The Battle Scars of Warsaw 🇵🇱 [Kult America]

  • Perhaps one of the most eerie features of Warsaw Poland, is that its battle scars have gone untouched in many places. In this episode of Kult America, I explored the city to find what WW2 artefacts have remained, and in some cases are overlooked. We saw a bullet ridden wall, a hole in the sky which use to be someones kitchen, a bombed water tower, and bunkers on a train platform. This experience was a lot to take in, its amazing how casually the world goes on in light of such obvious evidence of war.

    Thank you for this insight and this beautiful done documentary.
    Besides the USSR overtaking, here in the Netherlands we have many of these wounded places 2. And many stories from just 1 generation ago, from massive bombing, deportation etc.
    One important thing is that the Netherlands is very thankful for the Polish contribution to Operation Market Garden (witch was falsely blamed by the English General Montgomery for its failing) and the Dutch Liberation!

    We don't hide our battle scars. We wear them with pride. Places like the water tower or the bullet holes in the walls are a reminder of what happened and what should never be allowed to happen again. Those who forget their history are doomed to repeat it. We keep those places to, in a way, keep the memories of previous generations alive and say "never again".
    And as for the "bringing girls to places like this" thing... The concept of good would be meaningless without the concept of evil. Experiencing these spots makes happy moments more intense. Life isn't just joy. It shouldn't be. There's a time for happiness and a time for quiet contemplation. I know of no easier way than bringing them to places like that to remind them of their own mortality, to make them think about how lucky they are to live in a time of peace, and to make them want to appreciate life more.

      I really appreciate your comment. I find it interesting that Poland went to great strides to rebuild but keep what was remaining and fused it. I think other countries just rebuilt something entirely new. Poland really didn't forget, and it makes you think more about it. - I think about this in my own country (USA) and if we had more evidence of the things we did to the Natives or Africans we would have greater respect for our errors of the past. We try to just sweep everything under the rug and then look where we are today!

    Ryan, odwiedź jakiś obóz koncentracyjny np. Aushwitz.. To będzie niezłe wyzwanie emocjonalne dla Ciebie!
    Polecam również wybrać się do Wizny gdzie 360 żołnierzy broniło się przed 42 tys. Niemców którzy byli wspierani przez lotnictwo oraz 350 czołgów. Bronili się 4 dni.

    • @Klebern80
      @Klebern80 6 лет назад

      40:1 to mit Wizny. tylu Niemców by się nawet nie zmieściło w tym miejscu. Bunkry były zaatakowane przez około 1000 żołnierzy Wehrmachtu i były zdobyte bez poważniejszych strat, bo niestety Polacy nie mieli broni przeciwpancernej. Niestety polscy inżynierowie popełnili szereg błędów, zmniejszając efektywność tych umocnień. Nie wykarczowano lasu na wystarczajacej odległości, przez co nawet stanowiska broni maszynowej Niemcy mogli zamaskować w zaroślach. Nie mówiąc już o artylerii. Ale Wizna to nie tylko bunkry dowodzone przez kpt. Raginisa. W oparciu o trudny teren , wąski przesmyk: cały korpus musiał nacierać na odcinku zaledwie kilkunastu kilometrów, wstrzymano niemieckie działania na 2 dni.

      Oh everybody knows it. As an American soldier I was on a tour in a German Cathedral when they started guilt-tripping about the American bombing and then stopped the speech and asked what I was snorting, and rolling my eyes about and trying to hold back a chuckle. I told them that my family had been from Warsaw and only I was born in the USA. They moved on to another topic in the tour after that...
      My grandparents were also forced labor. My grandmother was Jewish but had been living as a fugitive under the protection of my grandfather for a few months before they were arrested and the Germans never figured out who she was.

And of my son’s trip in 2007. Your videos bring me back to my family. The lyric of Polish being spoken brings me back. I can speak some and understand a little more but to hear it is priceless as my mother (second generation) is also gone. It’s good to hear it. Thank you.

    I've never expected how I and my friends and my family and all Polish people are used to landscapes like this. I think, in every Polish town are signs of II World War and places like that ruins of the tower are perfect places for teenagers meetings. You know, first beer, first cigaret. We don't see history in that buildings, we don't treat them on special way. Why? Becouse they are. They are since most of us born and we usually don't see them. We look, but we don't see. And as long as somebody don't tell us that is conected with the war, we won't treat it as we should. And, I'm telling this as a person who passed matura exam in this year and remember my history lessons, if you want your children know history of Poland you make them interested of that and tell them about it, becouse most of teachers don't care about or knowledge and our sensivity. Very good video :)

    you got the right point that we, the poles, are used to war and tragedy. our land and our people saw so many conflicts, destruction and oppression that it became part of our everyday life. and Warsaw was not the only city destroyed in more than 50%.

In The Old Town you can walk on the cobblestone, the same where 70 years ago lay dead people, where were puddles of blood. In some places you can see orginal manhole covers which also hasn't changed. From other episodes I saw that you made it to Ukraine and Subcarpathia - south-east part of Poland - too. I hope you took a chance to see how beautiful city Przemyśl is. Check out WW I Przemyśl Fortress. There is also a mysterious history of San Rideau Fortress in Bolestraszyce and two soldiers that kept living inside blown up complex for years. This places can be literally explored. Fortress Duńkowiczki is well accessible too!

    Warsaw hisory alone can keep you busy for months (I assume you have been to the upraising museum), but there is so much more in Poland. Some places have been gained during border changes, some are genuinlely polish, and about some you can't really tell. When you want to take a break from Warsaw I recommend:
    - The Eagles' nests trail
    - The Riese complex
    - The MRU
    - The castles in Lower Silesia (Chojnik, Bolków, Świny, Grodno, Grodziec, Czocha, Książ, and few others - www.zamkipolskie.com/mapa/dolnyslask/mapa1.html )
    - The Wolfshanze
    - Old City in Kraków
    - Aushwitz (this will be a tough one if even an old water tower moved you).
    P.S. In most of those plces you'll need a good flash light much more than an umbrella ;)

      Does it also suck that German "soil" like Breslau, Stettin and Oppeln are in today's Poland? Because of the shift to the West we gained well-developed land in place of "Wild Steppes". Moreover, we do not have minorities within our borders. And countries that are not ethnically uniform have problems resulting from that, sooner or later. At least we do not have this problem.

    Wow! I actually live in Warsaw my whole life and even I, a citizen of Poland didn't noticed things like that. Esoecially that water tower. And my school used to be in a building with bullet holes, in middle of old Warsaw Getto. This school really shows how modern city is using old buildings. If you wonder it is at Twarda 8/12 at center, near Palace of Culture. Great job showing Poland to forgeins.

Tanie i skuteczne. Ich nazwa pochodzi od Tobruku gdzie pierwszy raz zostały zastosowane na szeroką skalę i zdały egzamin celująco.

    That grafitti was considered so important to maintaining the morale of the people living in occupied Warsaw that an entire organization sprung up that dealt exclusively with "small sabotage",such as painting grafitti, hanging up propaganda posters, vandalizing German signs, breaking windows in homes of volksdeutsche, etc.
    It was a structured and organized effort, not just spontaneous expressions of defiance.
    They'd also defy the Nazis on dates of Polish national holidays, such as the 3rd of May, and clandestinely decorate the city with Polish flags. That was an incredibly dangerous job because of the curfew.

    Powiedziałeś, że jesteśmy przyzwyczajeni do historii kojarzącej się z nieustanną przemocą. Nie wiem, w jakim stopniu do jest prawda, jednak należę do ZHP, odkąd sięgam pamięcią. Często wchodzimy w takie miejsca - piękne niegdyś dworki, z których została teraz tylko piwnica i komin, to, co zostało po fabryce wskaźników, która upadła razem z PRLem, można by długo wymieniać. Nie wiem, jak w innych krajach, ale polska młodzież uwielbia wchodzić do różnej maści i koloru ruin, z kolegami, na randki... Nikt, będąc w restauracji nie zwraca uwagi na ruiny za oknem - przykład - restauracja Belpasso w Falenicy, z której okna widać wyżej wspomniane ruiny fabryki (niestety nie mogę przesłać linka, ale świetnie da się znaleźć w google)

    I wonder, why did you so meticulously censored naming the Germans for what they did ? Even if Bartek told you "The Germans built such bunkers all over Europe", you translated it to "Nazis". Not Nazi, but German. The German army acting on behalf of the German Reich.

    • @jokerhut3914
      @jokerhut3914 8 лет назад +1

      Because not all Germans were bad, mostly Nazis. It was more common for a Wehrmacht soldier to help a Pole than an SS officer, and the SS were straight up Nazis

    • @kpharck
      @kpharck 8 лет назад +1

      This is still not a reason to falsify the translation.

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX 8 лет назад

      It was actually the other way around. Poles would help regular German military deserters escape through various smuggling routes to neutral areas, or just remote areas. SS Deserters, if identified as such, were often as not just murdered by one side or the other. Part of the reason SS officers had their men conduct very public atrocities was to make the local population hate them enough that SS personnel were not going to be given any leniency or assistance if they were attempting to desert. Such knowledge as you do not have the majority of Polish youth, but from what I can see many young people opens his eyes It's sad , but unfortunately true. Anyway you'd do some material about the genocide Volyn , I want people abroad to know what they did to Ukrainians on the Poles during the Second World War , indeed , many Poles do not like how people say that Ukrainians are their brothers .

    Ja jako dziecko obserwujac moje otocznie, miasto Wroclaw na poczatku lat 80tych mozna bylo miec wrazenie, ze wojna zakonczyla sie jakies 10 lat wczesniej. Wiele kanienic mialo uciekte boki po sasiedniej zburzonej kanienicy i moza bylo zobaczyc jak przed wojna Niemcy mieli pomalowane pokoje czy lazienki oraz te XIX wieczne bogate zdobienia... Dawne bogactwo i codziennosc ktore pozostalo tylko wspomieniem po koszmarze wojny. Tego sie nie zapomni do smierci.

    What, you didnt go to old battlefields or rock quarries as a teen to make out or get it on? I'm talking here in the USA, cause we sure did. And the south for many many many years bore the scars of the civil war, some parts still do.
    You need to not be sad or shocked or abhorred at these sights, you should feel your chest swelling with pride and admiration for the people of nazi-era Warsaw. They were tough people who took the fight to the germans when no one else would. They would rather die than submit. That's something to be proud of.

    Back in the 60s and 70s when Iraq was safe and Iraqis mostly rich, Poland was one of the favorite travel destinations to spend holidays in, if not the most favorite, old generation Iraqis speak nothing but warm and kind words about Poles and their kindness and hospitality! Now look at the comments, just one Iraqi guy and the amount of hate is unbelievable! Makes you wonder if Polish people were only acting nice because we had money back then or communist Poland was just a nicer country with kinder people than this Poland! The irony is, this guy has escaped from the same people you nationalistic Christians hate so much, he mentioned al-qaeda, but you go ahead and put all "muslims" in the same basket, especially this guy, who married a heathen Polish girl and is assimilating to the society, he must be a "practicing" muslim for sure!

    Dude, you seemed really puzzled about how violent the history of Warsaw is, and you mentioned you couldn't imagine how cruel one has to be to do such a horrible things, but you as an American should bear in mind the cruelty of your country. Two words are enough here: Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Hundreds of thousands innocent citizens, who didn't expect anything got burnt not even to ashes, not to mention another thousands of survivors who suffered from radiation sickness and other diseases. I'm gonna drop a quote here: "Ain't war hell?"

    I don't get the "Powstanie Warszawskie" idea. It was a suicide with no chance to win. That was only attempt to make Germans aggresive. Then Warsaw was destroyed. If there was no uprising, Warsaw would not be destroyed as much as it was.

      Moja babcia, która przeżyła wojnę mówiła "hitlerowców" :) I dlatego może ja nigdy nie miałam "focha" do Niemców jako takich :) Jasne, że w większości to byli Niemcy, ale w każdym kraju jest jakaś odmiana nacjonałów. Po co podkręcać te przygraniczne narodowe spory, gdy się jest w Unii - myślę, że gdzie dwu się bije tam trzeci korzysta :) Nazistowskie, hitlerowskie czy niemieckie (np obozy), wszystko to dla mnie jest słuszną nazwą, ale na szczęście historyczną.
