  • Really cool to get a glimpse of the sights and public life of early 80's Philly, as most of the video footage suggests... Why Fox 29 chose to use much older video instead of more up to date footage is beyond me... Regardless, the Community Update used to air around 2am-3am Monday mornings and then end with The Pledge Of Allegiance. After that, Fox 29 would sign off for a few hours and perform maintenance (I assume)... I'm not sure if they still run. Recorded 1999.
BTW... If anybody has any info about the 2 Jazz songs that were used for the update, please let me know! Thank you!

On trips to Philly in 1999, I loved seeing this. It brough back memories of watching this on cable in the 1980s in the NYC region of NJ.

I used to see the "Community Update" every time I got up or stayed up early in the morning and watched TV 29! This takes me back! Thanks for posting!

WOW, I remember when I originally saw this on TV! I was channel-surfing late at night and suddenly transfixed by the vintage 80's footage and was disappointed when it ended. So glad RUclips can unearth cool obscurities like this. :)

Like seeing stuff like this. Brings me back to my childhood without a care in the world. Knowing that I was up way past my bedtime when I saw this on tv

I wish Fox would bring back the old stylized 29 logo. Keep the Fox 29 branding, but bring back this vintage logo. They're using the stylized logos used by previous owners on other O&Os, don't see why WTXF has to be an exception.

WOW!!! I've been looking for this for ages & could never find it! i even wrote a letter to FOX 29 to see if they had it since it didn't air anymore...lol The reason why the footage is so old is because it began in the mid 80's. They just never updated the footage, until 1987 when they added footage of the then unfinished One Liberty Place at the end of the video. I feel like an old nerd for remembering all of this!

In 1999 they used the same video that I remember watching in the 80s? That’s amazing.

This is the exact recording that I saw last night on my moms recorded tape from 1989. The community updates from TV 29 were really amazing back then. Seeing those different parts from Philly and the announcer talking about upcoming events in the area.

In this COMMUNITY UPDATE, the music is from PAT METHENY, starting out with EVERY SUMMER NIGHT, followed by BETTER DAYS AHEAD off the album, LETTERS FROM HOME.
Since this is from 1999, these pieces only lasted for a short time because I remember hearing the original COMMUNITY UPDATE music back in late 2000.
FOX29 management must've attempted to try something new to spruce up their old 1980's footage from the days of WTAF, and graphics dating back to 1987 immediately after becoming WTXF.

Oh wow! I remember watching this when I was in high school. I would stay up all night & see this before I went to bed & then skip school to sleep the next day. That was in like 1987. Used to visit my grandmother in Philly then, so it brings back memories. Always liked it & wondered how old the footage was & when they quit signing off with this. Now they just show infomercials. Shoulda known it would eventually end up on youtube. Cool!

By 1999, those stations that were still signing off, did so for "technical maintenance." Now these days it's 24/7.

It is Pat Metheny behind this spot, as you already know. I remember the original Community Update have Chuck Mangione's "Chase the Clouds Away" as its earwash. I love that piece..

i would put on Channel 15 the first week of 10/88 and find Our Gang comedies being broadcast, thinking WTXF started airing them. Then I began to notice Turner Network Television's TNT logo in the lower right corner of the screen.

I remember this footage that premiered in late 1983. This aired at 5:45 AM every day and I would tune in to it mostly monday thru friday just before watching New Zoo Revue at 6 AM while in my pre-teen years. I lost WTXF when Turner Network Television was launched on October 1,1988 on my Suburban Cablevision channel line-up. My SC subscription began on March 31,1981 and we had two Philadelphia-based stations,WPHL Channel 17,like on the UHF dial and WTAF Channel 29,which was on SC's channel 15.

For eighteen calendar months(4/87 to 9/88),we had two Fox Stations, WTXF and New York-based WNYW. My mom would watch Married...With Children on Sunday nights on either station.

...This is it? OH, that's another Philly Triumph. I remember it being cold snuggling in my blanket watching this hoping school would be canceled for any reason?
When television would shut down for shift change I would some days anticipating this Bulletin...I don't know why though??? I would never talk about my love for this at school, like I would Casper the friendly Ghost: the juggling bear episode most popular amongst 3rd and 4th graders...any way you all should go tell everyone to watch this so they'll bring back, yea, see??
