Please do yourself a favor and check out his version of "Folsum Prison Blues". I know how much you like his guitar and banjo playing, but in this one he sings too (Beautiful voice). It's hilarious (Great sense of humor in the song) and remember I told you to "Watch out for the drinking glass".... ruclips.net/video/EKkg7zbzDnM/видео.htmlsi=U4lvC83xNdb6jKNp
I'm 63 & my Mom took my Sister and I to see Roy Clark perform live at Barton Coliseum in Little Rock, AR. This was in the 70's. He played the guitar, banjo, trumpet, clarinet and who knows what else. This man could play darn near any instrument I know. Thanks for your reaction video, I really liked it.
A reporter once asked Eddie Van Halen what it was like to be the World's Best guitar player. Eddie replied.."I don't know, you'll have to ask Roy Clark."
The actors reacted so strongly because Clark sandbagged them. He played other songs in rehearsal, but brought out his masterpiece for the live performance.
Have you ever heard anyone make the sound of a machine gun on a guitar? Listen to the 1964 video of Roy Clark doing Folsom Prison Blues then from about the same time watch the 12th Street Rag.....he will blow your mind.
What’s more amazing than this you need to see him do it on a 12 string. The look on your face is priceless. In my opinion the great thing about Roy is he is as funny as he is a great musician you’ll see once you get into his catalog his face expressions are the best.
Check out Roy Clark "12th Street Rag". Roy passed away in 2018 at the age of 85. Check out the video where he plays the guitar, banjo and fiddle. The two actors are Tony Randal and Jack Klugman.
It's almost impossible to play lightning fast solo or runs on an acoustic. No effects, just raw talent.Roy had a tremendous right hand and his 64th notes are clean and seemingly effortless. He also plays jaw-dropping muted 128th notes on “Caravan” as a percussive statement. I watched his funeral & the Preacher of his church said that Roy would show up to church Sunday morning off thecroad, still dressed in his stage attire not to miss church. Jimi Hendrix was once asked what it was like being the world's greatest guitar player. He replied, “I don't know, go ask Roy Clark”. ✝️👍
Not only was Roy a master when it came to mastering string instruments, he was a full blown entertainer. He was witty and funny on a show called Hee Haw. Not only would he and a who's who in country would perform, but he would do sketches and skits, similar to SNL or Laugh In. Hee Haw was clean family entertainment from the late 60s thru the early 90s. Yeah some of the humor and the jokes were cheesy at times, but was really popular for about 25 years. Roy could also sing as well. Check out Roy on the Muppet Show doing Rocky Top.
That was great! I remember watching this on "The Odd Couple" show. Roy Clark was a great entertainer, humble man & super talented. He was both a singer & musician. His guitar & banjo playing are legendary. A lot of musicians & artists today could learn a lot from his style & technique.
Idk how my man didn't break any strings. Man I wish I could watch this is in super slo-mo. Like you said, his accuracy is incredible!! Btw, I loved watching The Odd Couple. They are total opposites who are roommates. Oscar is the dirty one who is a sports writer for the newspaper. Felix is the clean one. I can't remember what his job was. But they were always butting heads over Oscar's dirtiness and Felix's almost OCD cleanliness. Classic TV show. Roy was also on a show called, Hee Haw. The dueling banjos might have been from that show. They might classify that show as a "variety show", I'm not sure. But there was a of of comedy and music. Roy is a pretty funny comedian as well. Idk a lot of his stuff, but I'm here for it. I'd love to see what I missed as a kid.
Yeah, The Odd Couple was great. Remember the theme song - "Can two divorced men share an apartment...without driving each other CRAZY?" I used to watch re-runs growing up. Felix was a photographer. The TV show was based on a stage play by Neil Simon. And there was a 1968 movie based on the play that starred Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau (can you guess which one played Felix and which one played Oscar?).
12th Street Rag by Roy Clark is one you just have to see! He blends humor through his facial expressions while playing impossible guitar licks. It’s only about two or three minutes but so impressive 🔥
Roy is amazing! I play guitar. The stuff he is doing here is way advanced that most will never come close to, My favorite Roy Clark is the Hee haw gospel quartet. It’s simple instrumentally speaking yet Absolutely the very best of that type music I’ve ever heard.
The Odd Couple was about two divorced men who are as different as night and day, sharing an apartment out of necessity. The two actors playing the leads were both intelligent and cultured and at t he top of their game when this was filmed. Watching them be in complete awe of the talent in front of them is so fun to watch. No acting here. Just raw responses.
You don't have to be a guitar player to see that Roy Clark is one of GOATS. "The Odd Couple" was an amazing TV series. Tony Randall and Jack Klugman were great in their roles.
Yeah, Roy was an Awesome! Musician. Being a songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist myself, playing guitar, drums and keyboards, I've always liked a lot of different kinds of musicians and different kinds of music. I have a lot of musician friends who play not only rock but other styles of music as well. I'm a self-taught guitarist, however not on drums or keyboards. On drums I studied under a very good jazz drummer and on keyboards I studied under a guy who was well educated in both jazz and classical keyboards and piano. He's the one who told me that if you can master both jazz and classical music on keyboards, piano or guitar, then you can play any kind of music. This is the reason why Swedish metal guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen is such a great guitar player. He studied classical music and then switched over to playing metal music. I know a lot of musicians; however, I know very few who can play this technique of guitar. This is a Spanish guitar technique called "flamenco-style guitar". I have one friend who studied classical guitar music in college who could play like this and another friend who went to college on a bass guitar scholarship and then switched to learning classical guitar too while he was in college, and he could play this as well. It's not the kind of stuff that any guitarist can just play because I play guitar, and I can't play that. And I know a lot of other good rock guitar players that can't play that either. If you would like to hear something else like this, then listen to that old song by the band The Monkees titled "Valleri". There is some of this style of playing in it and it sounds really cool. It's played by session guitarist Louie Shelton. Cool reaction.
Loved Roy Clark and he was funny too! He was on HeeHaw for years too! Another great you should check out Jerry Reed! Amos Moses is Jerry's coolest song also a funny guy. Roy had a funny song Thank God and Greyhound she's gone!
The Malaguena is Spanish Cave music. there are also videos of him doing this piece with a 12 string and the large Spanish Guitar. He and Glenn Campbell have real guitar players bow to them. Roy was at this level until his death. Yes, this was done before a live studio audience. Yesterday When I Was Young.
Steven! Your face! Roy was one of the best "stringmen" - ever. If the instrument has strings, he handled it like this. There were very few who could come close to him. And as a comedian . . . especially while playing, the faces he made. Check out his song Thank God and Greyhound. Also, The Great Pretender for a start. He was also one of the stars of the show Hee Haw with Buck Owens, Grandpa Jones, Stringbean, and many well known guest stars like Johnny Cash.
I learned basic guitar playing with the Roy Clark Big Note Songbook. I eventually learned to play some of this song. I saw him once in Branson MO. I have always watched him in awe, regardless of whether it was guitar, banjo, or fiddle. I was in heaven that night.
Love your reactions! That being said, if you want to see something crazy you've got to see this one. Roy does a full version of the song live on a 12 string. Roy Clark's Mesmerizing "Malagueña" (Live). I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Have a great day!
Check out "12th Street Rag" by Roy Clark. Amazing speed in that one as well and highly entertaining. Another great performance is Roy doing a hilarious comedy version of "Folsom Prison Blues". Also worth checking out is Roy Clark singing a heart-wrenching ballad that made it to the top of the charts. Originally written by French artist Charles Aznavour, Roy's biggest pop hit is called "Yesterday, When I Was Young".
You should find a video of him playing this on a 12-string. He breaks, I think, 2 strings when he goes into that part that you talked about being almost like a slap bass part. Pretty wild stuff!
You need to find old episodes of "Hee Haw"...he played his whole catalog at some point on the show. I think Hee Haw ran for 20 years, but dont hold me to that. It's also nice to see Buck Owens and Roy play together.
Besides being god-tier musician, Roy Clark was also a funny dude. His skits with Buck Owens on Hee Haw were some of my most vivid memories as a kid Guitarists who know, also know a man named Tommy Emmanuel. Possibly the world’s greatest living acoustic guitarist
Yep, Roy was fantastic! He could be seen as a regular cast member of the early seventies, country-oriented variety tv show, Hee-Haw. Another underrated guitarist is Glenn Campbell! And yes, this could definitely fall into the “flamenco” category. For another, possibly unexpected flamenco performance, check out Eddie Van Halen’s solo track, “Spanish Fly”, from their second album.
I was riveted to see and meet Mr Roy at his theater in Branson, MO. Mind blowing performance. I was force-fed Hee Haw in my formative years, but now can actually appreciate all of the talent on that show that broadcast every Saturday, lol. It’s pronounced “Mal-uh-gain-ya. Common mistake by non-Spanish-speaking folks. Love your reactions, by the way!
If you want to get a chuckle out of one of his songs, react to "Thank God and Greyhound She's Gone." The only thing I can say about Roy Clark is that he was simply one of the best.
Love Roy Clark- my grandma looked like she could have been his sister. He plays fiddle/violin amazingly also anything with strings like you said. He can sing also- check Yesterday When I Was Young!
Roy Clark was a wonderful musician, singer, entertainer. You should check out some of his vocal performances. My favorite is "Yesterday When I was Young" Enjoyed your reaction.
Great comments, Steven! Now...if you watch Victor the Guitar Nerd (on his own channel...not just with Dan Vasc), you'll find more stuff like this. Victor is a total guitar wizard...as was Roy Clark (who passed away on November 15, 2018). This particular song was one of my mom's favorites to play on her violin (who was born in 1923, and played violin from the time she hit age 5). I grew up hearing it in all sorts of different versions, by multi-talented people playing a huge variety of instruments. I still love it! 😀 The writer (who sometimes has been called the Cuban Gershwin) of this wonderful piece of history, was 20th century composer Ernesto Lecuona. In 1933 (when Mom was 10, and WELL-established as a first-rate, prize-winning violinist, here in South Dakota) He wrote “Malaguena” as the sixth and final movement of his Suite Andalucia for piano, referring to the southern Spanish port city of Malaga. Since THEN, the song has been played on just about any instrument you can imagine. It really has kind of become the test for musicians, everywhere...even to this day. In 1964, it was one of the FIRST tests I had to pass during my correspondence course in accordion-playing. Whew!!! I also still have the piano music for it, but...sigh...I haven't had a piano to play for YEARS, and...wow...I think it would be extremely hard to learn all over again...not sure I'd even want to TRY! 🤪 As for the show in which the three men pulled this off, the regulars ("other dudes") from Neil Simon's sitcom "The Odd Couple," were played by Tony Randall as Felix Unger (seated in the middle of the three) and Jack Klugman as Oscar Madison (seated at the far right, looking at them on the screen). The two of them still remain in the memories of TONS of us, as the funniest TV duo, ever. Thanks for reacting! Really enjoyed the video. 😀
You need to check out Roy Clark and Glen Campbell playing "Ghost Riders in the Sky." Roy is playing an electric 6 six string while Glen is playing an electric 12 string. It is simply amazing.
Flamenco guitars are built for faster attack and shorter sustain. This allows for faster playing..... see Al DiMeola and Paco Lucia doing the song Mediterranean Sundance live.
We were treated to this kind of stuff all the time. Not only from Roy Clark, but also Glen Campbell, Jerry Reed & Chet Atkins. And then we saw them playing together with big smiles on their faces. No egos involved. Because it's Country Music people don't know about them today. Please watch an episode of Hee Haw & let us know what you think. I love that show!
Man, love Roy Clark! He's such an incredible musician. My Grandpa was a musician ( as am i) and he knew a lot of those guys from Hee-Haw. My mom said they use to come by the house when the were in town. Crazy good.
On this same episode, Roy plays and sings his biggest hit (Yesterday When I Was Young), then blue grass banjo, then Violin (both classical style and country). This guitar piece was the wrap up. Look up a YT video titled Roy Clark Plays Any Genre!
Roy Clark is the example of a true entertainer..both musically and with his on stage comedy and timing. When you have the time, go start watching Hee Haw TV series. It was on back in the 70s/80s. Brings back great memories of my way young childhood. Thanks for the review.
Roy was fantastic as a musician and singer. Check out his instrumental TWELFTH STREET RAG. It all but sets the fretboard on fire. ❤❤❤. Always dug his material and still do
You have to check out Glen and Roy playing a duet on Hee Haw. Glen has always been known as one of greatest guitar players of all time. He usually plays a 12 string guitar.
When I was a little girl, we would watch Hee Haw every Saturday evening. My mom hated country music, but she loved Hee Haw, and a big part of the reason for that was Roy Clark. He was my favorite too.
What are the most beautiful songs ever💙💙💙💙 i’ve seen and heard it done by many and they’ve done very well and so does Roy Clark but the song alone unless you screw it up completely it’s always gonna be beautiful💙💙💙💙
Great reaction brother, to a certain classic that I remember watching at the time. He blew me away as a guitar player, because most of us focus on the left hand, but he clearly mastered the right. And what a perfect style to Master the right hand with, acoustic folk flamenco. Those triple strums take a long time to master, but these rhythms are common in this style of music. Cheers, see you on the next one. ☮️🎸🎵
@@setonhillstudios well if you're seeing this reply, as another commenter suggested, you should definitely check out Tommy Emmanuel. I'm a 35-year+ guitar player, and this guy plays things on the acoustic that I've not seen before or since!
@@setonhillstudios damn, sorry I should have looked first. My bad. Let me bounce back and suggest Michael Hedges, the song Woman of the World (live). He played a style like you've probably never seen, open tunings, lots of percussion, incredible stuff. Unfortunately he passed away at an early age from a car accident off the California hills... otherwise you'd know of him. Do yourself a favor... I'll go check out your Tommy vids now!🤘
When I was a kid, my hated grandmother used to torture me with "Hee Haw". (Ask your parents. Better yet, ask your grandparents.) Well, I got older and wiser and lamented what I had previously sneered at. When I met my Roy Buchanan-worshiping husband, the next guitar player on his list was Roy Clark. For *flamenco* work. The guy was just amazing. So, when I saw you had this, naturally, I jumped on it. Y'know, you're quickly becoming my favourite "drummers are idiots" counterpoint. 2:21 Yep, that was pretty much the face *i* was making, too. I recall on Hee Haw, he used to do guitar duets with a chap called Buck Owens. I'm guessing some of their work you'd do well to look into. Thoroughly enjoyed this one, young man. Love your channel!
Friend. There is by far. The MOST FANTASTIC. HISTORIC FOOTAGE of ENDLESS LEGENDS on the HEART FILLED FUN OL TV SHOW. HEE HAAAA... DVD COLLECTION RECOMMENDED.... An ERA SADLY Now Gone..
My wife and I saw his show in Las Vegas sometime in the 80s. Man, he can really play! He is funny too. Loved your reaction to this, Stephen. I can see you were blown away too.
This is one of the best performances on guitar I have ever seen......For a different genre you may want to consider watching anything by Steve Vai......another guitar virtuoso.
@@setonhillstudios Hey love your channel so far.......Love the way you have gone through the old classic live KISS stuff....just awesome. For Steve Vai, you may like "Tender Surrender" Back in the 80's and 90's we had some great guitarist.....Steve Vai is definitely a stand out.

He was master of the fiddle as well. Checkout Orange Blossom Special with 10 year old Jimmy Henley. You'll love this one in many ways.
You should check out Roy Clark and Glen Campbell playing ghost riders in the sky

Saw Roy Clark perform this in the early 90's at the Valley Forge Music Fair. A real virtuoso. Guitar, Fiddle, Banjo, Mandolin.
Next up is Roy on the fiddle. "Orange Blossom Special" is a good place to start but it doesn't matter.
Yes please!!
It's almost impossible to play lightning fast solo or runs on an acoustic. No effects, just raw talent.Roy had a tremendous right hand and his 64th notes are clean and seemingly effortless. Roy was also an accomplished comedian, and had a comedy/variety show on TV for many years. One of those generational talents.

For the scores of responders, the slap stick of your face when Roy hits the percussion. Almost everyone is gob smacked.

The two of them still remain in the memories of TONS of us, as the funniest TV duo, ever.
Thanks for reacting! Really enjoyed the video. 😀
Thanks for all the info Linda! Have a great day! 😁
You need to check out Roy Clark and Glen Campbell playing "Ghost Riders in the Sky." Roy is playing an electric 6 six string while Glen is playing an electric 12 string. It is simply amazing.
Roy was the Hendrix of country and western music
Spanish Guitar who played county and bluegrass but he did not stay in those genres.
From my all-time favorite TV show 😂
Anything with strings Roy Clark could play great
Such a beast!!! 🔥
Roy Clark was a true badass.😁
Crazy good.
Anything with strings!
Check out his spoof on The Folsom Prison Blues
And the funniest man! You’ll see in other videos
On this same episode, Roy plays and sings his biggest hit (Yesterday When I Was Young), then blue grass banjo, then Violin (both classical style and country). This guitar piece was the wrap up. Look up a YT video titled Roy Clark Plays Any Genre!
This was part of the flamingo as you said
Roy Clark is the example of a true entertainer..both musically and with his on stage comedy and timing. When you have the time, go start watching Hee Haw TV series. It was on back in the 70s/80s. Brings back great memories of my way young childhood. Thanks for the review.
Thank you for watching! He is an absolute master and this blew my mind! Appreciate you hanging out! 😁
It's Hee Haw. Great music live.
Roy can sing too!
There are quite a few videos of Roy Clark playing this, all of them live, and all just as incredible as this one.
Roy was fantastic as a musician and singer. Check out his instrumental TWELFTH STREET RAG. It all but sets the fretboard on fire. ❤❤❤. Always dug his material and still do
He is the best harp player I’ve ever heard.
in the mouth of madness , we roar !
He was the best none better, check out the rest of his music so great. SJ
Yesterday When I Was Young would be a good one to give a listen.
Let's Gooooo!I remember watching this live. And we watched Hee Haw every week too😂 Great reaction and Peace out ✌️ ☮️ 🙏
You have to check out Glen and Roy playing a duet on Hee Haw.
Thanks for hanging! Yeah, this was unreal and his technique is insane! Definitely one of the greats and can’t wait to hear more from him! 🔥
@@setonhillstudios well if you're seeing this reply, as another commenter suggested, you should definitely check out Tommy Emmanuel. I'm a 35-year+ guitar player, and this guy plays things on the acoustic that I've not seen before or since!
@@Dougwarren69 We got some Tommy videos here on the channel! Go to our homepage and look under the playlist ‘All About Guitars.’ Absolutely unreal! 😳
I'll go check out your Tommy vids now!🤘
@@Dougwarren69 No worries at all man! So many videos, it’s alot to sift through! 🤙🏻
Skills.
Thanks so much for the info! Definitely need to ask my grandparents about this dude! Amazing! 😳
Buck Owens. Another (relatively) unsung great guitarist.
@@Gordopopolis Right you are.
Friend. There is by far. The MOST FANTASTIC. HISTORIC FOOTAGE of ENDLESS LEGENDS on the HEART FILLED FUN OL TV SHOW. HEE HAAAA... DVD COLLECTION RECOMMENDED.... An ERA SADLY Now Gone..
I worked with his son Roy Clark, Jr. and he and his sons play also.
Oh wow! Thats awesome! Thanks for sharing!
My wife and I saw his show in Las Vegas sometime in the 80s. Man, he can really play! He is funny too. Loved your reaction to this, Stephen. I can see you were blown away too.
💙
Since you dug this. You should seriously check out Glen Campbell playing The William Tell Overture (acoustic). It will blow you away.
New subscriber! Roy Clark & Jimmy Henley/Orange Blossom Special😮😊from an early Hee Haw episode.
Oh. By the Way Bro. Roy Clark was my Very First Concert at Gross Memorial Collosium in Hays KS in 1974...... For Real.... I was 4.....
That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing!
This is one of the best performances on guitar I have ever seen......For a different genre you may want to consider watching anything by Steve Vai......another guitar virtuoso.
Appreciate it! 😃
The absolute best!!!!
He pulls it off because he is f'ng Roy Clark
Let’s goooooo! 🔥
He was shy so comedy helped him open up
His father played strings his mother played piano
There is a biography of sorts on RUclips
To learn more
Look up "Les Paul" and the "Les Paulverizor" ... "Jerry Reed"...
It's like watching Eddie Van Halen play the electric guitar in his prime. Insane talent.
Eddie was once asked, as was Jimmie Hendrix, hiw it felt to the best guitar player, both gave the same answer.. "Ask Roy Clark."
Tried to see Roy Clark at his theater in Branson, Mo. but his shows were always sold out. Loved the Odd Couple as a kid, Oscar was my hero. LOL
Please check out SOMETHING ABOUT YOU by BOSTON??? You’ll love it
He also does this on a 12 string. He was amazing. If it had strings Roy could play it.
Every time I watch this, I think what a horrible time for the crowd to applaud. Lol
🤣😂
