sometimes
Literally, like his face there was enough to get the tears going, and that's without his incredible speech! It's such a rollercoaster, like how can it be such a bad state, into elation, into complete lonliness?? Insane. Happy times though with spinny Daleks and THE GOODEST BOYS RETURN 🥳But then Donna's reaction before it happens and The Doctors face as he meets her again when she doesn't even recognise him, just heart breaking. Likes that as well, hopefully going forward she'll appreciate Donna more and make sure she knows how brilliant she is in the Doctor's absence
Can understand that, but really think over the course of the season Catherine Tate proved herself, and Donna proved herself as an incredible character and companion
I was the same. I wasn't in love with the character from her one appearance in The Runaway Bride. Little did I know that she'd become one of my all-time favorite companions.
Which is fair. I took to her quite quick but I think that Catherine Tate is my kind of humour. But glad she got longer to fully show her emotional range too and what she's capable off, incredible companion!
This episode like I said last one, when I first watched it when I was 7 or 8 (honestly can’t remember anymore) it absolutely broke me even tho I had no idea who any of them were, and it still does make me tear up everytime I watch it now. By the way Rose is so happy when she realises Martha knows who she is because it tells her how unlike how the doctor spoke about Sarah Jane to rose in the first couple of seasons, the doctor told everyone about rose, and she sees that.
Can fully get that, 9 year old me would have been a mess too at this. Even 24 year old me is a mess at this 😂 Aww that makes so much sense!! Rose was very worried in School Reunion that the Doc would just eventually leave her and forget her, but to have that reassurance that he never did and still talks about her is lovely for her!

"I decreed 'NO MORE!'" (Spoiler 1!) "Genesis of the Daleks" (1975), where Sarah Jane met Davros, is a very important storyline from classic Who. (Spoiler 2!) Probably worth a reaction, if you have the time.

Having just watched the S5 finale I did really love it too, but think this one beats it for me! Love everyone coming together from 10's past and uniting to stop the ultimate threat!
I love it when shows use costuming to show things. Doctor Who doesn't do it a lot, or at least, doesn't do it as consistently as they did with Donna and Ten. They very much say 'Hey these two share a brain' throughout the season and it's funny until it's not. In every episode besides The Runaway Bride, Planet of the Ood, and Midnight they are matching and those are only exceptions cause Donna is wearing a wedding dress, just a coat, and really isn't in the third and is in a robe the short time she is. Out of 14 episodes, there are those 3, she wears a blazer and suit pants in 3 other episodes, Partners in Crime and the Sontaran 2 parter, in the last 3 episodes she is wearing the long brown leather jacket, Pompeii and Wasp are historicals, and in the Library 2 parter she wears like an undershirt, a shirt, and a vest which I think is a ridiculous amount of layers for them all to be tank tops and the Doctor loves his layers. The only time she doesn't emulate his style in any way with no extenuating circumstances is in The Doctor's Daughter. On the Doctor's side it's more subtle cause he just has the two suits but in every episode, his tie always matches her outfit. Like in Partners, his tie is red and in Pompeii it's purple. Plus, in all three of Ten's seasons, we only see him in his shirtsleeves twice once on the rooftop in Runaway Bride when he gives his suit jacket to Donna and at the end here after he has erased Donna's memories. I feel like it's pretty classic costuming to go 'The emotionally closed off and constipated character wears lots of layers and only takes them off around people who understand them.' He takes his suit jacket off only for Donna and it's at the very beginning of knowing her and at the very end after they have said goodbye.
27:23, Deus ex Machina Donna? And damn it, 9:20, I know there’s a joke to be made there! The Doctor being “attacked” to his “severed” hand. Oh, come on! The oxymoron is just screaming at me.
