- In 1912, the Carpathia responded to the Titanic's SOS call and was responsible for bringing the Titanic's remaining survivors to New York, a destination the Titanic was unable to reach. She helped save over 700 passengers and was labelled as a hero.
However, in 1918 - during the 1st World War - she suffered her own fate after being torpedoed by a German U-55 submarine. Despite, her sinking not being the a big maritime disaster, in terms of death, 5 people still lost their lives. This video is a type of tribute for her 100th anniversary since her fate.

Its sad to hear 5 people died but at least a lot of them survived. But its worse that she herself has fallen. I love to learn about titanic and everything else that surounds it and its sinking, thank you for making it a simple but clear ilustration of what happened. Great job!

The fate of the Hero was unceremonious at that. 2 torpedoes. No deaths. 1 16yr old liner. But at the same time something brilliant was lost. The first ship on scene for the Titanic disaster, the ship that brought home those 706 survivors. The ship that exceeded all expectations and hit the minds of the populous. Unceremoniously popped off by a pair of torpedoes. She was a legendary ship for the British, but just another target raided by the Kriegsmarine.

So many countries used civilian merchant ships and cargo vessels to transport supplies for the war effort. Any ships carrying troops, supplies, weapons, were targeted by German u-boats. Unfortunately many of the ships that were sunk had civilians on board but because of the contribution they gave to the war effort, the Germans argued that they were legitimate targets.

Fabulous work on the Capathia and the animations. But I must make a correction. The U-boat struck the Carpathia, while submerged, with one torpedo on the port side bow, followed by a second 80 seconds later, to the engine room, whereupon, she took an immediate list to port. Not starboard. The U-boat then surfaced while Carpathia was lowering lifeboats and torpedoed her again in the port side stern.
It took me a few hours to confirm all this after reading several sources. It was NOT easy to glean and verify all this detail, so you are excused from any errors. ;-)
My grandmother came to New York on Carpathia in 1908 from Fiume, Austria-Hungary as an emigrant .

There was a war on. Everyone not killed by the torpedo explosion got off safely. There’s actually a picture the U-Boat took of her sinking: it’s on the Wikipedia page.
