According to the chantry the old gods were cast down and imprisoned by the maker for tricking humanity into worshipping them over him. Dumat one of the old gods and the first of the archdemons whispered into the magisters and taught them blood magic and it was him that goaded them into invading the golden/black city
My personal head Canon is thst the maker is the blight itself the very source of it. After all how can you possibly explain how humanity controls the world. Like elves the qunari the dwarves and other races are still much stronger than humans. Yet it's humans who won and stand on top, it was humans who magically got passed Solas's prison and enter the black/golden city. It was humans that first got blighted, it was humans that corrupted thr old gods it was humans that somehow found out how to beat the blight.. The chantry and Templar hate elves, they hate magic and this "maker" God just pops out of no where that God did not exist when the elves ruled. So it all sounds fishy to me
