100% agreed! Kaftans are THE BEST!I even made a hippie fringe one, out of t-shirt knit material I got with an autumn pattern on it, and cut fringes in the sides, like people did to T-Shirts back in the day. I get compliments all the time on it.
Don't worry about cutting up a sari. South Asian women cut them up all the time to make skirts when they live in the West if they don't want to wear saris all the time. Saris are beautiful, but they aren't sacred. I was married to an Indian and wore mostly saris for the entire marriage. The only saris I would not cut up are the hand-woven ones. It wouldn't work anyway to try to make a skirt out of those. My hand-woven saris will stay saris. But then, I don't mind wearing them even today. Except for the border, saris are simply six yards of material. And you can make a long skirt to wear under them and wear any top. I used to wear long-sleeved T-shirts with my saris.
OH MY GOD ~!?! SAREES AS A KAFTAN MATERIAL AAAAAAAAA i have this super flowy bouncy fabric.. i think it's lycell mix, but its not longe nough for a kaftan to the floor.. would it look weird if it were capri length? 10:10 if you wanna make sure your fabric ruler doesnt move, buy a tiny amount of dycem and cut it into squares. it'll naturally stick to your ruler, and keep the fabric from shifting! i've seen products that are like velcro that you can attach to the ruler, but dycem is very thin the ribbon did a great job correcting the neckline.. it looks intentiojnal, not like a quick fix!
So beautiful!
Wow! What a beautiful addition to your cruise wardrobe. I have a beautiful sheer curtain I thrifted to make a Kaftan. Thanks for sharing your make!
Oh you have inspired me! Looking at my fabric now to make this project!
