Alastair’s discussion is as always delightful, solid advice given in a most gentle manner. I recall a ( apocryphal) story about Coltrane, who spent 3hrs playing a bottom Bb on a new sax, and then said he wasn’t going to buy the instrument. The store owner asked why when he’d not played any tune or explored the full range of the sax - and was answered with a if I can’t get on with its low Bb, I’m not going to like the rest of the horn!

Really enjoyed that. Good to know I have been doing the right thing with my pupils. Mostly 😅

Interesting that individual notes can be improved through venting adjustment. Nice to hear the Yanagisawa was a well tuned example!

Solid advice! I recently sold my series III and the guy who bought it wanted a refund saying the horn was out of tune from top to bottom! LOL…clearly he bought the horn without his partner’s permission and needed an out! I refunded him and was able to sell it to someone else…I just wanted to make sure it was enjoyed and didn’t want someone playing it who wouldn’t appreciate it…it was a great horn, but was able to buy my dream horn and needed to sell it…
