I find it really cool how with the reveal of luffys true devil fruit, the world govt. said that the fruit can be used to fight in any way the user imagines. With that being said, luffy isn't aware of his true abilities, so he uses moves that make sense in HIS mind. like how culverin changes direction midair and keeps accelerating, those aren't properties of rubber like Kaido said, but luffy honestly believes that is how rubber works.
Something about that theme coming out in moments like these turn me, 26, into an 8 year old sitting in front of my living room tv. Nostalgia to the max

I believe he’s using his awaking to turn a little piece of air in front of his fist to bounce it off a small rubber wall to redirect his punch. This later explains how he fully unlocks his awakening in his fight against kaido.
Thats not his awakening thats something about haki making him stretchier in gear 4, only time u can call it an awakening is when he is doing that in base form

probably gear 3 is also affected by luffy's thoughts. because if you hit with a very big balloon you will not cause more damage like gear 3 does
