That was the idea...it’s such a well known pedal and it’s known for a really particular sound...but it has other sounds in it that are really great too! And we have nothing against that one sound but we wanted to show that there is a lot more to these pedals!!
I have one .. uses from 2002.. My friend gave to me.. He got since '98.. Run into a crunchy Marshall ,with mid cranked up.. fine and tweak the bass & high eq from Hm-2.. cranked the level and very minimal gain.. It roars!!! Still on my board until now.. What a bless..
As you said both Metal Zone and Hyper Metal came out about the same year I believe, while the Metal Zone aimed to be a modern metal pedal the HM-3 was closer to a Fuzz. Anyway the HM-2 is still number 1.
Thanks for doing this shootout guys! The Hyper Metal was my first ever effects pedal back in the 90s. I chose the Hyper Metal over the Metal Zone at the time. Much prefer the Hyper Metal. I haven’t tried a an HM-2 yet, but it’s on my wish list. Both great distortion pedals and very versatile. Cheers!
Thank you Ryan...I found the HM-2 wasn't what I thought it would be when I first got it...it doesn't have a huge amount of gain and the EQ is really weird...but it really grew on me...but yeah I'm with you...the HM3 is probably still my favourite out of all the Boss Metal pedals...and its massively underrated and you can still buy it for a 'normal' price!!
The HM-3 was my first pedal. I got it in the 90s, but it broke after having it only a few years. In 2003, the drummer in our alternative/grunge band when i showed it to him noticed it was a broken wire and was able to fix it, and I started using it again. It is still my go-to pedal to this day. I wouldn't consider the hm-3 to be a fuzz pedal, really, but more of a distortion. I own a boss FZ-2 hyper fuzz pedal. If you're interested in a fuzz pedal, check it out it's so much fuzz...
Thanks for the video! The HM-2 is getting stupidly expensive but the HM-3 is still affordable, a very good tip for heavy tones! The idea to demo pedals for other styles that they were meant for is really cool. Could you maybe do something along those lines with fuzzes, like low gain fuzzes? Keep on the great work!
Thank you Wilfried...yeah I am wanting to do more videos like that...I've always had a bit of a soft spot for metal pedals without ever really playing metal - not sure why...but there could be more videos like that coming!!
When I first started playing in bands in the early 90s my setup was the HM-2 > PQ-4 > Marshall JCM800 for a killer thrash sound, I tried the HM-3 but it just didn't cut it for me. Great video.
HM-2 was my elder brother's pedal. I still remember that when my brother was testing the pedal for the first time , He really disappointed on pedal ... and said " How the hell I can get the sound of judas priest from this damn pedal ! " what a beautiful days.... :-) HM-3. I went to a guitar shop to buy MT-2 the staff with long hair in cheesy jacket told me REALLY seriously, "hey kid...fxxk Mt-2 , It will make your guitar sound and playing fake. don't fool yourself. I suggest you HM-3 though but best way is buying marshall " HM-3 sound was great to me I could play all day with it. Great video as always thanks Alex , Gabor.
Thanks choi dh...yeah the HM-2 is not what you think...or at least what I thought it would be when I first got it...but there are a lot of great sounds in it once you play around with it! The HM-3 is such an overlooked pedal in my opinion...I really rate it very highly, but it was always in the shadow of the Metal Zone - which is a really cool pedal too!! Hope you’re well mate Gabor
I always think of My Bloody Valentine - Belinda Butcher's set up at least, employs the HM-2. I've used an Arion clone for very similar sounds - nice wash but still definition in the picking, if even just the quick compressed thud of the picking attacks.
@@TSFAHTPS it has a much fatter bass response (I have even rolled off the bass with an eq after it, since it got so boomy), but essentially it is super close in sound, and I could dial in an MBV tone straight away. Plus now the Boss Waza version on its way...
I like both pedals quite a bit, and they definitely are more versatile than you'd think. The real star of the video, though, is the Fano. The pickups sound amazing. I'm really falling for that guitar...
Hey Randy...the Fano is a GREAT guitar...I can't stop playing it...the pickups are really hot - I plugged it into my Marshall Origin the other day and it just sounded glorious with the amp cranked!! I would love to try some more of their stuff...hopefully one day!!
Sounds fun! I hadn't seen a lot about them before, but they seem like a really great brand. I've been checking out the Fano website, and wishing I could win the lottery...
I’m glad you like the sound - we mention the signal chain at 0:55 - the guitars go through the pedals into an Amp Switcher (which doesn’t colour the sound of the guitars) the Amp selected was a Ceriatone Creme Brûlée which is a Matchless/Vox style amp into a 1x12 Celestion Greenback speaker mic’ed with a LEWITT MTP440 - similar to a Shure SM57...the the Amp also runs into the Two Notes Captor X load box/IR loader and we blend the sound of the Captor X with the real speaker...there is not much else...the mic & Captor X signals run through the Yamaha console behind us which has some nice analogue preamps and then into an Apollo interface and straight into Logic...I think Alex rolls off the bottom end a little bit but other than that we try to keep the signal as un-processed as possible
I play all original material ...I feel it fits into some genre of Metal ...BUT I do NOT Chug or play anything based off of strumming ...where others strum I use a lot of rests. Think of the Free Tune ....It's Alright Now but with Metal tone. But I find those old Boss pedals just plain nasty lol
HM2 & HM3 should be combined as a DUAL WAZA pedal!!! And for you 2 of this channel, if you’re not Metal-Heads, then there’s the Boss Blues Driver you can use instead, because it’s gonna be limited numbers they gonna make, it’s would be a waste if you’re not Metal-Heads and you have it, while the Metal-Heads who’s missed these pedals.
Hehe...sorry...but that was the idea with this video. I really like these pedals as distortion pedals and I wanted to show that there is more to them than just the everything on 10 sound
@@TSFAHTPS oh I was just being a jerk, love what you guys do and that you're showing how to make music with these things and not just copy old Nordic homework ❤❤
(secret recorded conversation of these two guys prior to filming) "Hey we are doing a video on TWO heavy metal pedals!" "Hey, why don't you get your TELECASTER style guitar with very weak vintage sounding pickups! Because when you think metal tones, you think single coils on a TELE!" "Yes, let's do that! That is sure to make most of the video completely useless, as a reference as to how the pedals sound!"
You are missing the point of this video...watch every single other video about these pedals and you will see what they sound like as “metal” pedals...the whole idea of this video is that these pedals are great not JUST for metal but for other styles of music too...it’s in the title...all you have to do is read the title
@@TSFAHTPS "Not just for metal?" does not really state what you are writing. I made a comment. I stand by it. Yuh know -- this does not seem very "Super Fun Awesome Happy Time" to me, dude. And that is clearly in your title.
This is the only video on youtube where the HM2 doesnt sound like the HM2.

Hm-2 works quite well for “grunge” type tones, Tad Doyle of the band Tad even used one.
Yep. Suzi Gardner from L7 too.
Your intro literally gave me a giggle. "Who else is better to do metal shootouts than us...?" "Hellooo" "Yoohooo" LOL!
Exactly 😜

Did you use it for all the distortion or just to boost the Amp? In the first Cas would have been a waste having that Amp
Prince even used the HM2 during the Purple Rain period. It’s certainly versatile

The HM-3 on the first strum at 5:49 sounds damn perfect.
Same at 8:41 damn🍾
Thank you very much!!

can't wait to hear the new HM-2w
Great sound on a clean amp.

Yeah...its a very underrated pedal...thanks Christian
Hm3 all the way
But does it _jazz?_
That's a stupid question, of course it does. Might not be your granpa's Jazz but that doesn't mean it's not _jazz_
Haha...exactly!!
I appreciate these compare videos but way too much talking. Just play and compare.
🤷🏻♂️
I keep hearing Waza when I hear this pedal..... 🤔🤐
How dare you guys play an HM-2 without all the knobs at 10, do you know how many churches had to be burned to keep that sound scared?
