- This is a clip from the "Mike Campbell - The Guitars" documentary which has been available on the internet on and off for a few years.
I can never find it when I want to watch, so I thought I'd at least post this clip I have for others in the same position.
Mike Campbell is a one of a kind.

So are you
Wow, to hear such an accomplished guitarist speak with the respect and reverence that Mike does for George is very special. The emotion that he feels for George’s guitar solo is now probably further amplified by the loss of Tom Petty. Having all of those legendary musicians in the Travelling Wilburys was like catching lightning in a bottle.
Now Mike needs to play Handle With Care with Jeff Lynne at a major concert in 2021.
Add Dhani Harrison into the mix too
What a very humble guy. Great tribute.
That was a well-spent 5 minutes with Mike. Love how he would be intimidated, as we all would, by George, but also how Mike coaxed George into developing the slide solo himself.
Interesting observation about George's slide playing being melodic instead of raw gutbucket blues slide. I love those sounds, too but George was always about the melody. You can hum most of what he plays on guitar. A true artist and songwriter that we dearly miss. He was a good soul and so are you Mike. As far as lead playing i think your work with the Heartbreakers is some of the best guitar playing on record, period! Love your playing and musical sensibility!
Listen to George’s solo on “Bluest Blues” by Alvin Lee. He plays the fist slide solo and it completely matches what you said. Might be my favorite Harrison solo.
@@gpah58 thanks I will check it out.
Beautifully honest. That's what makes the heartbreakers so compelling. They are like regular guys that you could sit down with and have a burger/beer and not feel intimidated. Mike, your guitar sound is all your own. The American Girl riff will forever go down as one of the best and most memorable riffs of all time.
You ain't kidding☆
Yes it will and he is ICONIC and very humble !!!
Well said..... ❤
I love to hear a terrific player who is humble and not beating his own drum, so to speak. Good job, Mike.
Your generosity resulted in beautiful slide play from George.
i sold him this guitar...it still chokes me up when i watch "concert for geroge" and i see it at royal albert hall
Do you know the color? Is it Charcoal Frost that has faded over time?

The most underrated guitarist playing the Strat's most underrated pickup position. Good to see some love for the ol' middle pickup.
Who thinks Mike Cambell is underrated? Nobody I know thinks that......
Underrated? Who comes up with this shit?
Mike is underappreciated by the masses. But that's due to how much the record industry has sunk in the past two decades. These documentary videos are very important for future generations who have never heard Tom Petty and his lead guitarist (Campbell) play live.
He not underrated
I think he was stoned and didn’t realize
RIP- George Harrison ✝️
RIP- Tomas Earl Petty ✝️
RIP- Howard Norman Epstein ✝️
RIP- Roy Orbison ✝️
The first time i finally learned to play My Sweet Lord it actually made me cry. George was so spiritual and you can feel it when you play his music. Keep up the good work Mike. I love all you guys in the Heartbreakers and The Dirty Knobs are fantastic. Thank God for a break from all the crappy music out there nowdays. Love you guys and keep truckin.
Something saddens me when I watch such humble souls talk about their stories. In 10 Years, most of our great musicians will have passed on and my question is who will be left of this caliber to carry the can?
How true
Mike Campbell- national treasure
Finished my Green Strat yesterday, Warmoth Body & Neck Rosewood fretboard and have Dimarzio Area 67 Bridge, area 58 Mid & Neck but choose to go CBS Big Headstock Neck, added a Fishman Piezo Power bridge in Translucent green over Swamp Ash, Gilmore 7 position wiring
this video is a treasure.
Sweat sounding strat and cool color.📀📀
BEAUTIFUL Soul Mike....Thanks
I love Mike's observations on George's slide playing, Mike definitely took that into his own playing - just listen to the Learning To Fly solo. Absolutely soars like the title implies! I think The Edge and Daniel Lanois really brought that melodic slide playing further into the rock scene as well. I think it adds such a dynamic element for the right song. I'd be remiss to not mention Duane Allman's melodic slide masterpieces as well...
I couldn't agree more. Mike looked up to George and as they became friends, George kind of rubbed off on him. When T-Bone Burnett produced The Wallflowers album "Bringing Down the Horse," he sent an early mix of 6th Avenue Heartache to Mike and asked him to add a lead guitar track. Mike didn't know his home studio slide guitar recording made it into the final mix until he heard the song on the radio. Soon after, he said that George called him up and said "I heard you played on this... I didn't know you were doing me now!" 😄
I get it Mr. Campbell. Sometimes I get overwhelmed by how blessed I've been. I remember once I was in Kansas City with friends and here comes Mike Campbell walking through the building. I was slack jawed and thinking "Here's my chance!", right? But I couldn't think of what to say to a Rock and Roll god, so I just kept going, LOL. But we made eye contact!
His slide playing is so damn smooth.
It’s incredible…best “touch” out of any guitarist
Mike is a Fucken treasure! I liked his music ok, never obsessed, I’m a hard rock and true blues guy but this dude is such a bright spirit in the guitar world. Not a pretentious prick vibe is remotely possible with this guy.
I just wish I could play like that. LOL!!! But yeah...very unpretentious. Seems very cool.
Of course Mike Campbell has a Sherwood Green 1964 Strat. Rare as hens teeth
Looked like Charcoal Frost to me.
Yes Mike ! me too .... every time I hear that solo ... It Hits Me .....The Same...... You played it ....Beautifully ! soo...Good You Both are in Your Own WaY
How can you NOT like Mike Campbell..he’s simply one of kind!! I’ve learned so much from his playing..most important lesson was “Trust your own style, and build on it in a way to make it your own”!! Right on!!
Beautiful. Your sound touches my soul.
What an incredibly humble man. Such a talented and interesting musician. Could listen to his anecdotes and stories for hours. 👍🎸🏴🇺🇸
Love Mike on a Strat!
I always thought that solo brings goosebumps and tears to anyone with a heartbeat. Just like the Learnin to Fly solos.
Watching video’s of George’s friend and acquaintances talk about him, you can tell he was a solid guy.
Crying... I get you totally. Just hearing his slide work on the songs he played gets me. 😭🙏🏼
Never heard him speak before....a class act.
Lovely piece. George Harrison had that effect on most people he met I think.
As Mike intimated there was something particularly spiritual about George Harrison and I think some of it came from the time he spent in India...
Mike seems like a really nice guy -- in addition to being one of the best guitarists. I enjoy listening to what he has to say about songs and playing...and his experiences in the business. Great stuff.
This guys absolutely amazing. Every music fan should know who Mike Campbell is and his work. We’re blessed to have him here !
You mean there's somebody out there who doesn't know his great work?? LOL!!
Excellent video, with a fantastic guitar player. 🎸
Thanks for sharing this..
Mike is such a real, fantastic human being, so honest and emotional....one of God,s best creations!
It's amazing how he sounds like Tom. My regret was never seeing them live.
Great story, Great guitar
I wish Mike Campbell didn’t play with Jason Sinay, the heir to the Wonderful Company, in the Dirty Knobs. This is a case of its who you know, not what you know. Mike seems like a “woke” dude, that’s why playing with the heir to the POM Wonderful fortune is such a weird thing to me. The Wonderful Company are notorious for using all of CA’s water for pomegranates and almonds. Pomegranates are also a non-native fruit. Sinay is also a little baby and if you bring up anything about being the heir to the Wonderful Co, he cries like a baby.
Makes me laugh that Mike fealt intimidated meeting George Harrison cuz I would be intimidated out of my socks if I had the good fortune to meet Mike. Never-the-less, I understand what Mike is saying. I appreciate his honesty and now hold him in even higher regard for being real. Sweet.
Modesty people, is mankind biggest virtue. Remember that.
Super musician 👌
You cant get cooler then this.
What a kind soul you are Mike.
Huge fan of you Tom, you and the band over the years.
Just a genuinely nice guy.
The world needs more Toms, George’s and Mikes.
I do know what mike means when he said he knew when he was struggling....people will always try to encourage you but your heart knows when its not working.
And im not comparing my shitty playing to this master.... im just sayn
I wonder if it's really a charcoal grey, but the nitro has yellowed it, so it's kinda green?
Very cool Fender. Love you guys. RIP Tom Petty.
I too used to get nervous when George Harrison was looking over my shoulder watching me play
Great color.Transition logo too.
I think it will be music that saves humanity. There is something very spiritually connecting about it. It connects our souls to the Eternal.
what a humble guy and great guitar player.
Not only one of the best guitar players, but one of the best people in all of Rock n Roll history. Cheers, Mike Campbell.
charcoal frost the most rare color painted by Alfredo at Fender he told Mike Stevens he maybe sprayed 4 of them to his knowledge so yea very rare..
This says everything - I was crying already when Mike said he nearly cried every time he played Handle with Care.
That fingerboard so damn Grimey. Covid-22 on it

1:03 action is really high on that i guess for the slide. I couldn't play it like that though. Beautiful axe
I love Campbell and the Wilburys
Watching that makes me feel like we have the same friends...who I never met in person.
Darn. That story is emotional. Thx Mike
Where do I buy your guitars from I'm looking
Thank you for sharing, Mike!
Wow, cool axe. Never seen Strats of such a colour. 🤔
One of the coolest things I've heard. Yes sir
Strangest hairstyle in Rock
His talking voice is just like Kevin Costner to me.
I want that guitar ..
Mike is one of my all-time favorites
Best pure rock n roll guitarist of all time
Thank you Mike, you just made my day!
Love that green color, 64' every cool.
just a lovely few minutes.
Gotta get a glass slide it’s like butter.
How cool! We all have people we admire!
Mike. The apostle.
Great guitarist, but a little floaty.
So special. Melodic slide. 💘
George: “I’m not that good”
What year was this?
Gr8 guitar story....luv it
Mikey … ya got a lot of heart …
Tom and Mike icons!
Nice axe
Thank you for that.
too dirty fletboard
Thanks for sharing
What a great story!!
Gave me chills.
What a great story
Happy birthday Mike. Yesterday was 72. Same month and year as another favorite. PETER GABRIEL.
Thanks Mike!
George most likely played it in Open E tuning as that was the slide tuning he used. Mikes playing it in Standard tuning which is a bit more of a challenge with slide.
Maybe, but George used Mike's Strat for it, so sounds like he wouldn't have been likely to retune it.
@@lapelcelery42 Good point.
RIP George
What a beautiful story from one of the greatest and most humble musicians ever. Thank you so much Mike!
Wow Mike---thanks so much for sharing that story- just beautiful ....you got me welting up for sure ...LOL :-)
Beautiful
Mike Campbell - his impeccable tones have travelled with me down the river since 1976 and American Girl. What a great artist.
Fine axe
