Going to these shows was like going to church! Jerry use to take his cut from The JGB tours and split it up and give it to the rest of the band. That's how much he loved playing these shows and with his bandmates. And how he didn't give a shit about money and just wanted to be a good human!

I met Melvin a few years ago in NJ after a show. He was so cool and I was just so happy to thank him and tell him how I saw him with Jerry in '91. Good times.

JGB is very different than the Dead. They are both awesome. When things open up you can still see today’s version of JGB with John K playing Jerry’s part. They are in a word Awesome. Not Jerry but a great show non-the-less.

I was at this show. It was supposed to be a Grateful Dead show, but Brent Mydland had just died and the Dead cancelled, so the JGB filled in the date. All the deadheads were devastated, but the minute Jerry hit the stage and flashed that smile, all the pain melted away.
Garcia Band was a more intimate vibe, especially in the late 80s when "Touch of Grey" brought a stadium sized crowd to the Dead shows. Not better or worse, but definitely some of Jerry's most energetic performances from my Dead years.
I think after Brent died the Dead became more of an obligation and a chore for Jerry, and JGB was a much more relaxed and joyful musical outlet for him.
@@jp-bl5vk I saw the Dead once after Brent died. It was a really great show at the Silverdome in Vegas, April '91 with An Amazing Black Peter and Santana opening. The show was a gift from a Deadhead buddy as I'd just gotten back from the Gulf, and was on leave. After the army, it was straight to college in '92, and I never got to a JGB show again; wish I had, I could see how he'dfind JGB to be a refuge. It is awesome to see folks like Jamel discovering the music. Take care out there.

Bob Dylan is quoted as saying that Jerry was the greatest interpreter of his songs. The Bob Dylan album, Blood On The Tracks, that this song is from, was largely about the tension going on in his marriage at the time.
This was absolutely as good as they ever played this and I saw Garcia band at least 40 times...It was a staple in later years of this iteration of the band. One of Jerry's finest solos ever in its construction and performance; a masterpiece of dynamics, restraint and raw passion burning white hot while making it look effortless and purely joyful. Thanks so much for everything you do. Your open heartedness and joy has inspired me to listen anew to so many songs that I hadcome to take for granted and grown bored of.
Finally!!! I have been trying to get anything from Shoreline Amphitheatre on this channel! This was the real Jerry Garcia Band incarnation that was the same group of people for about 10 years and it was the peak of chemistry. Hopefully there will be more from this show. Jamel talks about them taking us to church. That's totally what the Jerry Garcia Band was all about. We used to call it Jerry Church. Even though they did do gospel songs such as My Sisters and Brothers, or Throw Out Lifeline, there was always an undercurrent of Divine Guidance seemingly more so at the Jerry Garcia Band shows. This night was actually supposed to be a Grateful Dead show but Brent Midland died so those who didn't want a refund were able to use their Grateful Dead tickets for the show. I was there and my friends from my town in Thousand Oaks (Southern California) asked me if I wanted to go with them on the Eastern tour. The next venue was going to be out that way. (The first shows with the new keyboardist Vince Welnick and Bruce Hornsby) I had never been to the East coast for a Grateful Dead show and I told them I would think about it. Then during the show JGB busted out Stop That Train, the Peter Tosh cover. "Stop that train I'm leaving! Stop that train I'm leaving! And it won't be too long whether I'm right or wrong." That settled it. I didn't return to So Cal but went on my first Eastern tour. It was great! Anything from this show is a real gem 💎 because they really didn't film any of the Jerry Garcia Band shows and the joy and the Love 💕 is so apparent among the band members. The smiles and the interplay and overall cohesion is a sight to see. I've been trying to get Jamel to do the Don't Let Go or the My Sisters and Brothers via comments on the videos. Anything from this show is absolutely stellar. Thanks for finally doing a Shoreline Amphitheatre JGB reaction!!!!
Saw Bob Dylan open for the Dead. He was wearing a shiny silver suit. Now that's stylin'!! If I'm not mistaken, this show was supposed to be booked as the Grateful Dead, but Brent just passed away, so JGB filled in instead. Amazing how Jerry could even smile. Melvin helped him through the loss of his good friend.
Backup singer with the finger waves is my godmother Gloria Jones from Oakland California. Gloria did a lot of backup vocals but Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead Band. Jerry left the Acronym JGB to Melvin Seals in his will! Melvin is a brilliant keyboardist!!! Melvin has toured playing Jerry Garcia music since Jerry passed. I’ve seen them many times! I saw Melvin with JGB last year just before COVID kicked in!!! So much fun, can’t wait for them to start touring again! Melvin did a live show a couple of months ago as a live RUclips event I watched!!! 🎶🎼🎵👌👍✌️😎
I can tell you before I hit the stage, be it solo or with a band played a song 100s of times. So, by the time you play it for people live, youve the ease of having the emotional freedom to let loose. Cause your not worried bout actually playing the song, but singing it, enjoying it. When that synergy with the auidence happens, your all locked in, a high like nothing else! Oh man. Thank you so much Jamal. This brings tears to my eyes. I saw the Dead so many times, but catching JGB at the Stone (Palo Alto usually, or Berkeley) was so special. Beyond words. I watched Jackie and Gloria harmonize from just feet away. My favorite bassist was always John Kahn. The memories hurt. But I thank god for for them. Thank you again. Truly.

Haha YES! Now you're getting it. Jerry Garcia Band is such easy listening. And yes, that's the Jerry grin. He was like a sun on the stage and everyone else orbited around him, but what he liked the most was to see the other people shining too. That's Leo at the highest caliber. Melvin Seals on keys there and John Kahn on bass, two people he was very close with. The Dead was the original sound but with these guys he branched out and really explored a bunch of other things. Merl Saunders and Jerry Garcia is another one to look out for, those two really had a magical connection and their covers are all outstanding. He really had a thing for keyboardists which I think is why Brent Mydland's passing hit him so hard. Last thing, when you're finally ready check out Jerry's work with a guy named David Grisman. It's another different take but let me tell you Jerry's folk and country blues really hit hard. Love watching your content, thank you! JGB is perfect Sunday afternoon music.

Had a college friend who was a true Dead Head. They encouraged taping of their performances and my friend had over 50 live Dead tapes. They were the true definition of a "Jam" band.
One of my favorite songs by JGB. Blue = love, regret, what could've/should've, passion to find it again. Bob Dylan wrote great songs, Jerry new how to portray them on stage. That group of musicians/singers were VERY talented. Check out " Keepers of the Flame". His band mates playing those songs after his passing.

This was a very personal song for Dylan, he has often said that it took “ten years to live and two years to write”.
He has a few songs like that. Ballad in Plain D is one for sure.
The Dead was work, JGB was his fun. Love their versions of Tangled.

The backup singers for JGB were Gloria Jones and Jackie LeBranch. Gloria, shorter one on the left, passed away in Feb 2019.
Another Fact Gloria Jones scored a hit in the 60s with the original version of Tainted Love
Donna and Maria Muldaur also did backups for JGB.. in the early days

The show was a gift from a Deadhead buddy as I'd just gotten back from the Gulf, and was on leave. After the army, it was straight to college in '92, and I never got to a JGB show again; wish I had, I could see how he'dfind JGB to be a refuge. It is awesome to see folks like Jamel discovering the music. Take care out there.

Bob Dylan is quoted as saying that Jerry was the greatest interpreter of his songs. The Bob Dylan album, Blood On The Tracks, that this song is from, was largely about the tension going on in his marriage at the time.

This was absolutely as good as they ever played this and I saw Garcia band at least 40 times...It was a staple in later years of this iteration of the band. One of Jerry's finest solos ever in its construction and performance; a masterpiece of dynamics, restraint and raw passion burning white hot while making it look effortless and purely joyful.
Thanks so much for everything you do. Your open heartedness and joy has inspired me to listen anew to so many songs that I hadcome to take for granted and grown bored of.

Finally!!! I have been trying to get anything from Shoreline Amphitheatre on this channel! This was the real Jerry Garcia Band incarnation that was the same group of people for about 10 years and it was the peak of chemistry. Hopefully there will be more from this show. Jamel talks about them taking us to church. That's totally what the Jerry Garcia Band was all about. We used to call it Jerry Church. Even though they did do gospel songs such as My Sisters and Brothers, or Throw Out Lifeline, there was always an undercurrent of Divine Guidance seemingly more so at the Jerry Garcia Band shows. This night was actually supposed to be a Grateful Dead show but Brent Midland died so those who didn't want a refund were able to use their Grateful Dead tickets for the show. I was there and my friends from my town in Thousand Oaks (Southern California) asked me if I wanted to go with them on the Eastern tour. The next venue was going to be out that way. (The first shows with the new keyboardist Vince Welnick and Bruce Hornsby) I had never been to the East coast for a Grateful Dead show and I told them I would think about it. Then during the show JGB busted out Stop That Train, the Peter Tosh cover. "Stop that train I'm leaving! Stop that train I'm leaving! And it won't be too long whether I'm right or wrong." That settled it. I didn't return to So Cal but went on my first Eastern tour. It was great! Anything from this show is a real gem 💎 because they really didn't film any of the Jerry Garcia Band shows and the joy and the Love 💕 is so apparent among the band members. The smiles and the interplay and overall cohesion is a sight to see. I've been trying to get Jamel to do the Don't Let Go or the My Sisters and Brothers via comments on the videos. Anything from this show is absolutely stellar. Thanks for finally doing a Shoreline Amphitheatre JGB reaction!!!!
Saw Bob Dylan open for the Dead. He was wearing a shiny silver suit. Now that's stylin'!!
If I'm not mistaken, this show was supposed to be booked as the Grateful Dead, but Brent just passed away, so JGB filled in instead. Amazing how Jerry could even smile. Melvin helped him through the loss of his good friend.

Backup singer with the finger waves is my godmother Gloria Jones from Oakland California. Gloria did a lot of backup vocals but Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead Band.

Jerry left the Acronym JGB to Melvin Seals in his will! Melvin is a brilliant keyboardist!!! Melvin has toured playing Jerry Garcia music since Jerry passed. I’ve seen them many times! I saw Melvin with JGB last year just before COVID kicked in!!! So much fun, can’t wait for them to start touring again! Melvin did a live show a couple of months ago as a live RUclips event I watched!!! 🎶🎼🎵👌👍✌️😎

Saw JGB once in 87’ and they did this for a sweet encore. Another Dylan song was a highlight - “Forever Young”.
I can tell you before I hit the stage, be it solo or with a band played a song 100s of times. So, by the time you play it for people live, youve the ease of having the emotional freedom to let loose. Cause your not worried bout actually playing the song, but singing it, enjoying it. When that synergy with the auidence happens, your all locked in, a high like nothing else! So love watching you enjoy this! Sharing it for/to folks who would never heard their music!
When the JGB played Milwaukee, my friend Debbie and I did a rare thing and crowd surfed our way to the front row during this song IT WAS SO AWESOME!!!!!!

Oh man. Thank you so much Jamal. This brings tears to my eyes. I saw the Dead so many times, but catching JGB at the Stone (Palo Alto usually, or Berkeley) was so special. Beyond words. I watched Jackie and Gloria harmonize from just feet away. My favorite bassist was always John Kahn. The memories hurt. But I thank god for for them. Thank you again. Truly.

Haha YES! Now you're getting it. Jerry Garcia Band is such easy listening. And yes, that's the Jerry grin. He was like a sun on the stage and everyone else orbited around him, but what he liked the most was to see the other people shining too. That's Leo at the highest caliber.
Melvin Seals on keys there and John Kahn on bass, two people he was very close with. The Dead was the original sound but with these guys he branched out and really explored a bunch of other things.
Merl Saunders and Jerry Garcia is another one to look out for, those two really had a magical connection and their covers are all outstanding. He really had a thing for keyboardists which I think is why Brent Mydland's passing hit him so hard.
Last thing, when you're finally ready check out Jerry's work with a guy named David Grisman. It's another different take but let me tell you Jerry's folk and country blues really hit hard.

Had a college friend who was a true Dead Head. They encouraged taping of their performances and my friend had over 50 live Dead tapes. They were the true definition of a "Jam" band.

Bob Dylan wrote great songs, Jerry new how to portray them on stage. That group of musicians/singers were VERY talented. Check out " Keepers of the Flame". His band mates playing those songs after his passing.
