I’ve been in the career for three years. I am now making anywhere from $4000-$6000 a month. Summertime is sometimes lower than $4000. I’m actually really good at doing Lip blush, nano Brows and Powder Brows, lash enhancement and it’s still such a struggle constantly having to find new clients. Once the client loves the results and you do a few touchups they don’t really come back that frequently anymore, so it’s a constant hustle for new ones. It’s not like hairdressing, nail techs, lash techs where the customers comes back every week or every month. You have to really put yourself out there which feels a second job. Just think about this if you’re trying to start this career. It is really rough. Get a career with reoccurring clients that’s my best advice. I’ve spent too much money and too much time to give up at this point.
I do permanent makeup and let me tell you, you have to hustleeeee. you’re going to spend a lot of money getting started. you also have to have a lot of confidence in what you do. this career is hard to do alone and is pretty stressful.
Absolutely! Whenever someone says "it must be hard to be a PMU Artist/biz owner," I tell them that it is! However, anything we do in life will be hard, no matter what career we pursue. Question comes down to - what type of difficulties are you willing to go through? All jobs will come with their own difficulties.
It’s a constant hustle and extremely stressful bc you constantly have to find new clients. It’s not like hair dresser that have they’re loyal clients, every month or every week. You will never stop hustling for new clients as a permanent Makeup Artist and that gets extremely exhausting.

This is a genuine question, for people who have tattoo education prior to getting into this field. Would you recommend taking an online course in order to get the proper education when most classes are 4-6k for a 3 day education? To me personally it’s a waste of money to spend that much money. I wouldn’t say it’s a waste for someone who has no education on needles and BBP or anatomy. I’ve been researching schools and it doesn’t make sense to me that people are charging that much money for a few hours. What would you recommend as an educator that someone with a little experience should do? Also thank you for making these videos I feel like their very thorough.
Hi Sara, great question! I still prefer an in-person course over an online course if it is your first time learning Permanent Makeup. Your tattoo background will give you a superior leg up and you will pick up the info much quicker! While you can learn from online education, it's a slower route. If I was in your position, I'd decide on a specialty and then find the absolute best trainer for it. And yes, while education is expensive, my investments have always helped me make a return. Oftentimes, it's not just learning the technique - it's also spending time with an experienced technician who can mentor you and discovering the nuances that make them successful. Whatever you decide, I wish you only the best on this new venture!
I was super fortunate that my mom let me practice on her 😫💕 If I was to start over again I’d ask my trainer if she could let me do a few 1-1 models with her so she could supervise my first few clients, or work at a PMU salon who could support me in the beginning 🙏🏼
Anna! Thank you for sharing your knowledge, I will be training at MLA Mircoblading next week and need all the help and guidance from mentors on my new journey. I'm enthusiastic about this new endeavor of becoming my own boss as a PMU Artist. Can't wait to create beautiful brows
Yasss Judith that's so exciting!! It's a very rewarding endeavor indeed 😊 Congratulations on taking that first step - MLA looks like an amazing place to train! Let me know how it goes ❤
After getting my own eyebrows done I am now in the research phase of starting my PMU career. The studio where I had my brows done offers a 3-day training. The owner allows students to do 12 models in her studio to help build your portfolio. I can tell by your videos and your website that you are an amazing instructor. In your opinion, would I benefit more from a local instructor? I am thinking to fly out for your course but would it be too difficult to get started on my own having no tattoo or microblading experience. I highly value your input.
I’m so honored that you’re considering flying out to New York for my course! There are a couple of factors I would consider when choosing a first trainer: the style that they teach should be one that you’d like to replicate for your future clients, what kind of support is given after the training is over, and how big the class size is (ideally it’d be intimate enough so you get individualized attention)! Check in with yourself and ask yourself what’s the most important thing to you right in this moment? Is it that you want to develop the skill sets for PMU, or is it that you need a studio to host your demo models in? Take your time to reflect and listen to your gut instinct! 💞
What are your thoughts on coaches who do a 3 day course? do you feel this is sufficient education for PMU? of course other education will be needed after but specifically the 3 day courses?
Hi Eva! I personally started with a 3 day course and I felt like it really put me on the path to success. For me, it was less important the amount of days & more important the trainer him/herself! If they're highly respected in the industry & produce quality work, most likely they'll have a wealth of knowledge that will really benefit you! I'd suggest reaching out to their past students & getting honest feedback, looking at the curriculum to see if they offer hands on practice, etc.
Great question! As a form of extra income, PMU is an excellent source and I think it’s totally worth it. Even just taking 1-2 clients a week, you can expect to make an extra 5 figures a month. However, be prepared for the work that comes with it! If you’re passionate about art and cosmetics, you will find that it’s a fun pursuit. However, due to the competitive nature of PMU, it’s necessary to pair it with best business practices to make the side hustle successful. Definitely ask yourself how much disposable time and money you have to commit to it. Best of luck!
I did a course and had no even one client, tooo much competition lots of girls doing the same, costs of treatments are super low, basically working for free, I tegret so much took that class spend $4,000 dls and 5 months ago no even gaining any $ dolar, I entirely regret it. I didn’t take a course with her and I’m not complaining of her content just telling my story with a different academy/ artist/ instructor
Hi Darshna! A lot of the points made in this video apply to lip blushing as well. Within lip blushing there are several niches an artist can dive into - lip neutralizing, lip plumping, ombre lip blushing. It’s definitely an exciting time for new talent to come in and disrupt the industry 💞
@@fitmissdarsh7725 Not *always* but I do love this strategy and it worked well for my business. I think it's okay to offer more than one technique as a service provider down the line. However, if you're a beginner and you want to build a name for yourself fast, a great way to do that is to build an expertise in one area first. E.g. Become a lip neutralization expert -> get lip clients -> build trust -> add brow services -> sell to existing clients who already see you as reputable.
Hi, can you be a PMU from home? Can you explain fees regarding licensing- what kind of licenses you need to be able to be a PMU working from home? I’d love to set up a home studio but I’m not fully knowledgeable with county fees/ etc. thanks so much!
Hi Mayritah! In NYC, I believe we're not allowed to operate a tattoo studio from home. Insurance companies will also not insure you if you don't have a business address. I'm not familiar with counties outside of NYC though. I highly recommend starting out by renting somewhere inexpensive that is also turnkey! It offers a level of professionalism and protection that tattooing from home cannot.

While it's not necessary to have a cosmetology license to do PMU (in most states), it really depends on each person's goals. Are you looking to offer additional services that fall under cosmetology?
