Apparently, my high scores in 3rd grade stood until I was in 6th grade. My teacher's student's asked about "that weird name at the top", and she told them it was a former student who was in 6th grade now. They rallyed and took the top spot 7 weeks later. I was proud to have inspired my juniors to excel!
I remember playing this on an old black & green monitor as a kid, only it was called Troggle, or Troggle Trouble. As simple as it was, it was fun for an edutainment game. Like Pac-Man meets FNAF, but you learn math. Thanks for the nostalgia, Jerd!
That's the Theme from Peter Gunn, not James Gunn. Peter Gunn was a TV show about a private eye, mainly known these days for its theme music's compelling groove. James Gunn is a real life filmmaker and current co-head of DC Studios who sadly has no musical theme.
I would love to see you play Kid Pix! I remember going to my cousin's house who had it on her home computer (or I guess her parents had it on their computer, but whatever.) Seeing someone play it would be such a nostalgia trip!
Aha! I think I know what the deal is with the numbers during the intermission skits; if you string them together in a certain order, they'll give you Meryl's secret CODEC channel; the order can be determined by placing the Number Munchers box inside of the freezer for a day, then leaving it near a heat source for 15 minutes, then allowing it to cool to room temperature and then it'll reveal itself under the bar code! XD
I remember playing this game when I was in elementary school, I grew up in the 90’s. I remember also playing these games in computer lab while in school like: Math Blaster, Odel Down Under, Carmen Sandiego, Jump Start, and Humungous Entertainment Games.
Jared, You're right about it being a Wile.E. Coyote cutscene..these are particularly playing the scene where Coyote places birdseed to bait the roadrunner which he eats but then something is supposed to happen to him... however though the roadrunner eats then goes away and when Coyote checks the trap to see why it didnt work it instead springs on him. that's what happens each cutscene you see the reason why the muncher eats the number in the cutscenes is that its bait for the Muncher.
Troglus Normalus, that's a very Star Wars-ian dumb name. Love it. Anyone remember the school learning game where you went on ad adventure, had a jungle thing, some weird spirograph puzzle, I think you got a machete to get past something? That'll haunt my memory forever if I never find it again.
I have a similar story about the computer labs. I was a bit of a teachers pet and very shy at school. One of the teachers knew I liked computers so gave me personal access to one of the small computer rooms whenever I had a break, and free reign to do whatever I liked with the computer. I think I spent the time playing MUDs.
I imagine the numbers in the "Road Runner" animations are just the numbers they drew, they don't have a variation because they're just a graphic and having them change would just add space for no reason when they only have 1.2 MB of space to work with.
I remember this. I wish other people remembered shit like Zebug and Spellevator and Sticky Bear, those are intrinsically linked to this era to me.. I'm glad Jerd remembers Odell Lake, that was awesome. But he may or may not be remembering the version I grew up with.
My computer lab didn't have Number Muncher, but it did have Gizmos and Gadgets, Operation Neptune, Oregon Trail, The Incredible Machine, and Treasure Mountain. I liked Operation Neptune so much, one of my teachers let me borrow a copy to play at home.
I vaguely remember seeing this game (or something like it). In my elementary school days, our computer lab didn't have this. Instead, we had stuff like SimCity and The Oregon Trail. When I was in middle school, that didn't change much (although, the "cool" social studies teacher let us play Doom sometimes on the computer in his classroom).
I've never seen this game. I recall playing Oregon trail, Where in the world is Carmen Sandiago (only once for some reason), and I think I watched others play Math Blaster. Oh! We played a lot of Nigel's World in one grade. I'm still bad at geography, though.
I actually am the one who put my own personal copy in the computers at school. People thought I was some sort of con uter genius. I even got away with putting a Sega emulator that played Sonic the Hedgehog on the classroom computer. But I think mine was Word Munchers.
I remember back in the 3rd grade when lunch session was over and our teacher told us to wrap it up, one of my classmates was playing this and was at a high lvl. Everyone was watching so we asked if we can have a little more time so he can make it to lvl 100.
I'm a few years younger than Jerd (born in 1990), and my school's computer lab was all about "The Incredible Machine", though I got all my DOS-based math learning from Math Blaster on my grandparents computer (and then later the family computer at home).
Jeez this takes me back. I remember actually playing this on my home computer too. Along with other edutainment games like Math Blaster, Mario Teaches Typing, Oregon Trail and Dr. Quandary (love yer vid on that btw!!)
this is classic a true childhood great, and "why is it always 432" that's mr. munchers favorite number.........it's a fine tasting number but it's no 6'969.
The combination of math plus danger was an irresistible draw for 90s nerds. Please pay Odell Lake. It is an not appreciated in the same vein as Oregon Trail.
I don't remember if I've ever played this particular version of Munchers before, but I remember LOVING Trivia Munchers, that one had full 3D graphics and cutscenes and everything! From Math to Science to History to things like Pop Culture and Geography, if I remember? It was quite the fun time as a child without internet lol
Our computer lab had all the stuff Jerd mentioned plus a text based Star Wars game. Thinking back on it I guess that means our teacher was pretty awesome.
This game is my childhood. I think I played an older version on a monochrome screen although newer versions had color. 0:18 How did you phase through him? 1:55 I like that frowny face. It's kind of hard to get eaten by a Normalus without doing it intentionally. Unless you hang out on the edge where they can come out anywhere. 4:03 Those highlights are safe zones. Troggles can't go in them. Even a Normalus will turn a different direction if one is in it's path. Troggles will disappear if a safe zone spawns on it. OH NICE TROGGLE 69! 6:57 I recall the game looking worse as well and this isn't even the best looking version. I think I played the Apple 2 version. IDIOT! OH MY GOD THEY EAT EACH OTHER!? You didn't know the Troggles are cannibals? 16:28 The Yellow Troggle is the worst. He follows you. DID I JUST GET EATEN TWICE!? WHAT THE F**K?! Eatception. I don't think the second one counted. You only lost one life. HE CAME OUT OF NOWHERE! Don't go to the edge unless you have to. HAHA STUPID IDIOT!
I bought a CD-ROM disk of number munchers for Windows 95/98 back in grade school that was a more upgraded audio & graphics (cartoony and more than digital beeps). Yes I remember playing the old school one with simple graphics in computer lab which is why I bought this sequel.
"Back when school had computer labs" Poor me living in rural europe who hasn't seen a computer in school until 8th grade. And then just had to do boring stuff on on them.
Imagine if this got remade today, and covered more complex mathematics like algebra geometry or trigonometry lol Still a nice romp through edutainment! I wonder if 249 was an inside joke, like if it was the number of lines the game was coded in or something.
I don't remember if I played this as a kid, but I recently actually started playing it to... catch up as it were, cause my math skills are kinda behind. XD
O damn I remember this game you are taken me way back to the Apple II computer days when I was in 1st grade bro. I like super munchers and number munchers
The highlighted squares can't be entered by troggles, so you can wait in them for a breather or plan your movement around them.
Apparently, my high scores in 3rd grade stood until I was in 6th grade. My teacher's student's asked about "that weird name at the top", and she told them it was a former student who was in 6th grade now.

Truly an inspirational story

Watching Jared treat this childrens game like the latest Dead Space is hilarious. Purple guy for the win.
Oh man I LOVED this series as a kid. I wonder if this is why I went on to get my degree in mathematics haha
Can’t believe Jared erased the rock n roll hall of fame, the basketball hall of fame, the baseball hall of fame etc.
Number Munchers, Oregon Trail, and Doctor Quandary were what I played all the time in school. More Doc Q than anything.
Never thought the Troggles would accidentally commit cannibalism when running into each other. lol
I would love to see you play Kid Pix! I remember going to my cousin's house who had it on her home computer (or I guess her parents had it on their computer, but whatever.) Seeing someone play it would be such a nostalgia trip!

The whole time I couldn't help but hear 'Mathman! Mathman! Mathman!" over and over.
HAHAHAHAHA the James Gunn theme? Jared its The PETER GUNN THEME!
Number Munchers and Zoombinis were my JAM!
Zoombinis is so good! I recently played it again on Steam, and I think it holds up.
@@DJMikeNMix oh dang! I love that, I'll have to check it out!
They're eating eachother! Then they're going to eat me! Oh my gooooooooooooooooooooood!
Jared: "Factors of 61. I like it when they give me easy ones.'
Me: *Anxiety Induced PTSD for the whole video.*
I remember playing this, Super Solvers: Treasure Mountain, and Math Blaster when I was growing up. Good times in the computer lab
I loved Super Solvers, I played that game sooo much and my brother loved their second game, Gizmos and Gadgets!
Yay Number Munchers! As you may've guessed I remember this game fondly 😊
I have a similar story about the computer labs. I was a bit of a teachers pet and very shy at school. One of the teachers knew I liked computers so gave me personal access to one of the small computer rooms whenever I had a break, and free reign to do whatever I liked with the computer.

hahaha Smarty jumpscare eating you was hilarious
I remember playing this in elementary school, my school had a bunch of old apple 2 computers with lots of copies of this game and Oregon trail.
Okay Vlad, we definitely need more of the Jared "Idiot" chorus 😂
I remember this.
I wish other people remembered shit like Zebug and Spellevator and Sticky Bear, those are intrinsically linked to this era to me..
I'm glad Jerd remembers Odell Lake, that was awesome. But he may or may not be remembering the version I grew up with.
Looks like Vlad is back y'all
So many memories wasting time at school with this game! Thanks jerd for the flashback
Jared and his little money jokes never get old
I remember playing this and Oregon trail in elementary school in the late 80’s! I believe we called it “computer center time” back then lol.
Yeah, this game was not part of my childhood, it's always fun hearin' people talk 'bout it though!
first time I ever saw gameplay!
Looks cool... I was more into Math Blasters growing up
My mom used to rent a computer from our local library, and this was always the best game we got. Soooo many hours logged. Thanks Jerd!
This is the kind of high-octane content I tune in for! Yeah!
(I actually really enjoyed this, thank you Jared)
Number Muncher is Homestar Runner's real dad.
Sewiously.
Our computer lab had Oregon trail, geometry golf, and the mysterious island of Dr Quandry
I love watching jerd play games! He's my fav RUclipsr rn
I've never seen this game. I recall playing Oregon trail, Where in the world is Carmen Sandiago (only once for some reason), and I think I watched others play Math Blaster. Oh! We played a lot of Nigel's World in one grade. I'm still bad at geography, though.
Never knew about this game but I would certainly appreciate it as a kid. I loved games like this.
I actually am the one who put my own personal copy in the computers at school. People thought I was some sort of con uter genius. I even got away with putting a Sega emulator that played Sonic the Hedgehog on the classroom computer.

I was raised on Math Munchers Deluxe. Same concept, but the graphics were more cartoony and in-your-face.
this is classic a true childhood great, and "why is it always 432" that's mr. munchers favorite number.........it's a fine tasting number but it's no 6'969.
OMG KID PICS but number muncher was the memorable on the rows on the colored apples xD
The 432 numbers is like the bird seed from the road runner cartoons! 😂
If this were made today, those numbers in the cutscene would be like a hash of a link to some horrifying backstory
7:42 You are Number Muncher. You munch numbers. So set a trap with a number as the bait. Makes sense to me lol
The combination of math plus danger was an irresistible draw for 90s nerds. Please pay Odell Lake. It is an not appreciated in the same vein as Oregon Trail.
I also remember word munchers - yup all in the ole computer lab - ahh the 90's
i remember this and the iconic game Outnumbered! so much fun lol
I had complete forgotten about this. I played these when I was super young. Good times sitting in the computer lab "learning"
Dr. Quandy was the biggest pull at my grade school. No one ever seems to remember it.
Heard of Number Munchers.
.
But I remember the all time classic Cross Country Canada!
.
.
Ahhh nostalgic memories of playing this game.
Nope, we didn't have that one at my school when I was a kid. Nice to see what else was out there!
4:07 nice.
Odell Lake! I forgot what that game was called. That was a strange one. I remember this got real intense in the later levels.
I had no memory of this until this video, and now suddenly I recognize it.
Peter Gunn is the theme. Lol. Close though!
Chip's Challenge is one game from that era that I remember.
Loving DOS week, retro PC games are so neglected on RUclips
Our computer lab had all the stuff Jerd mentioned plus a text based Star Wars game. Thinking back on it I guess that means our teacher was pretty awesome.
This game is my childhood. I think I played an older version on a monochrome screen although newer versions had color. 0:18 How did you phase through him? 1:55 I like that frowny face.
I had Alligator math in the 80s
I remember playing this as a kid in the 1990’s
Bwhoa, it's my childhood! One of the few games my mom actually spent money on for the PC that actually worked on our old-ass Windows 3.1!
I remember this from my childhood however the game I played most was DinoPark tycoon
Ah number munchers my favorite survival horror game
I bought a CD-ROM disk of number munchers for Windows 95/98 back in grade school that was a more upgraded audio & graphics (cartoony and more than digital beeps). Yes I remember playing the old school one with simple graphics in computer lab which is why I bought this sequel.
The current world record for a Number Muncher speedrun is 7m 22s (Challenge mode, Normal settings, 30 levels).
We had Oregon Trail and Carmen Sandiego.
This brings back memories. Those trog monsters are still scary.
Holy crap I thought I made this game up in my head.
PETER Gun theme, Jared! :)
Oh man, I had this game as a kid.
"Back when school had computer labs"

Yeah I remember playing this in class a lot as a kid I remember it being my favorite educational game ❤😊
Welcome back Jared and Vlad!!!
This brings back memories of putting DOOM on all the school computers in middle school 😅
I played this a lot at school back in the day.
You can't just munch numbers in public!
That brings back fond memories of very high stress computer lab sessions! That game was serious business for me.
I remember playing this on an old apple 2 back in the third grade lol
Type Attack could be fun!
Only math program I had in school was Math Blaster. Strangely the schools in my young years only had apple 2's and OG macintoshs but never a PC?
Floppy Disk life ❤️
I remember number muncher on the old school computer I also remember this crazy game called Troggle trouble math
I think I first played number munchers on Apple IIe with the black and green screen and then later they had math munchers on Macintosh
Heck yes, Number Munchers!!!
I absolutely L O V E this series, please keep it going
Used to play this Oregon Trail and O'Dell lake
I don't remember if I played this as a kid, but I recently actually started playing it to... catch up as it were, cause my math skills are kinda behind. XD
O damn I remember this game you are taken me way back to the Apple II computer days when I was in 1st grade bro. I like super munchers and number munchers
